Summer Science | National Geographic

00:00:10like all seasons summer is the result of

00:00:13an astronomical fact of life

00:00:16the earth is tilted on its axis 23 and a

00:00:19half degrees as the planet moves in its

00:00:23yearly orbit that angle comes as the

00:00:25position of the northern hemisphere to

00:00:27change relative to the Sun in the winter

00:00:30it’s tilted away from the Sun in the

00:00:35summer it angles towards the center

00:00:37because of the planets tilt during the

00:00:40summer sunlight hits the earth at a more

00:00:42direct angle so the warming effect of

00:00:45the sunlight is more intense plus the

00:00:50Sun is at its highest point in the sky

00:00:51so there are more hours of sunlight to

00:00:54provide heat the opposite is true for

00:00:57the southern hemisphere where the

00:00:59seasons are reversed when we’re angled

00:01:01toward the Sun they’re angled away so

00:01:05while our Australian friends chill out

00:01:07in winter we’re headed for the beach

00:01:18there is some amazing science behind how

00:01:20that golden strip of sand is created

00:01:25the sand on most beaches begins not in

00:01:28the ocean but inland over time

00:01:32weathering by ice wind and rain breaks

00:01:35down rock into sediment creeks and

00:01:39rivers wash the sediment downstream

00:01:43once in the ocean currents of water

00:01:45called longshore currents that flow

00:01:47parallel to the coast carry those

00:01:49sentiments along the shoreline waves

00:01:52then push the sand onto Shore forming

00:01:55beaches longshore currents can deliver

00:02:00up to a million cubic yards of sediment

00:02:02to a single Beach each year

00:02:07most waves that deliver sand to our

00:02:09beaches are born thousands of miles away

00:02:15ocean waves are created basically by the

00:02:17wind the wind blows across the surface

00:02:19of the water and it agitates the surface

00:02:22of the water causing a wave to be formed

00:02:24the longer the wind blows or the

00:02:26stronger the wind blows the bigger the

00:02:28wave that’s going to create waves are

00:02:33generated by wind blown across the

00:02:35surface of the ocean energy from the

00:02:39wind is transferred to the wave through

00:02:41friction between the air and water wind

00:02:46that blows faster longer and further

00:02:48will transfer more energy into the ocean

00:02:51and create bigger waves waves sometimes

00:02:55travel across vast expanses of open

00:02:57ocean in some cases as far as 10,000

00:03:01miles waves can travel across entire

00:03:04ocean basins so a very strong storm in

00:03:08the southwest Pacific will create a

00:03:10swell which could go all the way across

00:03:11the Pacific Ocean and end up impacting

00:03:13Mexico or the west coast of North
