O impacto da iluminação na sua qualidade de vida | Cristhian Nascimento | TEDxRioVermelho

Hi people, good afternoon.

Do you remember that lamp?

That incandescent lamp that was in our house for a long, long time?

Do you remember her color?

This yellow color?

Well, that lamp was replaced by the fluorescent lamp

because it consumes too much energy to generate light.

From 90 to 95% of what it consumes energy is to generate heat and not light.

Just imagine!

I even think she’s actually a source of heat

which, by chance, also generates light.

But it is obvious that at the time it was created,

it has transformed the way people live,

especially at night.

But the fact is: it has been replaced by the fluorescent lamp.

What was her color? Do you remember?

Oops! I imagine many of you should have thought of the color white,

which is plausible because, when that lamp came on the market,

it came predominantly in white,

and this created a collective consciousness

that to save energy, you need to change the color of light,

What is not true.

And what sets aside a fundamental question

which is the impact that illumination causes in our lives,

in our body, which was prepared for natural light, that sunshine

that when you look at it like that at noon, it looks pretty white.

Why is she white?

Because it has in it the red light, the yellow light, the green light, the violet light,

the blue light

Has anyone heard of the blue light?

This is a fundamental light for us.

Although we do not perceive it with our eyes

it impacts our body

and causes it to stimulate the production of a hormone called cortisol.

This hormone stimulates us to activity.

It is critical to the balance of our biological clock.

What we technically call the circadian cycle,

which makes us wake up and wake up in the morning,

and we tend to rest in the night.

But the point is that this blue light is not only in natural light.

She is also in electronic equipment,

as in some lamps,

as in the screen of our computer, as in the screen of our cell phone.

And that is why it is not recommended to use the phone in bed before bed.

Did you know that?

Because while your body is wanting to relax,

to have a quality sleep,

the cell phone is sending a message to him

saying: “Produce cortisol, produce the hormone for activity!”

And this prevents you from reaching a deep sleep

which is critical to restoring your energy.

Who never slept eight, nine o’clock and still woke up tired?

This in the medium and long term leads us to a chronic fatigue.

It brings us closer to the chance of having depression.

As Augustus Cury calls the “evil of the century,”

increases our chance of having anxiety attacks.

Understanding the impact that light causes in our lives,

let’s think on the psychological side:

how is our work environment illuminated, for example?

Usually it is like this: a white, homogeneous light.

It is a propitious light to stimulate our concentration, our productivity.

Cool!

For this, we have a behavior that is more impersonal,

more rational, cooler, often imperative to give an order.

And unconsciously we link this atmosphere

to the need for such behavior.

And this becomes extremely dangerous when one picks up this illumination

and refers back to our house.

You can have a well-treated, beautiful space,

but when we get home the first information we get

it’s not a good day, good afternoon, good night.

It’s: “In what environment am I?”

So when we get home and have this atmosphere,

we tend to maintain that impersonal behavior,

which increases the chance of impatience in our relationships

with our wife, with our children.

Imagine you get home,

with this environment,

and it is illuminated that way.

Immediately you get a message that says, “It’s a family environment,

it is an atmosphere of affection, of love, where I can disarm myself. “

Bring it to your room.

Imagine you arrive in your room and watch your husband, his wife

in such an illuminated setting.

Realize how tasty and even romantic it is

if they are in an environment like this.

And not only when we are with someone, but even if you are alone,

in a moment like the bath that is objective, to wash.

Instead of simply illuminating in an objective way,

like this,

we can light up in a more pleasant way, like this one,

and make the bath also a moment of visual rest,

of rest of mind, of reflection perhaps.

And if the light strikes at home that way,

Imagine, for example, in a psychologist’s office.

Usually the environments are illuminated like this:

a general, central light.

In such an environment, any patient, any person

if observed, analyzed,

and that’s terrible for a treatment like that.

Note that with a simple, cheap lamp placed in the corner of the chair,

you can have an environment like this,

much more conducive for the person to open up.

Much friendlier.

This is quality of life for both the professional and the patient,

because the treatment advances, it accelerates.

And to arouse your curiosity, do you remember that lamp?

Incidentally, before that I want to do an experiment.

Observe this environment, which is illuminated in this way.

It is fitting for you to pay attention to the message being spoken here.

Imagine if this environment was illuminated like this.

Several people settled into the chair.

You can go back.

It is so that you become more comfortable and pay attention to this message,

which is supposed to be important.

It’s a curiousity.

Imagine this lamp, which is cute and we buy in trades around.

It has a way of putting, within the architecture,

like a starry sky.

And there was a situation where the mother needed to change her daughter’s diaper

a year and a half and she would cry, she could not afford it.

When they entered such an environment, the child was like this.

At this time the mother was able to place the child on the bed

and change the diaper easily.

This has brought quality of life for both mother and child.

It made that moment less traumatic.

Who has a small child here knows how difficult it is to change a diaper.

Now, as much as we do not use such creative technology

we have information that can make us decide for the best lamp.

When you look at a catalog it may be written like this:

color temperature.

It may be textually written as “hot” or “cold”

or numerically as 3,000K or 6,500K.

With this information we can decide,

if you arrive at a store and get a package, it will be written there:

“Cold light” is the white light.

Or, it can be numerically: 6, 5 thousand K.

With this information we see that this decision is not specialist talk.

The expert does not know what else we like.

We can choose between a warmer light, or a colder light,

understanding that the lighting is not here just to illuminate,

but it, in fact, transforms our experiences.

Thank you.

(Applause)
