In 2013, I decided to face my opponent.
I was 27 years old and a small documentary producer.
Proud feminists.
At that time, I had great determination to expose
The dark side of the men’s rights movement (MRM).
At that time, my understanding of the men’s rights movement
Completely from online information,
About a very radical anti-women’s equality organization that discriminates against women.
Of course, I did a lot of work before
Women’s issues are related.
I directed a number of documentaries on topics including reproductive rights,
Single mother,
And STEM professionals increasingly need women.
When I realized that no one has yet to exercise male power
When recorded in movies,
I think that by exposing those forces that hinder women’s equality
For me who continue to fight for this, it is a good opportunity.
So, in one year, I visited North America.
Meet leaders and followers of the men’s rights movement.
I interviewed every man power player everywhere.
From two hours to eight hours
Men’s rights movement is (MRA),
And 44 people interviewed were filmed.
In documentary filmmaking, there is a very important rule.
As an interviewer, you cannot interrupt the interviewee during the interview.
So I ask questions and get their complete life story.
At that time, I did not realize this.
But now I look back and see that I understand
Although I was doing an interview at the time, I did not really listen.
I hear them talking
I also know that the camera is recording
But at those moments, I was sitting opposite my opponent.
I did not listen carefully.
What am I doing?
I am looking forward to it.
I’m waiting for that sentence,
Or even if it’s just a few consecutive words,
Can prove my point of view:
That is their opposition and disgust towards women.
The origin of war between women and women.
On several occasions, I think I have found those points.
One of the male activists
say to me,
“Just go out and just take a look.
All the things you look at are built by men. ”
Oh!
This is simply too anti-female.
I feel chin tightened.
But I just sit there quietly, like a professional documentary producer should do,
At the same time bite the upper and lower teeth angry.
(laugh)
After shooting footage throughout the year,
I began to review the original 100-hour movie collection.
Repeatedly play and record
These made me believe that I said
Listening to what you say the most is those who record what you say.
Please remember this sentence.
(laugh)
So,
I started word by word, meticulously uttering those words.
It was during this process that I began to realize
My initial subconscious reaction to certain claims
In fact, there is no legitimate reason.
The feeling of being invaded also failed to pass the test.
It’s those men who have been built
Are the opinions of high-rise buildings and bridges against women?
I think, let us look at the alternative gender. What will happen?
Perhaps feminists would say:
look around,
All you see are born for women.
Wow!
This is a powerful counterattack.
And it’s true.
Is there any suspicion of discrimination against men?
I do not think so.
This is only to recognize our unique and valuable contribution to society.
Fortunately,
When I made the movie “Red Pill,”
I recorded the diary in the form of a video, which ultimately traced my mental path.
When I look back at the 37 videos recorded in that year,
There is a common theme.
I often hear that the male rights activist mentioned
A reasonable and legitimate concept:
But in my head,
I will add gender discrimination or opposition to women’s prejudice in their views.
I think this is what they want to say, but they don’t say what they think.
Here are two examples to illustrate.
A male activist, MRA, would say,
“In the United States, there are more than 2,000 domestic violence shelters.
It is open to women.
But for men, there is only one.
In fact, many famous studies have shown that men are also likely to be abused. ”
I prefer to hear them say
“Women don’t need as many shelters as 2000.
They made up the abused situation.
This is exactly a conspiracy. ”
But review all the original video,
Male rights activists talk about shelters,
Talk about the blogs they have recorded,
As well as their live video on YouTube.
They did not attempt to cancel funding for women’s shelters.
Not at all.
They just say that men also get abused.
They should also be cared and sympathetic.
Let me say another example.
Male rights activists may say,
“When men are falsely accused of raping a woman, where is justice?
It is because of this accusation that
He lost college scholarships.
And was tagged with the ‘rapist’ this inescapable label. ”
I prefer to hear them say
“For women, being raped is not a big deal at all.”
It’s as if I didn’t hear the word “rape” rape at all.
What I heard was, “He was accused of rape.”
Of course, rape is really serious.
And all the male activists I met thought that
For anyone, this is a terrible thing.
I finally understood what they wanted to say.
They tried to bring gender equality into the dialogue.
Who is it for?
A kind, respectable man stands up.
He lost his scholarship, work or worse, his children,
Because he was accused of doing nothing at all.
(sigh)
Yes, I can’t always deny their opinion.
These are real questions.
But in the process of trying to refuse to completely agree with my opponent,
I was judged by the instinctual subjective
Turning to recognition of these issues, but insisting that this is a problem for women.
So here are two more examples.
Male rights activists may say,
“Males are more likely to lose power in custody.”
I will oppose this point:
“Because women have always been unfairly considered guardians and caregivers.
It is because of gender discrimination that women are more often given custody. ”
Yes.
(laugh)
I am not proud of this.
(laugh)
Let me say another example.
Male rights activists may say,
“About 78% of all suicide cases in the world are men.”
Instead, I think:
“But women are more often trying to commit suicide.”
See it (I won again)!
(laugh)
Is that right?
This is not a game.
But I have been trying to turn it into a game.
Why can’t I care about some male issues?
To care for those male victims,
Instead of rushing to identify women as the real victims whenever they have the opportunity.
Of course, after years of what the male power activist once told me
After research and verification,
It cannot be denied that there are indeed many human rights issues
Influencing males disproportionately or individually.
Parental fraud only affects men.
United States compulsory military service agencies,
Still only affects men.
Males have a significantly higher death rate at work than women.
The death rate in war is overwhelmingly high for men.
Suicide, the proportion of men is very high.
Differences in sentencing, average life span,
Child custody, child support,
Accusation of rape, criminal court bias,
Disgusted with men, failed to launch,
Boys are behind in learning,
Homelessness, veterans,
Male baby genital mutilation,
Once pregnant, men have no choice
For male victims of domestic violence, they lack social resources.
So many questions are very disappointing.
If you are a victim,
Or someone you love faces any of these problems, and he is the victim.
These are the problems that men will encounter.
Most people cannot even lift one example.
Because they think that
“Males have the right they deserve, and they have all the power and privileges.”
However, these issues should still be recognized.
Men should be concerned and concerned
And find the solution to the power.
I’ve been a feminist for 10 years before shooting the film “Red Pill.”
I think I have been able to handle the issue of equality between men and women.
But until I met these male activists,
I finally started to consider the equation of equality between men and women
the other side.
This does not mean that I agree with all of them.
But I feel the great value of listening,
And began to try to see the world from their perspective.
I think if I can let my audience listen to their hearts,
It’s like a step up
Make us equal to men and women
Have a higher level of understanding.
So starting from October 2016,
The movie starts to show,
I also started to receive reviews of related articles and critics.
At that time, I felt that in gender politics-related group thinking,
What kind of role can the media play?
I also learned a difficult lesson.
When you start to think that your opponent is very human,
In turn, your group will think you have lost humanity.
This happened to me.
Compared to the value of the questions raised in the film,
I became the object of this smear campaign.
People who have never seen this movie are protesting in front of the cinema.
Repeatedly shouting, this film has caused damage to women.
However, this is not a fact.
But I understand their mentality.
If I never made this movie,
I heard that documentaries about male rightsists are being released.
In the movie, these athletes are not demonized.
I will also protest the screening.
Or at least by signing the petition, boycotting the film,
Because I was told they were my enemies.
I was told that the male rights activists oppose women’s equality.
But all the male activists I met supported the rights of women.
And just asked this question:
“Why is our society not concerned about the rights of men?”
Of course, the biggest challenge I encountered during this process
It is not an opposition to the film.
It’s not how I’m treated by those mainstream media.
Even if it is sometimes offensive.
I met the biggest challenge
It is my detailed analysis of my own prejudices.
As a result, I found out that I really do chess when I make movies.
Self makes me think I’m right
Male rights activists are second-class citizens.
Now everyone knows, I no longer call myself a feminist.
But I must clarify, I don’t have anti-feminism,
And I’m not a male power activist.
I still support women’s rights,
And I also start to pay attention to the rights of men now.
but,
I believe if we want to talk about gender equality in good faith,
We need to hear the voices of different people.
It has not happened yet.
Male groups continue to be injured.
Wrongly thought of as an hate group,
At the same time their voice was completely eliminated.
Do you think that one of the organizations can solve all the problems?
Not at all.
The male actor is not innocent.
Feminists are not.
But if one of the groups is silenced,
This has become a problem for all of us.
If I can make suggestions for everyone,
I want to say that we have to stop “expecting” to be offended,
We must listen honestly, candidly, and earnestly.
This will guide our understanding
Myself and others,
Compassionate with others,
Because together,
We should look for answers together.
Once done like that, we will eventually heal from the inside out.
But all this must begin with listening.
Thank you for listening.
(applaud)
(cheer)
