Confusing English Verbs | GO & COME

Hello! I am Emma from England

If you put these actions in front of you, you will probably tell me

It is simple

They are simple deeds! You know her, right

These are simple actions

But they are somewhat similar to each other

It may be difficult to determine which ones will be used

So in this lesson, we’ll take a closer look

In the differences between them

So you feel more confident when you use them

Am I going?

Or am I?

Both of these actions describe the movement between

Speaker and someone else

Or something else.

But the difference is the direction of movement.

When used Come,

Movement from elsewhere

To where the speaker is located.

And I say another place

It could be the other side of the world

It could be the other side of the room

Did not matter !

What is important is the direction of movement.

From somewhere, to the speaker.

So in this case, it’s me.

If from somewhere, to the speaker.

Are you coming home to dinner tonight?

Are you coming to Melbourne next month?

Tell me when I’m coming to Australia?

Go is usually used when the direction of motion is in

opposite direction .

Where the speaker is located

To another place.

Are you going to Thailand on holiday

If here, the speaker speaks from somewhere else

Not in Thailand

They are not in Thailand at the time of speech

Are you going to party Ben on Friday?

So this will be where you are currently

Or where you usually stay, to Ben’s party

Now if I were at Ben’s party and called you

It is possible to tell

Did you come to Ben concert?

So I would ask if you would move

From where you are to Ben

So I used AT

So far very good, right?

Now you can talk about someone else

This person is not the speaker

Or listener

You are talking about other people

Or something else

Here things may be a bit confusing

Because you might use either come or go

See this example

My mother came to help me

If this is simple

Because I am part of the activity

I came to

But here, my mother went to help my brother

My mother came to help my brother

Now both of these sentences are valid

It is possible to use either an act that comes or goes

But it depends on the point of view

Who is the person associated with this event?

Do I give a description or give information about?

The verb used goes when you take a view

The person who is doing the event

My mother went to help my brother

Amy does the deed

And use an act to come

When you take the recipient’s point of view

The person receiving the event

My mother came to help my brother

If my brother receives help

So we used the Yate verb

Now these two actions will become clearer

With a door

Come to and go to both ways to guide someone

To enter a room or building

But there is a difference

Now we are both outside

If I can tell you, let’s get in

To get out of where we are

For another place or inside

Or when I am inside and you are out

I can tell you enter

Move from where you are, where you are, towards me

Go home

Well, change the context

Are you going to a Sarah wedding?

So this indicates

The speaker will also be present at the ceremony

Are you going to a Sarah wedding?

Now this indicates that speaker

Probably not there

Or maybe they have not decided yet

Are you going to visit your sister?

So this talk is in a place far from the place of the listener

Present

Are you coming to visit your sister?

Here we are talking more specifically

Listener is in a different place

But will move to his sister’s place

The spokesman is also likely to move

I think you understand it

Some differences are really important

To take into account the two acts go and come

I thought they were so simple

But you’ve probably learned

Some of the things about their uses
