00:00:09hi I’m Evan Carmichael and welcome to
00:00:12another edition of ask Evan in today’s
00:00:14video I’m Boyd answer question from 10
00:00:16readers Robbie who was a recent graduate
00:00:18with an engineering degree he won’t
00:00:20start his own business but his parents
00:00:22want him to get a stable government job
00:00:23and asking for my advice on what to do
00:00:26next so Raffy first of all you know
00:00:28parents are always trying to build for
00:00:30our best interests and they might be a
00:00:31little more conservative than us but
00:00:33trying to be too combative with them
00:00:35it’s not going to have the situation but
00:00:37in terms of some advice for you the
00:00:39first thing I would do for inspiration
00:00:41is look up to Michael Dell look up his
00:00:43story when he was 19 years old who was
00:00:45in University he started his business
00:00:46and it started to do well and he wanted
00:00:49to drop out to do his business full-time
00:00:50and his parents but it was crazy and
00:00:52said you have to go back to school and
00:00:53they fought a lot so you made a deal
00:00:56with them where he said next summer from
00:00:58may to august i’m going to spend full
00:01:01time on my business and it does really
00:01:03well i’m going to continue my business
00:01:04and if it doesn’t do well i’ll go back
00:01:06to school he agreed they agreed and he
00:01:10never went back to school because of
00:01:11business took off so that’s kind of one
00:01:13way to get around any issues with your
00:01:15parents both started no business on my
00:01:17own story when I graduated University I
00:01:19had some job opportunities with
00:01:21consulting companies and banks and I
00:01:23thought you know I really want to get my
00:01:25business off the ground and I had I was
00:01:27running the business already and I
00:01:29thought you know some of my friends are
00:01:30taking a year off and they’re traveling
00:01:32and discovering themselves and I thought
00:01:34I’m gonna take a year off and focus on
00:01:35my business let’s see if I can make it a
00:01:37really big success because if it doesn’t
00:01:40work out also how those opportunities
00:01:41that’s a great advantage when you’re
00:01:43young nothing’s really going to happen
00:01:45in that year you can still go back and
00:01:46still get those government jobs and
00:01:48you’ll have gained a little bit of
00:01:49experience for yourself if your business
00:01:51doesn’t take off if it does take off
00:01:53then you’re ready to succeed as an
00:01:55entrepreneur it’s a lot harder when
00:01:58you’re older to be able to do those same
00:02:00things when you have more
00:02:01responsibilities and a family to look
00:02:03after it’s a lot harder to then go
00:02:05start your own business from scratch
00:02:06it’s a lot better to do when you’re done
00:02:08if you can’t so if you’re talking to
00:02:10your parents one thing you might want to
00:02:12do is do the Michael Dell approach and
00:02:13say the next year I want to focus on my
00:02:16business and if it doesn’t work out then
00:02:18I’m going to go back and get that
00:02:19government job and that’s a little bit
00:02:21easier for them to understand then I’m
00:02:23not going to do what I’m just going to
00:02:24start my own company so this some kind
00:02:26of timeline in there it makes a little
00:02:28bit easier and if they see that your
00:02:29company does take off that it’s a lot
00:02:31easier for that to the swallow want to
00:02:33see you succeed and the side of that is
00:02:35you got to work really hard in the next
00:02:37year to make sure your company does take
00:02:38offs and you don’t end up having to go
00:02:40get that government job so I hope that
00:02:42helps brought me if you guys liked the
