00:00:00hi I’m Emma Carmichael and welcome to a
00:00:02video edition of ask Evan today I’m
00:00:05going to answer a question from one of
00:00:06my readers max Max’s question is hey
00:00:13Evan I was taking a look at the tools
00:00:15you use and was wondering what program
00:00:17you use to create your homepage that
00:00:18you’ll owe for the internet you show a
00:00:20pic but don’t tell how you did it if it
00:00:22requires programming
00:00:23I might need my programming to do it for
00:00:25me but if I could do it myself that
00:00:27would be best
00:00:27max so what Max is talking about on my
00:00:30website I have a list of my favorite
00:00:33tools and these are a lot of the tools
00:00:34that I use does help save me time and
00:00:36really help grow my business without
00:00:38having to add a lot of manpower
00:00:40underneath if you scroll down you’ll see
00:00:42a lot of different tools that I like to
00:00:43use and under this section here running
00:00:45your business
00:00:46I recommend save time by creating the
00:00:49home page dashboard I’ve also included a
00:00:51full picture so you can kind of see a
00:00:53little bit better on my Facebook page
00:00:55and this shows you all the different
00:00:57tools that I use on a regular basis and
00:00:59it saves time by having it all in one
00:01:01spot so that I can have access to
00:01:03everything quickly as I click through on
00:01:05my website these are the most popular
00:01:06websites that I use on a day-to-day
00:01:08basis to run my business some of them
00:01:10you can see are personal
00:01:11some of the my key suppliers business
00:01:14and then the social media stuff that I’m
00:01:16involved with as well so what I’m going
00:01:18to do is show you if I load a new tab go
00:01:22to home this is what’s going to load
00:01:23every time I load up a new browser I’m
00:01:25going to show you two quick ways to do
00:01:27it
00:01:27one is how I actually do it and then
00:01:29also show you an easier method if you’re
00:01:31not as technically savvy here we go
00:01:46okay so the first method I’m going to
00:01:48show you is what I actually use to
00:01:50create my homepage dashboard I use a
00:01:52program called Dreamweaver and it’s a
00:01:55pretty common program that you can use
00:01:57to make really advanced websites but
00:01:59it’s also great for beginners as well so
00:02:00this is what it looks like I’ll click on
00:02:03my homepage and editing in is almost
00:02:06like adding a word document if you know
00:02:08how to do word you can get start with
00:02:09Dreamweaver so say I want to add
00:02:11something to my homepage and maybe under
00:02:13personal I will add in Toronto dance
00:02:16salsa which is where I do a lot of salsa
00:02:19dancing I can either add a text link
00:02:21like this I’ve done that a couple times
00:02:22here or I’ll do that if I’m feeling lazy
00:02:25or I could try to go out and find a
00:02:27picture that would make sense for that
00:02:29website so say for this one I want to
00:02:32find the logo for Toronto dance salsa I
00:02:35can go to Google Images comm slash
00:02:38images and I’ll type in Toronto dance
00:02:42salsa and here is a logo so I’ll click
00:02:47on that I will save the picture and I’ll
00:02:53call it
00:02:53Toronto dance salsa Inc
00:02:58there we go I will go back to my
00:03:00dreamweaver I’ll make a new line and
00:03:03then I’ll go insert image and let’s find
00:03:07it trying to dance salsa okay and there
00:03:12it is so I can either make a text link
00:03:14here or the picture link as well now we
00:03:18need to actually go get the link so the
00:03:20link is here’s the website I’ll copy and
00:03:30paste the link go back to my Dreamweaver
00:03:33I’ll highlight the image and where it
00:03:36says link I’ll just copy and paste that
00:03:37in and if I want over the text I’ll also
00:03:41put the link here now for pictures
00:03:44you’ll see that blue borders come around
00:03:46that I tend to find them a little ugly
00:03:48so all I’ll do is click 0 for border and
00:03:51it gets rid of my border I will save it
00:03:55and then if I go back load my web
00:03:58browser if I click home you’ll see that
00:04:01now I’ve added my image and my text link
00:04:03to trying to dance salsa and if I click
00:04:05on it
00:04:06there I am
00:04:19so once you’ve gone through the step of
00:04:21adding all the different pictures and
00:04:23text links that you want in to run your
00:04:25business we have to save the file
00:04:26properly to do that you just go file
00:04:28save as and then you name the file
00:04:32whatever I created a new folder on my
00:04:34computer called home page and then I
00:04:36called it home page you can be more
00:04:37creative if you like but that’s what I
00:04:40did for my own site then you’ll see that
00:04:42as a file that’s run off of my own
00:04:43computer so this isn’t anywhere else on
00:04:46the web for other people to use it’s
00:04:47just stored on my computer and here is
00:04:49the exact route so this will change
00:04:52depending on wherever you want to save
00:04:53it but it’s going to be on your own
00:04:54computer then when I load up my internet
00:04:57browser I’m using Chrome in this example
00:04:59but all the different internet browsers
00:05:01will have an option from here I’m just
00:05:03going to click one of my options and
00:05:06it’ll say home page open this page and
00:05:09you can give it the URL so this is now
00:05:12going to call my new dashboard home page
00:05:14whenever I load up a new browser you can
00:05:17see if I can home there it is
00:05:19so if you’re using Chrome Firefox or
00:05:21Internet Explorer or any of the
00:05:23different browsers they all have an
00:05:24option to set your default home page and
00:05:26you want to make that your local file so
00:05:28you can see here this is the same
00:05:30extension name that I used when I saved
00:05:32it through Dreamweaver
00:05:45okay so I promised you another way to do
00:05:48it if you don’t have Dreamweaver or you
00:05:49don’t want to invest the time into
00:05:51learning it and it’s simple and it’s
00:05:53through notepad so this is really
00:05:55bare-bones you have to know a little bit
00:05:58of HTML but it’s not that complicated so
00:06:00what I’m going to do here just to show
00:06:02you I’m going to create a new file I
00:06:04loaded up my notepad and I’ll call it
00:06:06evans pool resources and if i want to
00:06:10make it bigger I’ll just put a h1 in
00:06:13front of it and I’ll close the h1 tag at
00:06:15the end of it and if I want to link to
00:06:19Toronto dice also as an example it’s
00:06:22important to know that if you’re going
00:06:25to create a link it’s a her F equals the
00:06:27link Toronto dance also dossier then you
00:06:34put in the text that you want to
00:06:36actually show up so try to dance salsa
00:06:38and then close close that off okay so
00:06:44this page is only going to say open
00:06:45school resources with the h1 so will be
00:06:48bigger and then regular font will show
00:06:50the link to the site ok so it’s very
00:06:53bare-bones I can go save as and I’m
00:06:57going to put it in the same folder so
00:06:59home page and I’m going to call it home
00:07:03page 2 and here is important you want to
00:07:06call it dot HTM instead of dot txt which
00:07:09is the default so saver dot HTM okay and
00:07:13it’s been saved now if I go to my
00:07:17internet browser I should be able to
00:07:19click here and put the two at the end of
00:07:21it and here’s my site so I’ve been
00:07:25school resources trying to dance salsa
00:07:27and if I click on it that will not work
00:07:30if I wanted to add the picture in
00:07:33instead of this text here a quick way is
00:07:37go image’ SRC for source equals put it
00:07:42in quotes
00:07:44and close that off and then we have to
00:07:46go find the picture again so if I just
00:07:48quickly load up my google images images
00:07:53fine Toronto and salsa find that logo
00:07:59I’m gonna copy the image URL and as I go
00:08:05back into my notepad I’m gonna paste it
00:08:08in here and now I’m gonna save it again
00:08:11safe then if I go back to here i refresh
00:08:18this page you see it’s a picture and if
00:08:22I load that there is a website so you
00:08:24can keep going on and add more links and
00:08:26more pictures until you’ve made it to
00:08:28your satisfaction and you got a cool
00:08:30list of tools that use on a regular
00:08:31basis to help save you some time if I
00:08:34wanted to then set this page as my
00:08:35default I would copy that link I would
00:08:39go back to my options and then I would
00:08:43here paste the link and that would be it
00:08:49then the next time I load my browser
00:08:51this new page will load instead of the
00:08:53existing one so hopefully this is an
00:08:56easy way for you to be able to create
00:08:58your own home page and if you have any
00:09:01other questions I’d be happy to answer
00:09:03them
00:09:07thank you for joining me for another
00:09:09edition of ask Evan if you liked the
00:09:12video please give it a thumbs up I’d
00:09:14also love to hear your thoughts and
00:09:15feedback below if you want to leave a
00:09:16comment and stay tuned for the next
00:09:18episode
