00:00:08hi I’m Evan Carmichael and welcome to
00:00:11another edition of all in the Masters I
00:00:13believe in the fastest and most
00:00:15effective way to grow a business is to
00:00:17model the strategies of people who have
00:00:18already done what you’re trying to do so
00:00:21today we’re going to look at how a young
00:00:22man who dreamed of becoming a
00:00:24professional racecar driver change his
00:00:27career after meeting the right mentor
00:00:29and rose to the top of his industry this
00:00:32is a story of Star Wars creator George
00:00:34Lucas in the top three lessons that you
00:00:36can learn from his success George Lucas
00:00:40is an American film producer
00:00:41screenwriter director and entrepreneur
00:00:44he’s the founder chairman and chief
00:00:46executive of Lucasfilm and is best known
00:00:48as a creator of the star wars and
00:00:50indiana jones franchises Lucas’s father
00:00:53owned a small office supply store that
00:00:55Lucas was destined to take over but he
00:00:57had other plans he wanted to become a
00:01:00professional racecar driver almost his
00:01:02entire childhood was dedicated to cars
00:01:05when he was in a near-fatal car accident
00:01:07just days before his high school
00:01:09graduation Lucas gave up racing and went
00:01:11to college he enrolled in a university
00:01:14of southern california school of cinema
00:01:16television because he liked photography
00:01:17and thought maybe this will be
00:01:19interesting the program would change his
00:01:21life he met Francis Ford Coppola at the
00:01:24film school who served as his mentor and
00:01:26inspired him become a producer director
00:01:28upon graduation he committed himself to
00:01:31doing films as his profession today
00:01:33Lucas is one of the film industry’s most
00:01:35financially successful director
00:01:36producers is estimated 2011 net worth is
00:01:403.2 billion dollars and he’s received
00:01:43numerous honors such as being named
00:01:44among the 100 greatest Americans by the
00:01:46discovery channel and receiving the
00:01:48Lifetime Achievement Award by the
00:01:50American Film Institute
00:01:52by listening to his mentor and by
00:01:55following his curiosity George Lucas was
00:01:57able to rise to the top of his industry
00:01:59to help your company rise to the top
00:02:02here are three auction items that you
00:02:04can learn from George Lucas action item
00:02:08number one love what you do if you want
00:02:11to find success as an entrepreneur you
00:02:13need to be in business because you truly
00:02:14love what you’re doing you’re not doing
00:02:16it just to make money you’re not doing
00:02:18it because others expect you to do it
00:02:20you do it because you want to do it and
00:02:22you can’t wait to wake up tomorrow
00:02:24morning and do it again you may not be
00:02:26excited about the results you’re seeing
00:02:28with your business so far but you have
00:02:29to be excited about the actual work
00:02:31you’re doing if you hope to become the
00:02:33next George Lucas of your industry Lucas
00:02:36knew he never wanted to take over his
00:02:37father’s office supply store he didn’t
00:02:40even think of itself as a businessman
00:02:41once he discovered his love of making
00:02:43films that’s all he wanted to do just
00:02:46like he had done earlier in his life
00:02:47with race car driving Lucas devoted
00:02:49himself fully to filmmaking even though
00:02:51filmmakers rarely made very much money
00:02:53he wasn’t in it for the money he was in
00:02:56it because he loved it and he ended up
00:02:58making millions in the process according
00:03:01to Lucas my first six years in the
00:03:03business were hopeless there are a lot
00:03:06of times when you sit and you say why am
00:03:08I doing this I’ll never make it it’s
00:03:10just not going to happen I should go out
00:03:13and get a real job and try to survive
00:03:15you have to find something that you love
00:03:17enough to be able to take risks jump
00:03:19over hurdles and break through the brick
00:03:22walls that are going to be placed in
00:03:23front of you otherwise you’ll stop at
00:03:25the first giant hurdle
00:03:28action item number to find something
00:03:31you’re great at to make a mark on your
00:03:33industry you have to be really great at
00:03:35something create a niche where you are
00:03:37the absolute best at what you do and
00:03:39start building a name for yourself as
00:03:41you expand your expertise you can offer
00:03:43more products and services but keep a
00:03:45specialized focus so you can easily
00:03:47separate yourself from everyone else in
00:03:49your industry when Lucas enrolled in
00:03:51film school he thought maybe that’ll be
00:03:53interesting he had no idea that Mickey
00:03:56movies would become his calling all he
00:03:58did was start following his interests in
00:04:00the hope that it would lead him
00:04:01somewhere he enjoyed when he first
00:04:04enrolled he was interested in social
00:04:06sciences anthropology sociology
00:04:07psychology and photography he managed to
00:04:11combine all of them into filmmaking am I
00:04:13tapping into what he was curious about
00:04:14success eventually became his according
00:04:18to Lucas I’m a storyteller but to enable
00:04:20me to tell my stories have had to
00:04:22develop the necessary technology a lot
00:04:25of people like to do certain things but
00:04:27they’re not good at it keep going
00:04:29through the things that you like to do
00:04:30until you find something that you’re
00:04:32actually seem to be good at talent is a
00:04:34combination of something you love a
00:04:36great deal something you can lose
00:04:38yourself in something that you can start
00:04:40at nine in the morning look up from your
00:04:41work and it’s ten o’clock at night and
00:04:43something that you have a natural
00:04:45ability to do very well action item
00:04:49number three keep going entrepreneurship
00:04:52is hard and you’re going to have days
00:04:54when you want to give up keep going if
00:04:57you love what you’re doing and you’re
00:04:58making a significant difference in the
00:05:00lives of your customers you need to find
00:05:02a way to keep going believe that what
00:05:04you’re doing is right and that things
00:05:05will work out the dots will connect in
00:05:08your future even if it doesn’t make
00:05:09complete sense right now trust that
00:05:12you’re on the proper path when Lucas
00:05:14first decided to go to film school he
00:05:16was told he’d never find a job
00:05:18afterwards when he graduated and decided
00:05:20to make a film about androids he was
00:05:23told to come back when he was serious
00:05:24and when his film about androids was
00:05:26made not everyone was singing its
00:05:28praises but Lucas pressed on and soon
00:05:30became one of the wealthiest and most
00:05:32well-known filmmakers in history
00:05:34according to Lucas you simply have to
00:05:37put one foot in front of the other and
00:05:38keep going
00:05:40put blinders on and plow right ahead if
00:05:42you want to be successful in a
00:05:44particular field of endeavor I think
00:05:47perseverance is one of the key qualities
00:05:48the secret is not to give up hope it’s
00:05:52very hard not to because if you’re
00:05:53really doing something worthwhile I
00:05:55think you’ll be pushed to the brink of
00:05:57hopelessness before you come through on
00:05:59the other side you just have to hang in
00:06:01through that so remember love what you
00:06:07do find something you’re great at and
00:06:10keep going to finish up this video I
00:06:13wanted to share one of my favorite true
00:06:15stories about George Lucas and some of
00:06:17his best quotes Lucas wrote the
00:06:20screenplay for Star Wars after being
00:06:22inspired by Flash Gordon and Planet of
00:06:24the Apes while writing it he thought it
00:06:26was too wacky for the general public but
00:06:29he insisted on finishing it when the
00:06:31script was finished only 20th Century
00:06:33Fox is willing to take a chance on the
00:06:35movie in a groundbreaking move at the
00:06:37time Lucas agreed to give up his
00:06:39director salary in exchange for forty
00:06:41percent of the film’s back office take
00:06:43as well as merchandising rights and
00:06:45sequel rights breaking all box office
00:06:48records and when in seven Academy Awards
00:06:50Star Wars made Lucas an instant
00:06:52millionaire as well as a household name
00:06:56you
00:07:23you
00:07:28you
00:07:40thank you for joining me for another
