00:00:08hi I’m Evan Carmichael and welcome to
00:00:11another video usually these videos i
00:00:13talk about famous entrepreneurs and the
00:00:16lessons that you learn from their
00:00:17success today i’m going to take a
00:00:18slightly different approach and i’m
00:00:19going to talk about my ipad i just came
00:00:22back from a vacation and I use my iPad
00:00:24as my main computing device instead of
00:00:26bringing my computer and it saved my
00:00:29vacation I want to talk about all the
00:00:31different ways that I used it and
00:00:32hopefully tell you about a couple apps
00:00:33that you haven’t heard of and how you
00:00:35might be able to use it for your next
00:00:37trip as well so here we go app number
00:00:41one DJ or ipod driving from Toronto to
00:00:44New York is about a nine hour trip
00:00:46depending on delays at the border they
00:00:48can get really born if you don’t have
00:00:50music my wife and I have a tradition of
00:00:52making a new CD full of songs every time
00:00:54we travel unfortunately once we crossing
00:00:57the Buffalo we stopped at a Plaza and I
00:00:59left the car lights on I killed our
00:01:01battery we got a new battery installed
00:01:03but our stereo system has an anti-theft
00:01:05mechanism that if you change the battery
00:01:07the stereo gets disabled unless you have
00:01:09the unlock code we didn’t have an honest
00:01:11which meant no music for the rest of our
00:01:13trip enter DJ or iPod luckily I had
00:01:17loaded my songs onto my ipad as well
00:01:19before we left we had music for the rest
00:01:22of our trip the iPad batteries were
00:01:24awesome and the speaker was pretty good
00:01:26in the car we found the best spot to put
00:01:28the ipad was in the sun visor with a
00:01:29speaker pointing down i bought the DJ
00:01:32app because i’m also a salsa DJ my part
00:01:34time is the best app i know that i’ve
00:01:36seen for mixing songs and hosting
00:01:38parties but the native ipod app would
00:01:40have done the trick just as well and
00:01:41it’s free app number two Evernote
00:01:45Evernote is a cool tool that lets you
00:01:47store notes and pictures online and
00:01:49access them from any device I’ve used it
00:01:52in the past that go paperless and get
00:01:54rid of all my paper receipts after watch
00:01:55the video on youtube I never really use
00:01:58it for anything beyond keeping track of
00:02:00my receipts but this vacation provided a
00:02:02perfect opportunity to test it out
00:02:05before going away I loaded my desktop
00:02:07version of Evernote with information on
00:02:09each city that would be visiting i put
00:02:11in places we should visit information
00:02:12about where we would be docking and a
00:02:14little bit of history about the city it
00:02:16automatically synced with my evernote
00:02:18app on my ipad and whenever we landed in
00:02:20a new city i had all the information at
00:02:22my fingertips the basic app is free but
00:02:25if you want to be able to have the
00:02:26information available offline then you
00:02:29need to upgrade for 499 a month or 4499
00:02:32in a year I know some entrepreneurs who
00:02:34store every idea they have on Evernote
00:02:36and use it as an integral part of their
00:02:38business I’ll definitely be looking at
00:02:40other ways to incorporate it into my
00:02:41daily life after the great experience
00:02:43from this trip app number 3 sleep pillow
00:02:47my son is a little over two years old
00:02:49and is used to sleeping with a sound
00:02:51machine that helps drown out any
00:02:52background noise unfortunately in our
00:02:54haste to leave we forgot his sound
00:02:56machine at home there must be an app for
00:02:59that enter sleep pillow with this app
00:03:02you can choose from a large selection of
00:03:03sounds to help you fall asleep from
00:03:05water falling the chimes to spa music
00:03:07our favorite was the electric fan it
00:03:10were like a charm and when you’re
00:03:12traveling with the two-year-old nothing
00:03:14beats a good night’s sleep
00:03:16app number for male when you’re
00:03:19traveling on a cruise ship connect them
00:03:21to the Internet can cost upwards of a
00:03:23dollar per minute in the past my wife
00:03:25and I would connect using Microsoft
00:03:27Outlook download our emails disconnect
00:03:29respond to the emails reconnect and send
00:03:32so we’re not spending hundreds of
00:03:33dollars on slow cruise ship Wi-Fi this
00:03:36time I took a different approach I
00:03:38connected my email to my iPad and when
00:03:40we landed in a new city would find a
00:03:42local starbucks and connected download
00:03:44my email after dinner back on board the
00:03:46ship I would load up the emails respond
00:03:48and the next day connect again in a new
00:03:50city to send the emails and download new
00:03:52ones it was unbelievably freeing to not
00:03:55have to load my laptop to get my emails
00:03:57and to be able to reply at my leisure up
00:04:01number five Instapaper enzyte usually
00:04:05when I go on vacation I packed a lot of
00:04:07books and magazines as reading material
00:04:08this time my goal was to pack everything
00:04:11I needed for the entire two-week trip in
00:04:13one backpack and carry it with me books
00:04:15and magazines are heavy so they couldn’t
00:04:17come with me enter into the paper
00:04:20instapaper was after the first app I
00:04:22bought when I got my iPad what it allows
00:04:24you to do is clip articles that you read
00:04:26online and save them to read offline
00:04:28later you can install a little button on
00:04:30your browser and whenever you see
00:04:32something that you want to read but
00:04:33don’t have the time yet click the button
00:04:35it’ll save it and you can read it
00:04:37offline on your iPad whenever you want I
00:04:39get a lot of my reading material from
00:04:42the RSS feeds that I subscribe to in
00:04:44google reader and Instapaper has
00:04:46built-in intelligence to work with
00:04:47google reader so it’s a seamless process
00:04:49I also get my news from zeit which is
00:04:52free which has Instapaper integration as
00:04:54part of my daily routine in Toronto I’ll
00:04:57go through my google reader enzyte while
00:04:59I eat breakfast and save anything that’s
00:05:00interesting to instapaper then I’ll read
00:05:03it on my iPad as I walk to and from work
00:05:05before leaving on this trip I loaded up
00:05:08my instant paper with lots of reading
00:05:09material from blogs that I follow and
00:05:11when I connected to send emails I often
00:05:13load about my site to save any
00:05:15interesting articles as well it gave me
00:05:17lots of reading material to go through
00:05:18offline while relaxing on a deck chair
00:05:20on the cruise ship and be carrying
00:05:22around heavy books and magazines with me
00:05:24everywhere
00:05:25app number six interactive ebooks for
00:05:29kids for those of you who travel with
00:05:31kids I would definitely recommend
00:05:32checking out some of the interactive
00:05:34ebooks you can install on your iPad we
00:05:36don’t let our son watch TV yep and we
00:05:38didn’t have space to bring all his books
00:05:40so I downloaded a number of ebooks that
00:05:42he thoroughly enjoyed what we were away
00:05:43they were educational and also a great
00:05:46way to calm him down when he was getting
00:05:47too tired or worked up there are many
00:05:50options out there but you have to sort
00:05:52through them to find the good ones that
00:05:53are age-appropriate my two-year-old sons
00:05:56favorites were the monster at the end of
00:05:58the book Thomas and Friends Mickey
00:06:00spooky night puzzle book and the Lorax
00:06:03for dr. Seuss they’re all teach reading
00:06:06skills and interactive and allow your
00:06:08kids to explore books in a whole new way
00:06:10as well as give their parents some time
00:06:12to relax op number seven maps when
00:06:16traveling in the past I used to get a
00:06:18map of each place we were visiting
00:06:19research all the spots I wanted to visit
00:06:21and mark them on a map the map would
00:06:24usually start to wear down on me with
00:06:25all the folding and unfolding throughout
00:06:27the course of the day if we wanted to
00:06:29find something that I didn’t mark on the
00:06:31map we had to ask the locals and hope
00:06:33they gave us the right directions enter
00:06:35the native Maps app maps is
00:06:37automatically installed on your iPad and
00:06:39save me so many times on this trip it
00:06:42can automatically you are in a city and
00:06:44you can quickly see where you have to go
00:06:46seen it on the big screen was so much
00:06:48more helpful than on the iphone
00:06:50especially when urine in that city as
00:06:52big as New York and you want to cover a
00:06:53lot of territory we used the planner
00:06:56subway routes look up sushi restaurants
00:06:58see how far away we were from our car
00:07:00find our cruise ship and the list went
00:07:02on my favorite use was when I was
00:07:04shopping in a drugstore in New York City
00:07:06and a grandmother with her baby
00:07:08grandchild asked me if there was a
00:07:09walgreens anywhere nearby my Toronto
00:07:11Blue Jays hat didn’t tip her off that I
00:07:13was in a local I pulled up my iPad
00:07:16search Walgreens and maps and showed her
00:07:18that there was one two blocks away and
00:07:19how to get there she was floored and it
00:07:22made her day app number eight GarageBand
00:07:27I purposely removed any games I had on
00:07:29my iPad I tried many of them out for a
00:07:31month and found them to be overly
00:07:33addictive and counterproductive better
00:07:35to delete them completely and not be
00:07:37tempted but I found myself
00:07:39wanting to have some fun of my down time
00:07:41instead of reading enter garage read I
00:07:44started using garageband when YouTube
00:07:46was giving me issues with having
00:07:47background music in my videos even
00:07:49though I had the rights to use the music
00:07:51I’m currently uploading about five
00:07:53videos per week on my youtube channel
00:07:54and each one of them was a battle with
00:07:56YouTube of the music rights so I decided
00:07:59to create my own music and I used
00:08:01garageband into it the music you hear in
00:08:03the background of this video was created
00:08:05by me in garage band so when I found
00:08:08myself wanting to have a little more fun
00:08:10I cranked open garage man and started
00:08:12composing with earphones on so it’s not
00:08:14the disturbed rest of my family it’s a
00:08:17great way to kill boredom but do
00:08:18something that somewhat practical
00:08:20instead of playing games at least that’s
00:08:22what i told myself in conclusion the
00:08:26trip was made so much easier and more
00:08:28enjoyable because of the ipad we had
00:08:30music we could travel lightly we could
00:08:31sleep we knew where we were going and we
00:08:33had a lot more fun being able to travel
00:08:36without having use my computer was so
00:08:38liberating I can’t imagine ever going
00:08:40back and can’t wait for my next trip
00:08:43thank you for joining me for another
00:08:45video if you guys liked it please give
00:08:47it a thumbs up below I’d also love to
00:08:49hear your thoughts and feedback if you
00:08:51want to leave a comment under the video
