00:00:07when experimenting with homemade
00:00:09pyrotechnics things go wrong and you
00:00:11don’t want to be too close if your
00:00:13composition explodes I need some sort of
00:00:16a pyrotechnic time delay so for this
00:00:18project I’m using items from around the
00:00:19house to make a simple form of a
00:00:21slow-burning fuse

00:00:33[Music]
00:00:38if you’ve seen my videos on making
00:00:40rocket fuel and smoke flares you’ll
00:00:42probably recognize these ingredients
00:00:44this time I’m mixing up thirty six grams
00:00:46of my stump remover with 24 grams of
00:00:48white table sugar this gives me a 60
00:00:50gram composition that needs to be shaken
00:00:52up vigorously I have a preheated frying
00:00:55pan set at medium heat so that when I
00:00:56add 1/3 cup of water it boils instantly
00:00:59at this point I’ll slowly sprinkle in
00:01:01the 60 gram mixture because I want this
00:01:03all to dissolve I can stir that in with
00:01:05a spatula and because the water is so
00:01:07hot it dissolves completely that’ll need
00:01:10to sit for a minute to heat up and let
00:01:12the water boil out so it’s a good time
00:01:14to prepare my cord this is 100% cotton
00:01:16yarn and I’m going to be using about 12
00:01:18feet of it okay the water is boiled down
00:01:20to the point where the slurry is getting
00:01:22very frothy which means this solution is
00:01:24supersaturated it’s time to add the yarn
00:01:27into the mix to soak up the chemicals as
00:01:30the last bit of water continues to
00:01:31evaporate out it’s important that every
00:01:33bit of yarn is absorbing an equal amount
00:01:35of the solution holding on to one end
00:01:37will help prevent the yarn from knotting
00:01:39up when I pull it out this gets
00:01:41transferred onto a cookie sheet using a
00:01:43pattern resembling a sine wave and with
00:01:45about six turns on each side the yarn is
00:01:47evenly spaced and fits perfectly now
00:01:49this goes into an oven set to 300
00:01:52degrees for about 20 minutes and while
00:01:54the cord is still hot I can nudge it
00:01:56slightly to prevent it from sticking to
00:01:57the pan when it cools later on alright
00:01:59the time is up and this court has a
00:02:01slightly golden tinge to it and that’s a
00:02:03good sign so I’ll leave it out to cool
00:02:04for about 5 to 10 minutes when the cord
00:02:07is fully cool you can see it’s become
00:02:09stiff and retains the shape from when it
00:02:11was bait now I can just cut these
00:02:13strands at the base of the turns using
00:02:14some scissors and I’ve got a nice piece
00:02:16of fuse cord ready to go the cord is
00:02:19easy to cut and a few of these strands
00:02:21will get cut down smaller to be using a
00:02:22batch of smoke flares I made in another
00:02:24project look for how I built those in a
00:02:27different video
00:02:27okay testing out the fuse the first
00:02:29thing I notice is it lights off really
00:02:31quickly and continues a steady and
00:02:33progressive burn even with a little
00:02:36breeze it’s still got a nice flame
00:02:37shooting off the back and seems to burn
00:02:39steady at about 3 seconds per inch
00:02:41sweet I tried making different fuses
00:02:44this time soaking a coffee filter in the
00:02:46solution and laying it out for baking I
00:02:48also tried soaking some paper towel then
00:02:50twisting pieces of it in the shorter but
00:02:52thicker fuses after they were baked they
00:02:54were very drying and very rigid and cut
00:02:57a strip of the coffee filter first and
00:02:58tested it with a rock on top to see if
00:03:00it would fizzle out when it lost contact
00:03:02with the open air surprisingly it
00:03:04continued to burn on underneath the rock
00:03:06and kept on burning right out the other
00:03:08side one of the paper towel fuses was
00:03:10lit but maybe twisting it wasn’t such a
00:03:12good idea because when the pressure
00:03:14built inside was gone in an instant I
00:03:17tried another one and got pretty much
00:03:19the same result when this one was lit
00:03:21without anything holding it down it went
00:03:24airborne so as far as consistency
00:03:26reliability and aesthetics Co I’m pretty
00:03:29happy with the results using the yarn
00:03:30well there’s how I made some cheap but
00:03:32functional slow-burning fuses with
00:03:34things around the house if you like this
00:03:36project perhaps you’ll like some of my
00:03:38others check them out at the king of
