Man-Eating Croc | National Geographic

00:00:01the country of Malawi lies in southern

00:00:04Africa along the lake that bears its

00:00:06name flowing south the waters of the

00:00:10Shire River are used for fishing farming

00:00:13and often for drinking the river is the

00:00:18source of life for many villagers but

00:00:22also for crocodiles once hunted almost

00:00:26to extinction the Nile crocodile is now

00:00:29a protected species

00:00:31the crocodiles however don’t extend the

00:00:34same courtesy croc attacks are

00:00:38commonplace along the riverbanks some

00:00:41escaped with only a scar others lose a

00:00:44limb many died is a problem caused not

00:00:50only by the Crocs but by villagers as

00:00:52well local farming and fishing remove

00:00:56the crocodiles usual prey leaving them

00:00:58unafraid and hungry

00:01:06Solutions are not easy

00:01:09the villagers tried to exercise extreme

00:01:11caution when working by the river

00:01:16some seek help from traditional medicine

00:01:18man

00:01:22conservationists have used a more modern

00:01:24approach television we have what we call

00:01:35drop dial safety campaigns and we tell

00:01:39people how their clocks behave in water

00:01:41and how they should behave to protect

00:01:44themselves one long-term solution is to

00:01:47build wells

00:01:49a safe water supply would let villagers

00:01:51conduct their daily activities away from

00:01:54the river

00:01:55and away from the crocodiles

00:01:58but Malawi is one of the world’s poorest

00:02:01countries it faces many challenges

00:02:04communities will have to work with

00:02:06conservationists to come up with lasting

00:02:08solutions until then people must depend

00:02:14on the river and travel through the

00:02:18realm of the crocodile
