We’ve reached the world’s energy tipping point | Charlie Hargroves | TEDxAdelaide

We really live in a wonderful world.

A beautiful planet.

I am sure that every one of you has a place in his mind always what I mean,

A place to go with your mind when there are things that work a little or stress you.

It may be walking along the beach at sunset,

Sit on the bank of the river with a cold beer cup while your colleagues do a barbecue

Or walking with your children in the forest.

I have the honor to be one of several people around the world

Devoted his life to ensuring that these places remain wonderful for future generations.

One of the things that threatens these places,

These are our choices about energy sources.

Recently in a conversation with me with some friends,

I realized that I had forgotten something really great.

I missed a big turnaround.

Several months ago, I was at the Rome Energy Club meeting,

Today we discussed new technological means and solutions

With some wonderful people around the world,

Think about how to apply technology, new concepts and new policies

To solve some serious challenges in the world.

Half a day later I held my notebook

I am a little obsessed with taking notes – I wrote this question,

“Have we reached the turning point?”

Put my notebook aside and follow up with a group of work.

Later that night – the best part of some of these trips is dinner

And evening evenings I’m sure most of you know that.

So we went to the restaurant, a little relaxed,

We ate some of the wine and asked,

“What is the idea that you flew?

In your field, which will help maintain the continuity of the world? “

Because when you listen to the media, you hear a lot of lies and blues,

Much fear and doubt about what things are and whether they are real or not.

I have not seen these comrades for six months,

Some of them twelve months ago.

Including Hunter Lovens, Bob Costanza, Herbert Gerdait,

A group of brilliant minds.

“What are the features that users keep?

The energy we have? “

As they shared their stories, all the little ideas began to come together.

Bob, sitting next to me, is one of the best economists in the world

He whispered to me, “It looks like we’ve reached the next turning point”

I said, “I’m patient!”

I picked up my bag and took out my book,

I opened it and showed it the same question I asked today.

What happened at that moment –

Because each of us had the opportunity to share each other what we see and know,

We have been given hope and inspiration –

Sitting with each other is really exciting,

Not to mention when she meets them all.

So I have the honor to share some things

Which were derived from that conversation.

We will start with coal.

Here begins our trip.

In March 2015, the Bank of America released some data

Which was published in the magazine “Australien”,

Pointing out that coal imports to China, for the first time in the history of industry,

Demand has slowed and there are expectations that demand will continue to decline.

Was unprecedented, and two to three years before this date

If this were to happen, it would be ridiculed.

A year later the Energy Research Institute issued data

Which showed that in the United States,

Not only consumption has declined while production has also declined.

Stanley and Burs commented that there were some times of boom and bust

In the economy, but what was happening to coal was a permanent decline.

Shortly thereafter, JP Morgan reclassified coal investment,

As a prohibited transaction and placed on the same list

Such as child labor and overgrowth of trees.

This is what has just happened in the past six months.

This is unbelievable.

This is a big shift in coal.

Part of the reason for this great transformation has occurred in China

Is that when you burn coal Yeah, you produce greenhouse gas emissions.

Which affect the entire planet,

But you also produce a lot of pollution.

People in Beijing die every day almost every hour,

Due to air pollution only of vehicles.

The mayor of Beijing said the city was no longer a healthy place to live

Due to our energy use options.

Because of our use of conventional energy sources,

We still use the same sources of energy as primitive humans.

It is time for change.

Let us change that equation with renewable sources of energy.

This is an energy plant in its beginnings in Victoria.

On April 6, 2016, Bloomberg published figures

Which showed that in the mid-seventies,

To produce one watt of energy from a solar power plant,

It would cost about $ 70.

Do you believe, given these figures,

It now costs one dollar and even less than one dollar.

For energy workers, is this an area you want to invest in,

Something that costs $ 75 per watt to $ 1 per watt?

At the same time, you can see the amount of investments

In that technique it has multiplied strongly.

What is the effect as well?

You can see on the left the expectations.

After Bloomberg published the figures a week, they published the title,

“Fossil fuel has just lost its race against renewable energy.”

This is the beginning of the end.

Yeah!

(Laughter)

So now we see investment and prospects in fossil fuels going down

Investment in clean energy and clean energy legislation is increasing.

Not a single face command is not a stroke of luck.

But a set of legislation and standards.

We do not see a shift only in where investments go,

But we also see a quick move toward withdrawing funds from dirty investments.

Called filtering, this is a new term for me recently,

It means that I will withdraw my money from this field

Because I do not think he will yield the desired yield.

Of course the most interested people

Long-term investment is the people who manage

All our pension funds.

Now in 20 or 30 years

I want to be able to take care of myself and my wife,

Give my children a little help

Getting my son to teach well somewhere away,

Or have a good education here.

Now there is someone who invests my money.

I really want to put them in something that the expectations are talking about lower returns

Compared to something expected to have imaginary gains?

There are more than 500 institutions, as of this year this is really new –

ANU was the first in Australia, the University of Curt followed suit after a period.

There are 500 investment groups will start investing here,

They withdrew $ 3.4 trillion in investments

They were for fossil fuels.

$ 3.4 trillion!

What a huge thing!

Now all cities do this, institutions, municipalities,

They began to abandon fossil fuels with maximum speed

The more he taught me, the more I became stunned

Was about Peabody Energy, the world’s largest coal company

It is considered one of the major industrial castles.

Coal was considered as bread and milk, something you could always sell.

This is their share price.

Fell 97% in the last five years.

Sinking into debt of $ 10 billion,

Finally, in April of 2016, it ceased its activity and declared bankruptcy.

As well as three of the world’s four largest coal companies

Who also declared bankruptcy.

And the latter is still holding a bit and its share price has reached two per cent

From its price five years ago.

However, 50 oil companies around the world filed for bankruptcy.

Lift up your hands if you have heard about this in the news.

I have not heard of this, despite my presence in this area.

Excellent, someone was following.

I’m inside this area. I know him by heart.

That’s what I do every day. And I love to do.

Is my specialty. Unfortunately I made a mistake!

So sit around the table with my friends,

“Did you expect this transformation?” He asked.

“Yes, I expected this, and that.”

All these things are fun but all together,

An unbelievably beautiful story.

So now we see something very enjoyable.

For the first time in our industrial history

We see a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

This is not the result of a major global event.

In the 1970s we saw the oil crisis,

There was a little drop.

We have had few events throughout history where a little decline,

But always recover.

Now we see a low based on a lot of small variables

Rather than shocking events, so it is great.

These figures for March of 2016.

The future looks great,

Some initiatives we see –

People often wonder about China.

China has strict targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions

In the world

65%

Not because of environmental background

But because of the social background no longer tolerate pollution rates.

As I said, technique is out of date

Oh really?

It is no longer economically feasible.

Social and economic aspects of the abandonment of fossil fuels

Known for several decades

Scientists have been writing about this effect since the reign of Irenos

Professor and Nobel laureate in the late 19th century.

Who changed this year is the third pillar,

The third thing to take into account is economic feasibility,

Economic feasibility has already changed.

So China said, “Okay, enough!”

We have done enough

We will build a network around the world,

Which will harness the winds of the North Pole and the Sun in the equator region

To obtain a clean and renewable energy source for about 80% of the world.

How will they be able to provide these funds?

This will cost $ 50 trillion,

Which is equivalent to more than half of the world’s GDP.

But why do they do that?

It’s a business opportunity, it’s an effective way to clean our planet.

It’s the best way to become proud of what we make.

Inspiring people around the world.

These two persons are also part of this project.

What a wonderful thing!

And recently, on October 8, 2016, just two weeks ago

“Well, that’s enough,” said the German government.

By the beginning of 2030, you will not be able to license your fossil fuel vehicle

In Germany .”

So now the license is already in place.

I admit that I drive my beloved Commodore to myself

Which I have owned for 22 years.

(Laughter)

I can not afford the Tesla yet.

All branches of government must meet together and ask

“What is the best way in the interest of our peoples,

To overcome air pollution and water pollution? “

“What is the best thing we can do for the environment for our children”

Now, as of now, “What are the things that fit

Our economy? “

The difference here,

And the most exciting about the future

It will not be based on one kind of technology,

Such as steam engines, electronic chips or electricity,

One thing other than the entire economy.

It will be a mixture of things, things we can all share.

There will be things I’m involved in, things you’ll share,

Families, those different industries and governments with each other.

We will all be part of it,

Create a range of opportunities.

So ladies and gentlemen, this year I am convinced,

I hope I could have persuaded you, or at least brought your attention

We have reached a turning point in energy around the world

I invite you to join me and many millions of people

Who are now working to move on our magnificent blue planet

Towards a secure, clean, sustainable and vibrant future.

So that all our places, my place and place,

Can be protected and nurtured for future generations.

thank you

(clap)

(End of applause)
