The art of chutzpah: what blocks us from creative thinking? | Jonathan Howard | TEDxRiga

Translator: Ayham Al Yaghshi Checker: Riyad Almubarak

Imagine a kindergarten.

A beautiful and nice kindergarten in the middle of nature.

In a bright, bright day.

At the end of the kindergarten there is a forest.

A road leads to the forest.

At the end of the road there is a sign.

There is something written on the sign.

What was written on the sign?

Do not try to think of something genius, innovative or creative.

The first thing you see written in that sign is the correct answer.

This is a kind of diagnostic activity I do in innovative workshops.

You do it with many different groups around the world.

And with different types of professions from different cultures.

There are perfectly compatible patterns that arise in reactions.

Who expected beautiful and positive words on the sign?

“Welcome to Paradise”, something of this.

Their number is small.

Who expected negative words on the sign?

“Warning” “Danger” “Watch out” “Guard dog in service.”

“Private property, no entry.”

Approximately 80 to 90% of people expect something negative written on the sign.

If you expect something negative on the sign,

There is a high probability that someone is somewhere in your life,

I tell you that you are not allowed to enter your own imagination.

It’s a dangerous place. There are monsters inside.

There is nothing good to gain from it.

Very few people expect positive things

They believe they are allowed into their own imagination.

So if you are expecting a negative sign then I recommend you

With the greatest benefit of learning the art of “Khutsba.”

Who knows this word, Gotzba? Who heard of it?

Yeah.

Gotzba is a Hebrew word of origin.

I entered English through Yiddish.

Its mostly a slightly negative implicit concept.

It has no direct translation into English.

There is no exact word to know that word in English.

So people usually resort to their definition using illustrative examples.

To describe what it means.

A traditional example is that person who killed both parents

Then he asked the judge to treat him because he was an orphan.

Another example

An old lady selling sulfur bars on the road, compared to 10 cents a pack.

Every morning, a pleasant young man passes by on his way to work.

And throw in her box 10 cents without taking any packet of sulfur.

He was a wonderful young man who wanted to help her.

He did not want to take pride.

This lasted for five years. Five years of generosity.

One day, five years later, she said to him:

“Young man, you appeal to me.

You are one of my best customers, but I want to tell you something,

The price has risen to 15 cents. “

(Laughter)

So this is rude, right? This is a lack of sensitivity

This is socially unacceptable, greedy and aggressive.

This woman owned what many people in the modern world call Khutzeba.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines Khutzeba as:

“A rude or shocking personal behavior or attitude,

But he is so confident that people are forced to admire him. “

What nonsense. This is a real absurdity.

This is like the definition of the tiger as a vicious monster.

This is true to some extent,

But it is much larger.

So I reject this definition of Khutzeba.

I think it is not fair.

I am here to give Khutzbba a good name, to regain its good name.

The essence of all creative purpose is a good large dose of khotzba.

So I have a completely different definition of Khutzeba.

I begin by defining it by defining its antidotes.

There is an old tribal story about two men in a mental clinic.

Two patients decided to flee the night.

One of them said to the owner: “Okay, here’s the plan.

I’ll go to the sink to steal some clothes and blankets,

So as not to feel cold,

I would also go to the kitchen, to steal some food.

Your role is to explore the outer fence surrounding the clinic.

If it is less than ten feet high, we will climb it.

But if it is more than 10 feet we will dig a tunnel below it, we agreed?

This is the plan. OK. I see you here in ten minutes. “

Then they met again after ten minutes,

The person saw the food and blankets

His friend lying on the ground,

He cries in despair, hopelessly broken.

“It’s useless, we’ll be stuck here forever.

We can never escape.

We will stay here for the rest of our lives.

There is no fence! “

(Laughter)

Therefore, that person inevitably lacks Khotzeba.

I know Khutsba to “refuse to be surrounded by fake borders.”

It is more than just a rude or shocking position,

Something good, very good.

We all have a lot of delusional boundaries in our lives.

I once heard a BBC radio meeting on the Internet dating back to 1930.

With a survivor of the Titanic accident.

Almost 25 years after the disaster.

The meeting with a rich, aristocratic English man was aristocratic,

The announcer said:

“What did you talk about in the lifeboat,

While you wait for you to be saved? “

The man answered: “In fact, nothing.”

“Really? Did not you talk?”

“No.”

“If I assume you were in shock.”

“No. No, because no one has been identified.”

(Laughter)

I did not make that story, it’s a real story.

Now, if you are descended from such a culture,

There are so many abhorrent social boundaries

Which limits your behavior.

If you have a lot of social boundaries,

As we do in Northern Europe and as they do in Asia for example,

It would probably be intellectual.

There are many invisible barriers in our minds

Which we have not even imagined, challenges and hinders our thinking.

Thus, there are only two types of khotzba,

The bottom line is social khotzeba and intellectual kutzeba.

And the thing is little, falls under the intellectual Kutzeba

Uses of khotzeba

As far as the kinds of imaginary boundaries that limit us.

So, there are Khutzbha business, Khostapa political,

Economic Khutsba, Medical Khutsba,

There is a climate hatch, and even a cultural huts.

Business Gotzba is Air BNP. It’s Ober.

They broke rules that we did not originally know existed.

Indeed, it was possible years and years ago.

We could get Air BNP if we got Amazon.

The handicap was not technology; it was a handicap in people’s minds.

Habits of mind and assumptions and traditions.

The usual way of doing things.

We could have gotten to Ober 15 years ago,

As soon as we get a phone connected to the Internet.

Again, the obstacle was not technology, it was in our minds.

The political huts are the Hippies in the 1960s.

Political Khutsba is the cause of the emergence of the European Union.

Political Khotzeba means the Estonian initiative for electronic accommodation

Destroy the phantom walls that we did not realize existed

Only after the crash.

Economic Khutsba is a “Betquin”

Economic Khutsba is the euro, the existence of the euro.

Many people said:

“No country will accept a single currency

No country will accept the loss of its sovereignty

Which is the result of the single European currency. “

Well, that was not true, was it?

This is called the Khutzeba. You have Khutzbba in your pockets.

Do not do much, I did not mean it that way.

Stay calm.

There is a medical khotzeba.

For example, an Israeli man was killed by a car accident

“You will never walk again,” Qadr told him.

He said, “I will walk.”

He built himself a robotic external structure,

So he managed to walk.

By virtue of this person and thanks to his own khotzeba,

Thousands of people with paralysis around the world were able to walk again,

But many of them were able to walk for the first time.

Will we reject this position and consider it merely a rude or shocking behavior?

If so, then I would accept it.

Rude and shocking no problem.

Then we have a khotzba climatic.

Do you know that in the desert in Israel fish are raised for sale to Japan?

This is Khutzeba.

So, if you live in the desert and have a Khutzeba,

What is the natural thing you are doing?

Then we sell the fish to a fish-surrounded country.

This is the natural thing to do if you have Khutzeba sense.

Then there is cultural khotzeba.

Almost every art of the arts has something to transcend borders.

But some types of art go beyond borders.

An old assistant and a friend of mine,

A person named Desmond Morris, a zoologist – this is not Desmond –

He was responsible for mammals at the London Zoo in the 1950s,

He taught drawing to chimpanzees.

This is a chimpanzee, called Kongo.

Kongo drew about 400 paintings, and was presented by Desmond

At the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London,

Saying that these paintings were painted by “anonymous little artist,”

This is true in principle,

(Laughter)

Picasso and Dali became top fans of Kungju,

So much so that they have kept original paintings of Cungo in their homes.

He then invited Desmond to hold a press conference to meet this artist,

Then the curtain was removed,

To surprise the audience with a small chimpanzee playing in the theater,

There was a fuss within the artistic milieu.

But the artists grew more in love with him because they could

Seeing pure essence as they did in the paintings of Kongo.

They have been able to see the efforts they have made

Between the boundaries of the shape,

And the struggle to express what they wanted to express

Within those limits.

Critics thought him

Because they thought it was a joke or that he was underestimating their minds.

But they were not. It was quite serious.

Picasso invited Desmond to dinner in London,

In a very luxurious restaurant called The Avey,

Very fine restaurant where lots of social boundaries.

They sat there, having supper,

And approached the table critic technical said:

“Mr. Picasso, I see you are having dinner with this Antichrist, Desmond Morris.

Tell me, do you really believe in this ridiculous nonsense

About chimpanzee can drawing?

Surely we are the only humans

Who were blessed with the gift of sacred painting. “

Picasso replied without saying a word.

He stood up and shook his seat and made a threatening look like a chimpanzee

Throughout the restaurant, the ground hits his feet, “AWA-A-A-O-O-Oh”

Slapping tables, hitting walls, flying cups.

Then he sat panting, biting on the critic’s arm.

(Laughter)

This was his way of saying, my companion, we are all monkeys.

He knew, Picasso knew that the monkey was painting.

Of course, Desmond Morris knew that the monkey was drawing.

Chimpanzees were locked that a chimpanzee could draw.

The artistic critic was the best known. he knew. He was an expert.

I realized that the chimpanzee could not draw, because he did not have a khotzeba.

So, do not listen to the critics.

It has been thought, that what has not happened before,

It can never happen.

If that formula were true, we would still be in the trees,

We rub our armpits and eat bananas.

It was up to a monkey who owned Khutzeba to get out of the trees

And checking what was going on in the ground.

I can assure you that the mother of a monkey said:

“Oy, oy, where are you going?

(Laughter)

Do you think you are better than us? Go back to the tree.

You belong to this place. You need to be aware of your status.

Do not stand out yourself, do not pay attention. Do not raise problems. “

So thank the Lord for that monkey.

How do we apply them? Let’s move on to the practical part.

How do we apply khotzeba?

Khutzeba is not just a trait or trait,

It is something you do.

How does Khutzeba apply in your life?

Because you need to: we enter a very mysterious world,

Everyone needs to be more creative than they were before,

Especially those with respectable principles.

Those who are devoid of principles have many Khutzeba,

Do not worry about them.

We need to have the Khutzeba principles.

So, how do you do it?

It is a very simple procedure.

Not easy, but simple.

The first thing you do is determine what you want to accomplish,

What are your goals, this is beautiful and simple.

Then the dreary part begins,

Where you identify all the things that stand in your way,

All barriers, barriers and restrictions,

All “facts” that block you.

Then select – here’s the fun part –

Any of which are actually “facts”.

And any of them are just “facts” are actually incorrect,

They are just traditions and assumptions

And mental habits can be challenged.

You will be very surprised to see that a large number of them are simply incorrect.

It is necessary for Khutzeba to only believe in it.

It requires khotzeba to stop believing in it

Jump forward.

Then comes the next stage, which is more enjoyable,

When you discover that many of these facts are just facts

It depends on the validity of other facts in your logical chain.

I will give you an example of how this works, from my career.

A customer came to me and said:

“We are a wind power company, we manufacture wind turbines.”

I said to myself, “Oh, welcome, handsome!

He said: “No, no, not that ugly,

It is like this, it is very beautiful, and smaller,

So, it’s very beautiful.

We want to distribute them all over the cities, car parks and more. “

So we have included all the facts that have been blocked,

It appeared that a number of facts had been blocked.

Turbines generate electricity,

That’s what you do and that’s all you do.

This is a fact.

You can not reap money from wind turbines

Except by selling the electricity it generates.

This is also true.

In some countries, electricity prices are very low

To the extent that you will not recover your money from the sale of electricity.

Fact also.

In any case, people do not like turrets,

Because the turbines are ugly.

Two separate facts.

People do not like turrets. This is a fact.

The insults are ugly. This is a fact.

That is why we are challenging these two facts.

Above all, turbines generate only electricity,

That’s all you do,

So you can only make money by selling electricity.

Is that really true?

This has always been true until now, but did Moses descend from Mount Moses?

He said: “Ladies and gentlemen, the Lord’s command

Turbines produce only electricity,

That’s all she’s allowed to do, forbidden to do anything else. “

No this is not true.

They learned that if you put media screens on the throttle,

If the rights of distinctive marks are sold,

Then you can make a lot of money from it

More than you earn from selling electricity.

This is an example of turrets

The company hopes to develop it in a location in Belgium.

So, the first two facts are gone, which means that the following truth,

Which is “you can not make money only from selling electricity,”

That truth disappears and dissolves and dissolves in nothingness.

Then the next truth begins to fade as well,

Which are “people do not like turbines,”

The reason, let’s be honest,

People love free electricity much more than they hate turbines.

In any case, even if the turbines remain very ugly,

Should not that always be the case?

Can not you make it beautifully? Definitely can.

There are people in the world who know how to make beautiful things.

So this company, called Windfair, went to Pininfarina,

An independent Italian design company famous for its Ferrari design,

“Will you make us a beautiful wind turbine?” She said.

“Mama Mia

(Laughter)

They did not, because Italians do not say that much.

But they said: “Si,”

They say “C” is a certain amount of Khutzeba,

Because they work on cars, right?

“From From,” fossil fuels burn the planet.

So they needed a certain amount of Khotzeba to work on a product

He is a public enemy of fossil fuels, and they did.

And thus developed a beautiful turbine.

Rich said everywhere: “Well, I want one of them! Yes, please!

Yup! I want her in my garden.

I do not care if it does not generate electricity.

I only want one! “

And now I am not here to sell you turbines, although their price is very acceptable.

(Laughter)

Not much more than Ferrari frankly.

I am here to sell you Khotzeba, your own Khotzeba.

I want you to own Gotzeba.

The world wants you to own Gotzeba.

Because I can not make a big difference by myself, and no one else can.

As I said, the world is ruled by predators devoid of principles,

So I and everyone else wants you to play your khotzeba game.

If you do not want to live in a world ruled by predators without principles,

If you want to leave a world where your children deserve to live,

You need to develop the art of Khutzeba.

Go back to that kindergarten. Go back to that sign.

Replace it with something more encouraging.

Replace it with: “Welcome to the pure possibility,”

Because so be your imagination when you are good at using it.

Deepen in that forest, do not be afraid.

Will be rewarded with innumerable riches.

As well as for the rest of us.

Thank you very much.

(clap)
