Sucesso: Você Pode! | Mary Elbe Queiroz | TEDxDeVryRecifeWomen

Good evening.

I feel like a successful woman.

What’s wrong with saying that?

People are usually intimidated

in talking about the qualities, the achievements and the success itself.

On the other hand, he is not ashamed to say of failures and mistakes,

especially women.

I am from Ipubi, a city of 23 thousand inhabitants.

And I got where I came from, that’s exactly what I want to pass on to you.

as a way of showing that I am not an alien,

I am no different from anyone.

Anyone, you who are there can also get where you want.

But, we talk about success, and what is success?

Success is what?

It’s power, it’s career, it’s family, it’s happiness, it’s having children.

Breathe in and think a little about what success is for you.

You choose, each one chooses your concept of success

and runs after him.

As I told you, I was born there in Pernambuco, in Ipubi,

distant city, has on the map.

(Laughs)

At the age of four I came,

I went with my family to live in Petrolina,

then at age 14, there was no college

I came to study law here in Recife,

850 km away, flying with my older sister driving.

Away from the family, she was a teenager,

but I came back exactly from what I thought would be my life goal,

because, for me, success is to achieve the goal that I propose,

That’s what I set out to do, is not it?

And to that end, I have, within me, been able to have peace and harmony.

I was exactly doing,

I did the master’s degree here in Recife too,

then I did my doctorate in São Paulo,

I did postdoctoral studies in Lisbon,

and today I give lectures in Brazil.

I give lectures in Brazil, outside Brazil,

But to get here, I studied a lot.

Study nights and nights, weekend,

but I managed to balance love, dating, fun.

I was married, I have two beautiful, wonderful daughters.

I divorced, I had a difficult, painful divorce,

but I was not crying and I did not regret it.

Do you know the “get up, shake up the dust, and spin around” thing?

After five days and five nights crying, I got up and said,

“What am I doing here?”

I took a shower, put on a red dress, and wrote my second book.

I never gave in to lamentations or crying.

Because? Because I was exactly sure where I wanted to go.

And then, in this walk,

several things were important to me.

I discovered that there are some keys

that all successful people have in common,

and that anyone can also get,

just want

The first thing you have to watch for is to believe in yourself.

Usually, especially women,

they have no self-esteem,

have no self-confidence, are not sure that they can,

or when they can.

We can do it all!

We can even make another being inside us,

that will say to achieve the objective that is being sought.

Self esteem. You have to have love for you.

If you do not even love yourself, how do you want other people to love you?

So you have to believe because you can.

One other thing that is very important

is determination.

Focus. You have to know exactly what you want.

And to run backwards, not going over anyone or stepping on others,

You do not get anywhere with that.

But you have to go there in search of what you want,

and not stop to mourn or cry,

because you will need to work hard.

No one can reach their goal

without working.

How many nights I was clear,

in my post-doctorate I would wake up at four o’clock in the morning,

the day had not even dawned,

when it dawned, I looked, it was beautiful that sunrise

there on Boa Viagem beach.

But not just the 99%, you have to give yourself 100%.

And in these 100% you can not forget to exactly balance the family,

which is the most important.

Dedicate yourself to the children,

and also dedicate yourself to yourself, because you also have to take care of yourself.

It’s like a cake:

You’ll make a cake, have all the ingredients;

if one is missing, it is not complete.

So it has to be 100% dedication and work.

And one thing I find superimportant:

transforming difficulties, obstacles into challenges.

Instead of facing you,

and this is true for everyone, men and women,

instead of facing you that it is a difficulty, that will stop you,

You gotta put it in your head that you’re gonna get over it.

because you are seeing far,

you are seeing exactly where you want to go.

And if you think so, you arrive.

It’s difficult, I will not say it’s easy.

There are days that you will wake up and you will be tired, discouraged,

but you have to move on.

And here’s something important.

Follow the example.

Look at someone you can be inspired by, you admire,

sometimes that person is there on your side.

I had, on one occasion, something very interesting in my life,

had a congress of Tax Law in Bahia, that every year I went there,

and when a student came to speak to me one year ago,

“Teacher, teacher,

I was looking out of the audience and I saw the lady so studious,

and I wanted to do masters. “

Then I turned to him: “Why do not you?”

She turned to me and said, “Can I?”

I said, “Sure, I just want to.”

We said goodbye and she left.

The following year, I went to lecture at the same congress, here comes the student:

“Teacher, teacher, I’m doing masters!”

I said, “Oh good, I’m glad!”

She said, “Teacher, I was looking from the audience and I talked to my friend:

‘Wow, besides being a student, she’s thin!’ “

(Laughs)

I looked at her like that and said, “Why do not you go on a diet?”

(Laughs)

Then she turned, “Can I?”

“Sure, I just want to.”

We said goodbye, and I left.

In the third year, I get there and there she comes, lean and shouting at me:

“Teacher, teacher, I’m finishing my master’s degree!”

Said, “Wow, cool, when’s the bank going to be?”

And then she said to me:

“Ah, Professor, I have a very serious difficulty.

at my wedding.

What do you think? “

(Laughs)

I stopped, opened my eyes, and said,

“Wait, in this matter I will not say,

this alone you can decide.

But meanwhile,

you study, you work, have your financial independence,

has autonomy,

and then you decide what you want. “

So enough, sometimes, a word from someone who is close to you

to motivate you.

But do not wait for that word.

Be yourself your own inspiration and seek within yourself that weapon,

convincing yourself every day that you can.

In this walk you will identify the people who have already succeeded

and will know exactly that some of these traits are important.

For me these were the highlights that go with me to this day.

In the face of adversity, in the face of negative thoughts,

we get tired, there’s a day that we do not want to get up,

but always looking away at what I’m trying to achieve.

Today, one of the concerns I have, of course, of tax law,

is to think how I can contribute so that other women know

and be aware of how they can get here as well.

And it depends on them, it’s up to them to decide.

And I had a very strong example inside my house, which was my mother.

A strong woman, who instigated, it was she who left Ipubi, Petrolina,

that put me to study.

But you do not have to wait for a person from the outside or inside.

Look really within you.

And then I have a tip for everyone:

find a magic word that resonates inside you

and make you instigate the moment you are feeling weak and discouraged.

My magic word is:

“I am me, and alligator is a water-bug!”

(Laughs)

What does that mean? Does not matter.

(Laughs)

It means I’m strong, I can.

Why, and if I can, anyone can.

Why not? You can also!

Thanks.

(Applause)
