Hi. I love comics.

I think they are a wonderful way to tell stories

and are an art form that does not receive the [recognition] it deserved.

So here I am going to try to show you the values of the comics

and convince you to try.

First, I want to take the bias

of which comics are only superheroes of Marvel and DC.

There are millions and millions of other types of comics.

For example,

“Persepolis”.

It is the real story of a girl in Iran during the Muslim Revolution,

and how she coexists with it.

Or “Fables”.

The story is fictitious, obviously,

as if fables lived in New York nowadays.

Or even have stories that are of the heroes we know,

but with a different twist,

like “Superman, between Scythe and the Hammer”

which tells the story of a communist superman.

Comic books lately have received more value,

but not enough,

and it all began with this book, “A Contract with God,”

written by Will Eisner.

Will Eisner is one of the greatest comic artists in history,

and he wanted his stories to be taken seriously.

So he started using the term “graphic novel”,

to try to make her gain more respect.

Comics do one thing very well: movement.

Here, you can see that comics make fast movements very well,

you can see all the speed of all the movements,

but also make slow movements very well,

slow, with many details,

and it’s really cool that you can feel the movement of each scene moving.

It’s cool.

They make the move so well

that serials and movies use something very similar to comics,

which are the storyboard,

to try to show how your scenes have to be filmed.

The comic books are so good that [comic-based films]

use their own comics as storyboard,

as in “300”: some scenes are taken directly from the comic;

in “Watchmen”: most of the film is taken from a comic;

and in “Sin City”, in which all the scenes and all the esthetics of the film

are taken literally from the comic, all exactly the same.

And the comics are very similar to the series,

because each monthly magazine looks like an episode

and every bow looks like a season.

The experience is very similar.

But in comparison to series and movies,

in fact, movies have one thing that comics do not have,

and therefore [these] are better: the actors.

In comics, it’s not like a bad actor to spoil a character you like.

The whole interpretation is yours,

and this makes you can read the comic at your own pace …

You can look at a picture of the comics.

and spend hours examining every detail of it,

or you can read fast, all in your rhythm,

and this is very cool.

Some of the movies that are based on comics are “Kingsman”,

“Men in Black”, “V for Vendetta” and “300”,

and some of the series are “Jessica Jones”, “Legends of Tomorrow”

and “The Walking Dead.”

But then, it looks like I’m saying comics are books

with mixed motion arts.

But one thing is missing:

the art.

Art is one of the most important parts of the comic.

The comics are amazing in making art,

for example, with grandiose scenes like this or the next one,

or, in the comic itself, when you see the story being told,

they can tell in a beautiful way,

and joining the onomatopoeia in the design,

or showing the title of the story within the comic book design.

In “Spirit,” which is written by Will Eisner,

all titles are written within the design of the pages,

make sense,

or buildings writing “Spirit”, or here leaves flying and writing “Spirit”,

and it’s really cool the design of everything.

So I hope I’ve shown you something you like

and that you give a chance to this art form.

Thank you.

(Applause)
