Pare e sinta o cheiro das flores . É mais simples do que você imagina | Gabriel Silva | TEDxFranca

I’m here to talk to you about my career.

or, as I like to put it,

My treasure map.

And it was going to be a pretty boring lecture if it was from A to B and end, right?

But it is not so easy;

more or less this, more I leave the end.

My trajectory, I think she’s interesting

because I am a great dreamer.

I am a person who believes that nothing in life

it’s impossible.

From an early age,

I always told everyone I wanted to be an airplane pilot:

doctor’s office, new year at school, a new friend you know,

I always introduced myself to that.

And he had only one answer: “This boy is crazy, right?

He’ll never be a pilot. From France in the interior, knows no one. “

But I did not forget,

I always wanted to be a pilot.

As I was very young, I started with sports.

Since it was a dream a little closer to me.

I tried basketball, soccer, tennis,

I believe like many young people and boys.

As I am a dreamer,

I wanted a sport that was really challenging.

So I chose the sneakers,

which would be what would help me in my career,

starting at an early age.

It was only a joke until the age of 13,

when I decided to take a bigger step

and try to start my career in fact in the United States.

I moved there

I had the opportunity to train tennis all day

and study in the time left over.

And it was not so easy,

first by the change of country,

the coexistence with people of all that is the place of the world

and that dream is over, when I saw that it was not really for me.

(Laughs)

But, being in the United States, I had the opportunity to redeem

that previous dream,

of flying.

There is no limit or minimum age to start.

So at the age of 15 I started my training,

at 16 I flew alone,

at age 17 I already had my first qualification,

which was purchased on my birthday

which was the first day he could have her,

and at 18 I was already an instructor.

I taught the people of the whole world how to fly.

At this point we are more or less in 2008,

which was when the economic crisis hit the whole world,

but mainly the United States,

and my career, which had just begun,

was almost stopping,

since the economy really did not supply the world with the means

to run after that dream too.

That’s where I took another step.

I returned to Brazil,

where at that time the economy was still better,

and had the opportunity to be employed by a large airline,

this at 19 years.

With 20, I was already doing international flights

and the graph of my career was something like this:

he started slowly, jumped a little bit higher

and suddenly it rose at once.

Two years later this graph has turned a bit,

it started to get a bit more linear,

stability.

As I climbed very fast, I reached that position

which many people would reach very late in their careers.

And I started to see

that I would get everything I wanted,

just had to wait.

So just sit back, relax and enjoy the trip,

that everything I dreamed I would reach.

He was already pilot,

I already lived what I wanted to do.

Until I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

I knew nothing about this disease, about this condition of life,

but one thing: I would have to take insulin.

And insulin and pilot do not match,

my career was over.

One more step.

From São Paulo, where I was performing my profession,

to France, city where we are,

city where I was born, where my family lives.

This diagnosis required a change of life for me.

I would have to adapt to a new situation,

to a routine medication, visits to doctors,

a nutrition completely different from what I was used to.

All this until it would be easy,

but in my head I was in a maze.

What would become of me now?

From a very young age speaking that he wants to be an airplane pilot,

now I do not even know who I am.

That’s when I started working with shoes,

by the structure my family had.

It was the opportunity I had to put my foot on the floor

and try to understand what I would be from now on.

He was still inside the labyrinth,

in person.

That’s when I met a phrase

that serves me to this day:

“Every time you’re in a maze, stop and smell the flowers,

they will guide you out of the way.

Realize everything that is around you. “

That, for me, at that moment, meant finding a new passion.

I needed to find something that was bigger than I,

greater than the routine from eight to five in the afternoon,

work, sleep, eat, work, sleep, eat …

I needed something bigger.

And I tried several things,

dreaming, always.

I thought it would be a good way for me to go,

after all it’s a profession in which I believe,

which explains how to understand the whole world.

It lasted one day.

One day at college and I never came back.

(Laughs)

I thought about staying in front of the keyboard all day,

whether as writer, programmer,

something that put me with computing daily;

it was an activity I liked very much.

He did not go forward either.

(Laughs)

I stayed in the shoes.

But as I already told you, I am a dreamer,

and I did not want to stand there alone.

At one point I thought my health was more important

and that I needed to change all those aviation terms

for new people with diabetes

and he had to face,

with the same professionalism, with the same dedication,

this new challenge.

My health is more important.

I’ll stop, smell the flowers and try to adapt to my new situation.

I’ve looked for some way to improve my health;

very simple:

I became a vegetarian, changing my diet,

abolishing the consumption of any kind of meat at one time.

I did not take the red meat first and continue with the fish, no.

One day I stopped everything.

This brought a great improvement to my life.

and I was ready to take the next step.

I became a vegan.

The vegan, in addition to food, abolishes the input of animal origin

of all its consumption:

shoe, belt, wallet, car seat … anyway …

Veganism demands absolute respect for all forms of life.

Even the honey bee.

Oops, I work with shoes.

(Laughs)

And now? What am I going to use?

What am I going to do in my day to day?

I came back to the place that I know well,

that labyrinth.

I already know what to do:

I’ll stop, smell the flowers.

and I’ll try to make those lemons a good lemonade.

Absolute respect with every form of life.

I’m going to make a shoe for me

that others will surely like too.

I mounted a brand of vegan shoes in 2013,

six months later we set up our own factory,

which today remains the only 100% vegan factory in the world.

This is my treasure map, it’s just missing one little thing: the X.

I left,

I went around the world

following my dream,

and returned to the same place where my true treasure was.

So what I have to share with you:

It’s for everyone to remember,

when you have a problem, you’re in a maze,

stop and smell the flowers,

the solution will be around you, you do not have to go far.

A stone in your path can become your great ally.

What is around you, can transform your life

and often goes, truly.

We are the result of our experiences,

so leave, live, try, err and hit,

because your treasure map may be much closer than you might think.

Thank you.

(Applause)
