Getting Past Our Walls: Finding Innovation Through Imitation | Ed Castro | TEDxSnoIsleLibraries

I would like to share some stories about confronting obstacles,

And how you have exceeded some of my own.

Creativity through tradition is a process experienced by most musicians

Where imitate the artist what they love strongly,

During the operation,

Better understand their personality as musicians.

May be able to identify their musical identity.

For me, I tend to extrapolate this idea,

I do it in different ways, I do this very much in fact.

I do this when I study.

And clearly when playing.

And when I sit with my children.

For me, tradition is a gateway to breaking barriers.

In a way I use the process of imitation itself

To help myself overcome my obstacles.

When I was a university student,

My lips were severely damaged by excessive use,

I was in pain.

You’re like a runner who can not use his legs.

You can do a lot of things but you can not do them either

The way I used to was this was frustrating

Because I could not do as I should,

But my colleagues did not notice me.

They were much better at playing the trumpet,

They continued to improve more and more.

When frustration began to grow, she decided to leave school.

At about the same time,

My grandfather retired after 40 years of work as a cobbler;

The shoes were fit.

He had a shoe repair shop on the west side of Manhattan.

I lived with him in his apartment and we were talking,

He felt that I was not okay.

I told him about my love.

His advice was good to me.

Mainly included:

If other trumpet players are good,

Well, you’ll be good too.

And …

At that moment I said, “Well, he did not understand me.”

“You do not become a trumpet easily.”

I did what any young man would do at the age of 19:

Became defensive and changed the subject immediately.

(Laughter)

But after a few days, I realized it was right.

I just have to fix my problems and work to solve them.

So I specifically imitated,

I began to imitate the trumpet player that I loved very much.

This was my teacher and teacher in the play,

I did not think I would become like him,

But he seemed very comfortable playing in any circumstances placed in it.

One of the tools he used was authorship.

A musical piece to put himself in position

To rest in any position exposed,

So he was composing constantly.

In fact, one of the things she did was to write a book about the diodes,

And played trumpet bronzes –

I played it in every lesson of my lessons, and it was wonderful;

I could hear them.

It dealt with a particular issue, whether by counting or tone.

So if he could write the diodes

To address his problems as a professional and be a professional.

Maybe I can do that to rehabilitate my professional skill.

I started writing my own binaries.

I finally felt confident

To bring diodes to trumpet lessons.

He encouraged me to write more.

This motivation led me to share these binaries with my colleagues,

They encouraged me more and more.

So I have a bunch of diodes now,

My skills were gradually rehabilitated every time,

So they are much better.

My lips have improved and I play binaries and pass through this process.

In this case,

Tradition was not what I used to write a piece of music.

It was more like using authoring as a means

To address my physical problems with the trumpet,

And then the mental problems that accompany the playing.

I did not feel confident as a musician.

These diodes helped me overcome this obstacle.

In the end and almost a year later,

I went to the summer music concert,

I studied with three great musicians,

One of them was a writer I love,

A short melody was heard

I wrote it for a pentagram rhythm I loved.

He stopped me behind the scenes and said:

“Why do not you bring your pieces to our lessons?”

I want to see them with you. “

That is what I did; I brought my binaries.

We started playing binary.

We played a group of them and then played other pieces,

“Can we do that?” He asked.

I had strange scenarios

Such as: “Do we saddle them like circus music?”

Do we pretend that we (Miles Davis)? Let’s make them feel like we’re underwater. “

All kinds of alien ideas

This was very fun and frankly we were obsessed and loved this.

(Laughter)

But at the end of the session he told me,

“Why do not you make other binaries next week?

Except this time, make it a topic.

Theme for movement or colors.

Such a subject. “

This was clearly more difficult than expected.

(Laughter)

Because I could not do this.

I wrote everything I wrote.

It was – frankly and to be honest with you,

I did not have such a problem.

As you can see, every binary I wrote was for a particular purpose.

I had to fix something; I had to deal with a problem,

I did not think of writing something simple.

This was not easy.

So I now have this hurdle:

Obstacle to the writer.

She’s here.

Instead of dealing with it as it did in the past,

What I did in the end was to direct all creative energy

And reached the music arrangement.

So I took music from the previous authors

I imitated her – imitating her.

So I turned that music into a quintuple rhythm and eventually the time passed.

I did not think of writing but in order.

A danger to my heart is broken

For a large band and a magnet.

This piece is called “Giant Piece” by Kenny Wheeler.

I would like to share part of it with you,

Just to know why this piece attracted me.

(“Gentle Pace” music start)

(End of music)

So after a period of trying to modify this piece to a pentagram,

I faced another obstacle.

I could not handle this kind of music.

However, I tried to extract something from it,

I wanted to know if she had arranged it.

I sat in front of the piano in my room.

I did not know the tone; I remember that.

(Laughter)

I began to play the strings, this was the first chord.

(Strings on the piano)

This is the second chord.

(Strings on the piano)

I was supposed to play the third.

But I skipped the line for some reason, and played this chord

(Strings on the piano)

This was the fifth tendon.

But in my ear, I wanted this tone.

(Tone on the piano)

But this tune with this chord

(Strings on the piano)

It caused a great tension for me.

That was what I felt then.

I was working on getting a second graduate degree.

I needed a break for a concert.

I was suffering from insomnia.

This musical tone offered me a lot of pressure.

For some reason, I felt that I had discovered that pressure.

In the end, this discovery led to the creation of a complete piece of music.

This movement led to the emergence of two other movements,

This pressure I felt became embodied on paper,

I now have a piece I can play at the concert,

The same basic process was used in imitation.

I tried to know what other authors feel like.

I tried to rewrite it,

I did it with a second piece I composed for the trumpet and the piano.

These two pieces were then recorded

By a friend I call him “the entrepreneur of thought.”

He had an interesting project and was always unruly.

In the end, I composed a broken

Using the same tradition

For a school band.

So I used the imitation approach several times;

Re-writing the essence of anything that attracts me to start it.

This has been used to discover other ideas.

For me, he went beyond those two obstacles at the same time

Where you need to handle a broken (Kenny Wheeler)

And then clearly the imposition of the teacher to play

Years ago the author of an abstract idea,

You have exceeded these two blocks in this single chord.

I would like to share this piece with you now.

I would like to share the first movement of (Fracture Trans).

They represent a lot of tension

But it also represents a lot of comfort and reassurance.

(“Breakthrough Trans” music start).

(End of music)

(clap)

thank you.
