Ending the pursuit of perfection | Iskra Lawrence | TEDxUniversityofNevada

It’s funny that my conversation really begins with:

“We have a problem”

We had a little while ago

Where I suffered from Hazoukah

They were very violent,

Fortunately things are fine now,

I can start,

We have a problem which is though

The most important relationship in our lives is our relationship

But we are ignorant of them.

I want to challenge you to think about it

We were aware of how care was taken

By ourselves by self-care,

Is it possible

To value our lives,

We become happier,

We fight anxiety inside and we can reach

To our full ability?

For example, have you ever blamed your body?

“My God, that dress is so beautiful!”

“I can not wear it, clusters may appear.”

“I know why he does not call me again.

Because I gained ten pounds last week.

A crush for those burritos! “

(Laughter)

The idea is,

Body image is often associated with agitation.

But the truth,

Men and boys are also affected

Eating disorders

Mental health

Infect anyone

At any age, at any time.

This is why it matters to me

The reason for our presence here is to communicate with all of you.

Many young people go these days

To the Sports Club

They abuse the use

The use of hormones,

Because it may enjoy

Photos of Silvie

With so many responses

If they get

Six abdominal muscles, not beer.

(Laughter)

I know when I

You are the youngest,

I was watching

In that mirror

Every day,

I hate what I saw.

“Why do not I have a distance

Between the thighs? “

“Why does this thigh seem to have eaten the other one?”

(Laughter)

“Aha, more pimples?

are you kidding me?”

“I hate myself.”

This is very sad!

Because I can not

Restore those years

From self-hatred,

Calorie craze

And jealousy

So I decided to use those experiences,

To better understand my relationship

With my body and myself.

By practicing self-care,

I managed to change my life.

Today I hope to encourage all of you

If you have not already started,

Start with a journey of self-love.

It’s crazy these days,

We suffer from tremendous pressures, and now social media.

With the renaissance of the media, we literally have

Weapons of mass destruction of self-confidence 24/7.

You young people, consume the media.

Have you ever spent an hour, two or even three years of your life?

Drowned in someone profile?

Yeah?

Think, “Oh, wow, look, they’re a little fond of some.”

“Oh, they spend all these amazing holidays”

“They have the job of dreams!

“Why is my life so?”

The scary thing is that this is not true.

The media is sophisticated, refined, and often comprehensive,

And even sometimes they are lifestyle.

So you should know that.

So we need to know how to deal

With these pressures in schools.

I became my self-care education

And their inclusion in the education system.

Because we have to learn how to take care of ourselves

Mentally, physically and emotionally.

I am very grateful, I have more than three million online followers

I pledge to be frank and honest with them,

I will not exaggerate my own images, because I must forgive myself.

I have been persistent in this area for 13 years.

I have recovered my image

Which even my family could not distinguish when I turned the album over.

Literally they could not tell!

I might look at these pictures and think,

“Oh, wow, how half my arm went, and my leg is much thinner!”

“I am free of defects.”

“Is this what I meant to show?”

“I meant that perfect picture?”

“Wow, well, I can not look like this and that’s me!”

That’s wrong!

So why do not we feel insecure in the first place?

Because from a very early age, we are doomed to believe

That our success and happiness are highly dependent on our attractiveness.

Think of all the princes and princesses I have seen:

Moderate structure, disciplined and long and proportionate appearances.

Magazines and the celebration of extreme weight loss are actually unhealthy.

Or those who clenched and stuffed to look 20 years younger.

Because if we feel insecure, we are motivated customers.

We can sell anti-wrinkle cream for age 13 years,

The sling bra is definitely ridiculous,

Because I lived a few years ago, where they actually wore a bra

Under the bra to show elusive cleavage.

(Laughter)

Yes, that happens, so it is with the magnification of the rear.

There are backpacks in all the jeans you see, just words.

(Laughter)

I have been training recently

By the National Organization of Eating Strikes in the US,

I am now her ambassador and for what is called “project body.”

It is the first scientifically approved course

To help prevent eating disorders in adolescents.

It is only four one-hour sessions,

The impact on these students was amazing,

He assured me that we should talk about this.

So I thought of sharing some of that day.

The main concept we know is “the myth of perfect beauty.”

All children have magazines and choose the ideal body

Then we work to refute that to them.

“Ok, then what is the perfect body then?”

“Well, the length, the big breasts and skinny waist,

Or it is the muscles of the stomach is silly, brown and hair smooth and flawless. “

Is that real? “

“No.”

“Can you reach him?”

“No.”

So what are the sacrifices and the cost to try to get this body?

It is very harmful to your mental and physical health.

And guess what?

Who wins in this battle?

Brands, magazines, and pharmaceutical laboratories.

Who loses?

We are losing!

So, we need to care about our bodies not for this reason.

We need to stop trying to get perfect.

Because we are really good enough.

If we can start redefining the ideal beauty,

Imagine celebrating someone’s achievements,

Their work, their personalities, their differences and their values.

For me that is beauty.

I recently faced a challenge with three women,

Who refused to wear the bikini altogether,

To make them wear it, directly

On national television

Against three million people

And in the streets of London in front of the masses.

These women – whom I speak to school children –

They were elderly.

There is a woman in her seventies,

She had recently lost her partner and had extra skin.

There was another lady, she was a mother and had trouble eating

She really suffered the shape of her body throughout her life.

The other woman was horrified by her former partner.

We go behind the scenes and you are so, “Ok, I wish I could do this.”

They called me and said,

“Iskra, you have to go weird to switch clothes off.

They are frustrated. “

Well, not surprising!

They are stuck there in the room with a mirror and five swimming suits and they said to them,

“You have to choose one of them and you will go outside with her apostates.”

Come on, this is a lot of pressure.

So, I went in there and taught them

One of my most important areas of self-care, which I call “mirror challenge.”

First, they stand in that mirror, and the first thing they do –

And many of you are sure to do it too – is looking at your flaws.

We have to change that debate.

So, I brought them in front of the mirror wearing Bikini, and told them,

“Choose five things you love in themselves.”

I gave them some examples and they started.

“Well, I’m full of vitality.”

“I’m a wonderful friend.”

“I am creative, independent, persevering, I am courageous.”

Then they began to think, “Oh, I really wonderful!”

They began to feel proud of themselves.

Then I told them, “Now, pick five things

You love it in your bodies for what it offers you. “

Because we need to change the debate, not just about how your body looks.

Your body is amazing.

So, they started to say … it was very inspiring to me too.

Because you never know what people will come to mention.

One woman said, “Stretch marks,

So I was not immune to them, managed me.

I managed this stomach until I gave birth to my baby,

I now have grandchildren, and this is the best part of my life. “

Another woman said, “I am grateful for these two hands,

Because I was able to be a seamstress, and work for my family. “

Another woman said, “Well, I love my legs

Because I love jogging in the English countryside,

Does that calm me down and make me happy?

These women were smiling.

They felt the Qimiya.

They were very proud of themselves.

I started telling them

This will not only change their lives,

To be able to bosom your body, and go out there and be confident,

But women and men at home, who feel what they have done,

This would also help them.

For them to stand there and be able to do so,

Would also strengthen them.

I still do not know 100% if they will,

But we go there, on the right of the Times in London,

Sure enough, take off their three covers.

There was tears, hug,

Two of them did not wear their covers again.

Walkers all the way straight

During the television program

Check out the dressing room,

They were like, “Well, here we are, I do it, so I will not back down!”

(Laughter)

It was a change of life.

I never felt that determined, I was full of hope.

That’s why I’m so excited to be here with you today

To share these stories with you.

That is one of my main ways of self-care.

The second method is called “the list of gratitude.”

I have an example, I had to use it not for a long time,

I was with my lover in Los Angeles, and we went shopping.

We went to the store, and I saw these fantastic design jeans,

I was like this, “Ok, I’ll deal with myself.”

“What is your occupation?”

I said, “Hmmm, like 12. I do not know what that is, maybe 31.”

She said, “Well, our biggest size is this,

It is 29, but it is very stretchable.

Absolutely will satisfy you. Size fits all. “

So I said, “Ok.”

I went to the dressing room, the worst place on earth.

It’s terrifying as hell, often hot,

Lighting from the top, the mirror is very poor,

And then feel like your inner demon there

Waiting for a pounce on you.

(Laughter)

So, I’m at home with these jeans and like I’m in a competition against jeans.

And I’m there, as if to say, “Well, it does not look right.”

She yells, “I bet it looks fantastic!”

I say, “Not yet! Coming there!”

(Laughter)

When I was about to get there, I said,

“Iskra, you have to surrender.”

And when I heard it.

Crashed.

A 15-year-old boy came back and said,

“You do not deserve to wear these jeans.

“You are very fat.

“Why does not it fit you even the biggest size in the store?”

Then I was as follows,

“Come on, Escra, come on! Use self-care, come on, come on, come on!”

I recalled the list of gratitude.

I want you to start your list right away, tonight.

Because she saved me at that moment.

“Wow, well, I’m on vacation, I have a wonderful lover,

He loves me and I am this size, very clear, this is good. “

(Laughter)

“I’m in Los Angeles, I’m from England, this is great.”

“I am healthy, I am alive, I have clean water.”

And then I began to think, “What the hell?”

These jeans are here, this cloth

Trying to frustrate me now.

It will not destroy my day.

I refuse to let her destroy what I feel about myself? “

So I used self-care, that knowledge, I thanked God for what I have.

Because otherwise, I might have gone out there, crying annoying

My lover may ask me, “What is your sermon?”

This is another aspect of self-care I offer you.

If we go back, why does this seem outstanding to some,

But it is very important in fact,

Because there are some shocking statistics there.

Did you know, as a teenager,

You are at risk of having a 12-minute eating disorder

More than any other disease?

And that there are more than 30 million of us,

In America, they have eating disorder.

And 90% of all children die from suicide

Suffer from mental health disorder.

As I said earlier, social media are growing.

The pressure is worse.

And 52% of American teenagers say they have been harassed online.

I have experienced, directly, hate and phishing online.

We also need to talk about it. It is for me a part of self-care.

Because the bully

They only reflect the mistrust they have on you.

I know that when someone says something bad about me, it’s a reflection

What he feels inside him.

But we need to educate people, educate the victims and the proliferators,

This prevents its occurrence.

One way I do it is to ignore it, report it, and ban it.

Delete it, act as if it never happened.

But I found another good way.

I recently got a comment, for me, it was hysteria,

But a few followers follow them up,

For this they said, “You are the reason to make a health care system mess,

You want to lose McDonald’s and stop eating chips. “

How silly is this?

It happened that I was in a set with my underwear, I was taking a picture and the chips around me,

And I thought,

“Hmm, this looks like a good opportunity to show them what I’m on.”

So, I decided to take a picture of me covered with chips and eat it,

Like I say “Damn.”

Such as “Hell no! Will you frustrate me?

I will continue to eat chips and more of the fact now,

Really really liked the chips now. “

Because …

(Laughter)

I wanted to strengthen myself.

I wanted to be able to use something that was negative

And turn it into something positive.

Sure enough, I think that video got 18 million views or the like

Because that’s what we want to see, we want to support each other.

We want to strengthen each other.

I am very grateful to be here today, and for my ability to communicate with all of you,

Because I want to encourage everyone of you

Get started with yourself right away.

I want you to understand that if you learn self-care,

And self-care, then you can offer self-care.

Imagine that you are able to give the person you love the gift of self-love.

Talk to your body in a loving way.

It’s the only thing you have,

It is your home, and worthy of your respect.

If you see anyone demolish themselves, rebuild them again.

See your life grow positively

When you stop striving for perfection.

Because the perfect ideal beauty is to be you incomplete.

Thank you so much, everyone.

(Laughter)

thank you.

(Cheers) (Applause)
