My name is Suresh Jayaker,
I am a user experience designer.
I work for a local agency called Cluj.
Today, I’m excited to talk about design and design thinking.
Design thinking is a process,
How to solve problems.
We of course have been taught to make the best choice, and to do so,
Think more closely.
What design thinking does is encourage us to think,
To think outside the box, come out in innovative ways
May not even exist.
We often see problems through the microcosm.
What design thinking does is to look at problems through the telescope,
To see the big picture,
To see how things work from a comprehensive perspective.
We do this by talking to our users, and by sympathizing with them,
And understanding their problems, and the definition of these problems to them,
Then devise solutions that we can test and validate.
My family and I moved from India to South (California) in 2003.
My mother, a nurse, got a job at the Sentinella Hospital in Englewood.
During those few weeks, we stayed in a hotel near the hospital.
At first, we did not have a car.
To where we went we had to walk or take a bus.
I remember walking with my father in the neighborhood,
And you know what? There was one thing we stopped.
There were not a lot of grocery stores nearby.
Here we are in beautiful California (Southern California)
Where many people live,
We find it difficult to get bananas, apples and tomatoes.
Currently, I live in a city called Torrance.
It is 20 minutes away,
They are amazing,
But where I live there are two grocery stores down the street.
In a two mile radius, we have nine grocery stores.
This is not the case in Los Angeles.
In the south of Los Angeles, many of them are described as food deserters.
The federal government, known as the Sahara Food District
Where fresh fruits and vegetables can not be easily obtained for people to buy,
Simply because of the lack of grocery stores and farmer markets.
For some people living in South (Los Angeles),
Really hard to get a fresh product,
Here are some reasons:
The first reason, there are many liquor stores,
Fast food in every corner,
But grocery stores in contrast, a few and far.
The second reason, the lack of reliable means of transport
Getting a grocery store more often is a problem
The third reason, some well-known grocery delivery services
Not available in parts of South (Los Angeles).
Even if people are willing to pay the premium,
It is simply not available for people to use.
About six weeks ago, I participated in the Hakathon.
You may wonder, what is the haccathon?
Hackathon is a challenge design or technology,
Where people gather to solve real problems in their communities.
When we introduced them to some of the problems faced by South (Los Angeles),
Access to food was outstanding for us.
Although I have seen it for only a few weeks,
His impact remained with me, and was never forgotten.
The Community Health Council, a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles,
Issued a report a few years ago,
He talks about food deserts in the south (Los Angeles).
They also reported that South (Los Angeles)
It has one of the highest rates of diet-related issues,
This is a problem that I and my group wanted to solve.
What we got was a production truck.
Truck production such as food truck,
But instead of producing tacos, sandwiches,
You will sell fresh fruits and vegetables.
During the day you go to pick up products
Publishing their websites and social media on that day,
By working with a few central sites in every few areas,
By working in the evening when people come home from work,
They will be able to cover a large area of land, a lot of people.
A few weeks after our competition,
I was working on some research and found out that there was someone who already beat our idea.
There is a group of people in Boston,
Solve the exact same problem in their societies
Which are considered desert food.
They sell and produce fresh fruit through different neighborhoods,
During this summer alone, they have sold 4,000 pounds of production.
We know that the idea works, because it got in (Boston).
And that it was not necessary to live in these difficult areas
To sympathize with these problems that people face.
But requires the participation of people from different walks of life;
Designers, donors and developers, each of us to come to cooperate,
We use design thinking to solve this big problem
Which our society suffers today.
Design thinking is the solution,
Because traditional methods of doing things do not work.
