Centuries ago, a unique person lived.
We reap the fruits of his creations whenever we use scissors,
When you show courage in paragliding,
Even when we cross a bridge in its design.
There is an automatic surgeon of the same name, perhaps to honor
His experience in both psychology and his engineering skills.
We draw inspiration from his legacy when we glimpse a war vehicle in a film,
Or try to read something written in reverse,
Especially when we contemplate some of the greatest drawings over the ages.
His name was Leonardo da Vinci.
He is the person the world sees
A symbol of the Renaissance then.
Now contrary to popular belief, Da Vinci did not receive special training to become
A professional painter, or even a scientist in this field.
In fact, he received basic literacy
He had skills from his work with metals and carpentry,
Finish drawing with pen and brushing.
So far this is a unique background that enabled him to build a link
Between arts and sciences.
This bridge is aptly summarized, I think, with an explanation –
The illustration of the man of the virtuoso.
Painted on the manuscript of the skin, this diagram represents
The real essence of the Renaissance:
Represents a combination of anatomical precision,
Mathematical symmetry,
And technical performance–
Science and art, analysis and intuition–
A symbol of thinking beyond the limits of specialization,
Using what he learned in an area and applied in another field,
Something called “multidisciplinary creativity”.
Now, I stumbled into the concept of “multidisciplinary creativity”
For the first time during the first year of secondary school.
I was reading a scientific article on thermal electricity.
For someone who grew up visiting the Great Collie Dam,
I listen to lectures on the power grid,
And a fuse in the solar panels –
(Laughter)
I was amazed because I did not see, or at the very least,
Or I hear about this technology before in my daily life.
For those who do not know, thermal electricity is a basic way
To generate electricity from heat without the use of moving tools.
So imagine that you put one of these devices inside your electric lamp
And operate it without using anything other than the heat generated from your hand.
We have to see these things everywhere, right?
But we do not see it.
This stimulated me to explore more.
I found a lot of this because the materials used in thermal electricity
Simply too expensive,
They consist of toxic elements,
Or that they are not sufficiently robust to be applied outside the laboratory.
After communicating with thermal electricity experts starting from foreign universities
The end of the emerging energy companies, realized that there is a break between
Research on materials to be installed in a more efficient manner
As far as possible, and among engineers who are trying to apply them commercially.
Thus avoiding division and cooperation
Professionals who went through the same frustrations
About this interruption,
I had a lot of luck doing my research on saving
Model of thermal power more efficient and inexpensive.
May allow us to set new articles on which it worked
From charging the phone using the resulting heat from the vehicle exhaust pipe.
Or get energy from a nearby plant chimney that uses coal to generate power.
But the most important thing I discovered
During this process as a whole this project was not to become possible
If I did not take into account both material science
Behind high performance vehicles and engineering principles
Which determine their portability.
As I was 15 years old, I thought that
Specialization equals success, this was a surprise to me.
But that is what has motivated me more towards the world of scientific research.
In the second year the principle of “Renaissance style”
little more.
While I was talking to biomedical students about septicemia, which is a critical condition
Caused by a bacterial infection, I was amazed to learn that
The poison produced by half the bacterial species was first discovered
Through the use of chemicals derived from the blood of lobster.
The first thing I thought of was, “Poor this crab!”
(Laughter)
But then something else happened to me.
Something else I’ve recently read about is “chemical compounds.”
For many centuries, scientists have sought towards
Finding a new way to identify molecules,
Sealed chemical compound.
You may imagine these structures as plastic antibodies formed around
Some template can be linked to its target such as lock and key.
So I wondered what if these chemical compounds could be used to bind to the toxin
Reveal it and put an end to its activity?
So I began my journey, tying chemistry and biology,
Diagnosis and treatment,
To develop, create and test solutions
Which may allow us days of reduced poisoning.
Now, over the past two years has led the application of this principle
In my search to find places ranging from
Intel International Engineering and Science Fair,
To the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
But I want to say that I would not have done it without inspiration
Stemming from the experiences of scientists of the past and present.
The concept of multidisciplinary creativity is certainly not a new concept.
It is a practice found in all research institutes around the world,
Whether it is a computer science specialist working on the design of new algorithms
To predict how protein is folded, to a mechanical engineer using cellulose
To produce more powerful conveyor materials.
These are links across specialization
Which gave us the wealth of new solutions
Which lie in intersections in current science.
But I ask: Why is the motivation of thinking limited by specialization
Between laboratory walls only?
We all have the luster of expanding fields in the Renaissance.
In the end, I’m sure you’re at some point in your childhood
I received a shocking news that you would not be a singing star and a cowboy,
And a technology entrepreneur at the same time.
(Laughter)
And while I can not say that the Renaissance will allow you
By achieving old dreams at the age of five, you will improve your ability to deal with
Problems from a more singular and comprehensive perspective.
It begins to summon the courage to pursue the non-related concerns.
Society sometimes tells us that one specialty in life must be focused.
But it is the ability to identify this social habit that drives inventors away.
For example, (Noam Chomsky), a broad-minded person in our present world.
He discovered a student’s interest in both linguistics and logic.
So far, he has not been deterred by his pursuit of two areas seen by people
Not very popular, simply because they were both his passion.
Today, he is considered one of the most prominent people in the arts
Humanities and publishing several pioneering papers
In mathematical linguistics that contributed to everything
From social media to psychology.
But there is no purpose in pursuing these concerns if we do not explore more
And maintain them over time.
The goal is not to become “engaged in any workmanship and do not know any of them,”
But rather that the evolution of your experience in the field is not limited to
Only one topic.
Manjul Bargava explained this principle,
He is a mathematician with a unique background.
From his youth, he was familiar with Sanskrit texts
And learned how to play drums from distinguished professors.
But he had a passion for mathematics,
He completed his studies in mathematics and computer science at the high school at the age of 14 years.
To today the drum is playing constantly
While studying as a university professor at Princeton University.
His excellence led him through music and mathematics
To tremendous progress in number theory.
What’s more, creativity shows its effect if you apply what you have learned
In one specialty and transferred it to another.
The best way to do that is by learning skills, not specialization.
In this way, do not restrict yourself to one style of thinking
Instead, they are equipped with tools that can be applied in countless ways.
Perhaps most of his reputation in this matter is Steve Jobs.
As the story goes, he left Reid University at the age of 19
And decided to join the art of calligraphy for his pure curiosity.
Which he learned from this practice of art dating back more than 2,600 years
He renewed the way he designed the Mac interface, with many aesthetics
Of lines that are proportionately spaced.
Today, it’s almost scary to think about how our screens might look
Without many lines.
So to sum up, the courage to pursue passion,
And to maintain more exploration in it,
And the coherent application initiative:
These are the characteristics that identify these three entrepreneurs
For the modern Renaissance and countless others,
Some of them may be sitting among us today.
But you may still think, “That did not matter to me
Or for people around me to follow a course that was in the past? “
To answer this question, it is important to talk
About our ancient cultural heritage.
For nearly four or five centuries ago, society considered it acceptable –
I reached the point of honoring –
To seek pluralism in specialization.
To be a Renaissance woman or man, to experience the education outside your country,
Offering competitive in various fields
It was the best way for citizens at this time.
Over time, through the 21st century,
Specialization has become the most important thing in life.
As individuals seek a deeper understanding of their field of study,
Some became experts but with a narrow horizon
And a limited perspective on the specialties of others.
But we find that history repeats itself,
In this case, it may be necessary to return history.
“We are now preparing students to receive their jobs that have not yet been found …
Technology users have not yet invented …
And solve problems we do not know exist. “
This is a quote from Carl Fish and Scott McCloud,
Two high school technology teachers.
This task, as much as it appeals, seems possible when we motivate students
To cross between the different materials they learn
Building a link between them.
Imagine a class where students are allowed to delve into history
About the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and also learning physics
Which explains why he did not fall to the ground.
Or winter art project facility explained –
The winter art project for making ice chips, built-in
Explain the geometry of fractions and computational patterns
Which we find in nature.
But this is not enough to simply encourage students
To pursue interests in multiple disciplines.
In fact, this is possible when we allow the symbols
Who these students learn and are looking to be like them,
By instilling the rich experiences that constitute these linkages
To turn them into tasks at hand.
This means living in a world where a master architect has long-term passion
For gardening, able to show the love of nature in action,
Design an environment-friendly building inspired by plants.
Or even cultured love of books happens to be specialized in information technology,
She appreciates the use of her experience in eloquence
To compose error messages that are not harmful to the user.
(Laughter)
We are moving towards an intellectually advanced future
Where solutions are not limited to one specialty.
While doing so it is important to keep in mind that the principles
The Davinci and Renaissance are still with us no matter how
Its dramatic change in appearance over the past two centuries.
(Laughter)
This automated man is the product of technological progress
Which we have achieved since then,
However, it retains human structure and anatomy.
Represents the evolution of creativity.
But what drives me more about this development is a fact
Many of these creations are centered on the confluence of knowledge
Which we already own.
“I was impressed by the urgency of working,” Da Vinci once said.
Knowledge is not enough; we must apply it.
It is not enough that we want to work; we have to implement. “
thank you.
(clap)
