opportunity to catch it sooner if we can
opportunity to catch it sooner if we can identify those symptoms early and move
identify those symptoms early and move
identify those symptoms early and move people into treatment let me show you a
people into treatment let me show you a
people into treatment let me show you a diagram that spells this out in a little
diagram that spells this out in a little
diagram that spells this out in a little bit more detail the three phases this
bit more detail the three phases this
bit more detail the three phases this gets ofrenda the first is a premorbid
gets ofrenda the first is a premorbid
gets ofrenda the first is a premorbid phase this is a very very early and very
phase this is a very very early and very
phase this is a very very early and very subtle subtle Fage phase it’s important
subtle subtle Fage phase it’s important
subtle subtle Fage phase it’s important to know that schizophrenia strikes
to know that schizophrenia strikes
to know that schizophrenia strikes between the ages of 15 and 25 rare’s
between the ages of 15 and 25 rare’s
between the ages of 15 and 25 rare’s does it exist in childhood and rare does
does it exist in childhood and rare does
does it exist in childhood and rare does it exist in later old or starting later
it exist in later old or starting later
it exist in later old or starting later old adulthood in this premorbid stage it
old adulthood in this premorbid stage it
old adulthood in this premorbid stage it again symptoms are so subtle it may look
again symptoms are so subtle it may look
again symptoms are so subtle it may look like concentration problems maybe a
like concentration problems maybe a
like concentration problems maybe a little bit of depression we can’t catch
little bit of depression we can’t catch
little bit of depression we can’t catch it here we don’t have the science the
it here we don’t have the science the
it here we don’t have the science the next phase of schizophrenia is the
next phase of schizophrenia is the
next phase of schizophrenia is the at-risk phase this is where we can
at-risk phase this is where we can
at-risk phase this is where we can actually capture schizophrenia it’s in
actually capture schizophrenia it’s in
actually capture schizophrenia it’s in this phase where the individual’s
this phase where the individual’s
this phase where the individual’s functioning starts to decrease
functioning starts to decrease
functioning starts to decrease significantly
significantly
significantly that’s that line right there and they’re
that’s that line right there and they’re
that’s that line right there and they’re experiencing mild but not fully
experiencing mild but not fully
experiencing mild but not fully psychotic symptoms now the definition of
psychotic symptoms now the definition of
psychotic symptoms now the definition of psychotic is that the person can no
psychotic is that the person can no
psychotic is that the person can no longer tell the difference between what
longer tell the difference between what
longer tell the difference between what is real and what is not the next stage
is real and what is not the next stage
is real and what is not the next stage is the active stage that is the stage
is the active stage that is the stage
is the active stage that is the stage where the individual then loses touch
where the individual then loses touch
where the individual then loses touch with reality I refer to this stage as
with reality I refer to this stage as
with reality I refer to this stage as the stage where the illness now owns the
the stage where the illness now owns the
the stage where the illness now owns the person and subsequently it owns all of
person and subsequently it owns all of
person and subsequently it owns all of us because of the amazing cost that we
us because of the amazing cost that we
us because of the amazing cost that we end up paying if we can catch it in the
end up paying if we can catch it in the
end up paying if we can catch it in the at-risk phase the person still has the
at-risk phase the person still has the
at-risk phase the person still has the opportunity to own the condition and
opportunity to own the condition and
opportunity to own the condition and give much better outcomes so another
give much better outcomes so another
give much better outcomes so another point I want you to pay attention to
point I want you to pay attention to
point I want you to pay attention to it’s this tiny white line although it
it’s this tiny white line although it
it’s this tiny white line although it looks tiny on my screen it actually
looks tiny on my screen it actually
looks tiny on my screen it actually represents
represents
represents 74 weeks we refer to that time period as
74 weeks we refer to that time period as
74 weeks we refer to that time period as the duration of untreated illness and
the duration of untreated illness and
the duration of untreated illness and that is the point where the individual
that is the point where the individual
that is the point where the individual moves from the at-risk phase where their
moves from the at-risk phase where their
moves from the at-risk phase where their symptoms are subtle and they can still
symptoms are subtle and they can still
symptoms are subtle and they can still control them and they still have insight
control them and they still have insight
control them and they still have insight into them too late active phase so the
into them too late active phase so the
into them too late active phase so the moment they hit the active phase to the
moment they hit the active phase to the
moment they hit the active phase to the moment where they first receive
moment where they first receive
moment where they first receive treatment 74 weeks this white line is

white line the worse the outcomes early
white line the worse the outcomes early identification and intervention is going
identification and intervention is going
identification and intervention is going to be most effective if we can catch in
to be most effective if we can catch in
to be most effective if we can catch in the at-risk phase or the early active
