Até onde controlamos a tecnologia? Ela irá nos controlar? | Solange Rezende | TEDxRioVermelho

Even though we do not know how we humans,

we are able to perceive,

to understand and to make decisions,

we are already looking for the development

of intelligent systems and devices.

It already exists.

This is already a reality.

And artificial intelligence is the area of computing

that works with research and development

of intelligent systems.

And today, I’m going to talk to you about this topic,

quite intriguing, up to,

and controversial in some cases.

But will one day we will be dominated

by artificial intelligence?

Who of you watched the 2016 Oscar winners?

Ex Machina displays an electronic mechanism

who uses an artificial intelligence

similar to the intelligence of humans.

How does this work?

Does this change the way we perceive the world?

Does this change human relationships?

How much of it will be fiction, yet?

But artificial intelligence is already a reality.

It is already available in visible and invisible systems.

For example, a stand-alone car.

You know that in 2014, in the state of Bahia,

there were more than 2,500 deaths

in traffic accidents?

And that, according to research, most of them happened

by their drivers’ recklessness?

This is Google’s car, which you enter, push a button,

and tells you where you want to go.

Have you ever wondered how much this can change

the way we work,

the way we relate?

I can use, for example, this car, as an extension of my office.

How many hours do you spend per week driving?

Have you ever imagined getting into a car like this one this morning,

make a connection with you,

reflect,

and arrive at work quiet, light

and have a great day at work?

But that’s quite controversial, is not it?

Because, imagine the following:

the taxi drivers, who have already created a great

due to the use of an application such as Uber,

imagine how it will be, if at some point,

which will not be long,

they lose their own jobs

for freelance cars?

But this reality already exists in Brazil.

It’s not just Google.

In Brazilian agriculture, this car,

which is driven without a driver,

is used for the spraying of pesticides.

Smart systems are also in many other devices,

as in medicine.

This is a robot surgeon.

In Brazil, in São Paulo, we already have a hybrid operating room

for cardiac surgeries,

where part of the surgery is done by a robot

and the other part by medical specialists.

And these systems are in many other places.

On the other hand, you have already made some purchases

What was suggested by a system?

Did you like the result?

Have you received a suggestion from Facebook and liked that suggestion?

How does this happen?

Did you tell him how to do it?

Or has the system automatically discovered

your behavior, your profile?

In this line, we know a very interesting case,

which is Tay.ai, which is a “bot” of Twitter,

who intended to learn to talk with the young.

With less than 24 hours of its launch,

it had to be taken off the air.

And he was removed from the air for presenting inappropriate behavior:

racist, anti-feminist, among others.

Note the following:

when that account went to air, he could not talk.

He learned these inappropriate behaviors

with the young people who talked with him.

In less than 24 hours!

Look at the speed of learning!

How much does a child spend like that from the beginning to learn?

With this, the machine today is the worker.

Changed.

In the past, the worker used the machine as a tool.

Today she is the worker herself.

But then, you may ask me:

Solange, but what about the jobs, how are they going to stay?

Well, in Japan, in the middle of the last century,

they imported workers.

Today they export technology.

What happened over there?

But how far does the limit go

of artificial intelligence?

With this evolution, what do we expect?

We can use a hammer to commit murder.

But we can use the same hammer in building a house.

We can command a drone.

who goes to a life that is in danger, on the high seas, and saves that life.

But this same drone can be driven

to make a great massacre.

We can use artificial intelligence

to learn and recommend a purchase,

just as we can use that same intelligence

to spy on our data on the internet.

Technology is in the hands of men.

It’s up to each of us to decide what to do with it.

Thank you to TEDx for allowing me this connection with you

and with Salvador.

(Applause)
