Amjad Kharwat “The Symphony of Science” TEDxMisrata 2017 | Amjad Kharwat | TEDxMisrata

Translator: Imed Boumaraf Checker: Riyad Almubarak

This was a question I had posed to my friends one time and we were discussing

Their response was as expected.

Let us know from the flag and the headache, O Amjad, let’s finish the school!

I told them: Why science is interesting and important.

Look at me with the view that if you do not shut up we will go and leave you

And then returned to their discussion about the ball players and their latest transfers.

Later I reopened the subject of science again

But in a different way this time

Someone grabbed them and was a little fanatic and asked him to take a breath

He said to me: What? I told him again take a breath

Once he inhaled this air, I began to talk

I said to him, my friend, if we thought

(Ie how much lung can carry from air)

And the molar volume of gas, we will find that at the moment

At least 3 * 10 ^ 23 of the gas molecules were inhaled

3, followed by 23 0

He said to me: “Well and what?”

I said to him: “This means that these particles have been distributed almost all over the globe”

Once I told him that there is a possibility that one of these molecules

She has been in a lung for Muradona and is doing in the pimp movement

All the attention of the boy became with me and left the rest of the friends and began asking how and why

Just that he had created this curiosity I began to deepen his scientific questions more and began to hear from me

And even returned to the subject of the importance of science, which did not accept at the outset.

The thing I discovered for her moment is that people do not hate science

But hate the way in which science is delivered

Because science is basically based on curiosity which is part of human nature

When we were children we were all trying out and exploring and asking questions like why the sky is blue

And why the moon follows us.

We were very curious about such questions.

So the problem is not in science itself, it is boring or complex, no,

The problem is how we connect science to people

I believe science like music no matter how good authorship is possible to be annoying

If not properly played

And by the way I mean it

This is what I have been trying to do recently, a job that has consumed my time recently

Connecting science, simplistic and playing on the tendon of curiosity.

But this was not always the case, for years I was passionate about science

But unable to connect it to anyone.

Just like the passion for music but unable to play it.

This Facebook reminded me of those days 5 years ago

And from then on I am working on developing myself

I remember at the beginning of my passion for knowledge that I was stolen in my father’s phone 81

I open Wikipedia and save scientific articles as saved pages and every time I read an article

Offline.

I also remember that I saw many scientific documents, and the more I knew about them

New I share it with people,

I remember the time when I knew the fact that when we see the stars at night we actually see

The past of these stars and not their current status

Because it is so far that the light needs a period to get us, I left no one did not tell him,

I was very excited about it.

But it was rather painful that you did not find the same enthusiasm from the other side

So I was surprised why there was no interest in science and scientific research

And not just because it’s my passion only

But because I was aware that it was necessary to solve the problems that confront us in society

Such as the problem of electricity we suffer daily

If we were interested in the science of renewable energies, it would not have been like this!

Science has the most powerful methodology to solve problems

A quick look around you and you will find that every little and big in our lives from lighting to the microphone

To air conditioning

All inventions came by scientists to solve a certain problem, so why not give it more attention !?

This has been a concern for me since I was young

I was trying to convince myself that my interest in my studies was the most I could do

But it turned out later that I could do more

One time during my junior high school science lesson I learned about electrical charges

The teacher explained how the similar charges are repulsive and the different chargers are attracted

I asked her why?

She said to me because they are similar and because they are different

I was not convinced and I was kind of a lot question

She told me what you think you should take as homework

I went home, I said well

And you open the Internet, I wrote the question, different shipments are pulling, why?

I did not find any result of what I wanted

And not only with this question, I tried to search for many questions

Which I found and found no result of what I wanted.

I think I’m not the only one who has faced this problem

Come to look for information about the stars, to find yourself in the forums Koura,

Messi star shine

Means the search results for art stars and korea were more than results for real stars.

After a while I discovered that this is a big problem in itself, and its name is “problem of Arabic content online”

According to statistics of the International Telecommunication Union by 2012

Only 3%

Full content of all types and details

So what about scientific content?

The results may be so small that they are virtually nonexistent

Then I realized that the real problem is “the problem of Arab content”

Means 400 million Arabic speakers compared to 3% none

We do not produce anything!

Even if there are scientific topics are often repeated and without sources.

But with the beginning of my entry into the Facebook world with the year 2012-2013

I discovered a number of initiated initiatives already working to solve this problem

It was a kind of down payment to me, and I said to myself why do not I contribute to being part

Of solving the problem of Arabic content

I said maybe this is the thing I can do but my interest in my studies

Hence the beginning of the Libyan Science Club in 2014

A scientific initiative aimed at simplifying science, spreading scientific culture and enriching Arabic content

But as the beginning of any project I found myself facing a lot of difficulties

Without the Internet and electricity, because our work was electronic and depended on them

There were other difficulties such as translation, design, checking, and so on

At first I started on my own and tried to translate some information

With that my language was simple, but I worked to upgrade my English, to reach the goal

Which I set for myself,

I also tried to learn photoshop to create illustrations that attract people to the field of science

But then I found that on my own I could not be a contributor to solving the problem dramatically

So you have to make a team, but how do I make a team?

I joined a similar Arab group and learned a little from them

I worked with them as a designer, that is after learning the photoshop well I joined them as a designer,

I learned from them a bit of management

How they have laws to organize themselves.

I also read a few books on the management of organizations.

But there is still a problem between me and the composition of the team has been age

At the time I was about 16 years old

I was afraid that if someone knew my age, he might not feel that the project was serious,

Or does not join, and there will be no output

What should I do?

I found a way

I created a different Facebook account that I did to hide the age and put the picture of Einstein as a personal picture

Just applied this idea, started a lot to join us, and reached the team for about

30 volunteers

Some of them even called me Professor Amjad and Sayyed Amjad

Thus, I spent about a year and a half in this hidden situation,

We translate and produce articles

Until I felt that all the foundations of the project were in place and everything in place, revealed my true personality

Of course the reaction of the team with me was, they laughed and took it sportily

But then they forgave me because they were convinced that it was necessary for the success of the project

Today the Libyan Science Club has more than 2000 articles on Facebook

In various fields of science from physics, chemistry, biology, medicine and engineering,

Today we have a website that is the first of its kind in Libya, interested and specialized in science,

Always with evidence and source.

(clap)

There are more than 500 articles translated,

We have also been able to collaborate with other active scientific initiatives on the electronic field

And we have been with them not only to transfer information, but also transferred the way of scientific thinking,

Critical thinking, objectively, evidence and source

And this I’m sure the more they spread out, the more we change for the better

Last year, we also cooperated with the Association for Astronomy Fans and a number of organizations

To be founded for the first scientific festival to be held in Libya,

Which was the 2016 Thuraya Festival

(clap)

Today I do not feel as uncomfortable as before

Because I contributed to the interest in science in our country

I contributed to the fact that there was a community that I wanted to see

When I share the information I get the same reaction

Today I met hundreds of people who have the same passion and faith in the cause of science

I was recently able to have a conversation with one of the great science symphony musicians

Who I watched them on documentaries

An astrophysicist at NASA, Dr. Michael Thaler

I asked her about the binary stars and was very pleased with her detailed response that began with a sentence

“This is a great question”

(clap)

But with all this it is necessary to do more to support the march of science in our country

Personally, I do not want to spend my entire life practicing the Internet and behind the screens

I want to see the flag on the ground I want to see research centers

And that Libya is one of the countries competing for scientific progress

I want to see scientific festivals, astronomical constellations and scientific journals like sports and art magazines

Why do not they exist everywhere?

I am sure that this thing would be applicable if we worked together to make the symphony a science for all

We saw a lack of it as an opportunity for another musician to be more and more vocal.

Then, even the question I asked at the beginning: “What does science mean to you?” We will not have to ask him

Because everyone will be aware

That science is passion and beauty

That science is strength and progress

That science is a way of thinking and good for change.

thanks thanks very much
