OSHO: I Wonder If This Could Be Love?

OSHO

OSHO International Foundation presents:

Osho: I wonder if this is love?

Excerpts from an interview by Mike Wolfe of KBND Radio, Bend, Oregon

My name is Mike Wolfe;

a bit of background from me:

I am in the radio and television world,

in Washington DC, Denver, Colorado –

so I have traveled a bit,

tired of big cities,

and so came to central Oregon.

What I see is, simply put,

that you have something to say,

what a lot of people do not accept at the moment,

you may not care about.

Why do not you care about it?

Why would I care about it?

But why would not you care about it? … and we can

to continue playing endless monopoly.

No.

You say that you are interested in the individual.

Is it only the individual who is here?

No, the individual is everywhere,

whether he is here or not,

because only the individual exists. Companies are just names,

groups are just names.

In reality, only the individual exists.

And I do my best,

sitting in my room.

That’s why you see –

in all newspapers, on the radio,

on the television —

a man who does not come out of this little valley.

And from here I will continue to hammer on the whole world.

What is the point of traveling?

Well, let me ask you this:

You do not go out of this valley, but

Is it not true that you have a couple of weeks ago, three nights in Bend

at the Riverhouse Motel?

No.

Then someone will do you the highest

compliment, because there is a doppelganger of yours.

Hmm!

I wonder if it is possible

that what you say –

and to come back to it more seriously –

to project on those who do not understand anything at all.

First, the not serious part:

Do not try to make a bigger joke than I do.

I was not

at the hotel, but I can go there.

Well, you could probably buy the hotel if you want.

In fact, I …

and I have everything any hotel in America can have.

You should see my bathroom,

it is perhaps the most beautiful in the whole world.

Your bathroom?

My bathroom.

Is that an invitation?

Yes.

I have never been invited to a bathroom before.

I was told earlier that I belong in the bathroom,

but never to an invited.

I am a rare and unique person in many ways:

I invite you in my bathroom!

That is unique.

But what happens after that?

You do not have to go anywhere.

Enjoy the jacuzzi,

enjoy the shower,

enjoy

from the hot shower,

enjoy the ice-cold shower.

And then make that you come away … I understand!

I need to know this for my own moral confidence:

Have you ever invited a member of the press into your bathroom before?

No…

Thank you. I think that’s important.

… because I’ve never liked a man before

as I like you.

I wonder if this is love?

Is everything alright!

Being invited into the bathroom ….

Well, I’m sure that the listeners of this program will think

that you and I are going to start a nightclub number.

What are the possibilities – since you spoke about it a moment ago

bringing together Western philosophy, which is somewhat materialistic,

and Eastern philosophy, which is traditionally not materialistic

but more an inner –

how could one say – an inner recognition of himself?

You have done a great job in many ways now –

that diamond watch is of course no

oriental philosophy –

yet the rest of your presentation is somewhat oriental.

Is it possible that these two cultures fuse together?

I’m working on that.

And that is why both sides are

of culture

mad at me.

Easterners are angry with me

because his thinking that I am a materialist.

And are they right?

No.

You are not a materialist?

No, not as they see it.

And the westerners –

especially the materialist, the communist –

are angry with me

because I bring spirituality.

My approach is that both are together.

This existence is not divided into matter and spirituality.

This existence is an organic unit,

just as your soul and your body are an organic unity.

Your soul can not exist without your body,

and your body can not live without a soul.

I am destroying the whole idea of that dichotomy,

of a separation between matter and spirit,

body and soul,

materialism and spirituality.

I call myself Zorba the Buddha.

My restaurants, mine

discos are all named after me: Zorba the Buddha.

Now the Buddhists are angry.

The ambassador in America from Sri Lanka has written me a letter,

where he says:

“People are angry about my country.

Please do not use Buddha’s name with Zorba. “

I answered him: “We do not mean your Buddha;

your Buddha’s name was Gautama Siddhartha.

Buddha is not just anyone’s name,

it is a quality. It means: The Illuminated.

It can be used for anyone who is enlightened.

Do not worry about it. “

It is my whole effort that Zorba and Buddha are bridged.

Zorba represents materialistic life

with all its wealth –

hence this diamond watch,

hence all my Rolls Royces.

I live the most luxurious life that any human being has ever lived,

without worries.

There are people with a lot more money – I do not have a single cent –

but they can not live such a luxurious life as I do,

without worries,

no bank account, no income tax …

and have everything that someone can have!

What is your secret?

I really think you are in the wrong business.

I mean…

because what you have just shown,

then you must, as it looks, be one of the world’s greatest scammers.

Am I!

And a big man for that to admit.

Certainly!
