What’s the difference between American & British English? πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Hello! Emma from MMM!

My student is always asking me:

What is the difference?

British English and American English?

Which is the best?

No one will i learn?

It’s really confusing!

In my last lesson, I talked about any kind of English

You should learn.

You can see it right here if it is right.

But in this lesson

We are going to look at the main difference

Standard in British English

And standard American English

Although it is wrong to say that English is a kind of thing

Better than the other

Or that is more accurate than the other,

It is important to be aware of differences

In British and American English

And focus the most on English

Relevant for you

And that’s what all of this lesson is about

In the main areas that you’ll notice the difference between

Is British and American English

Accents, obviously, spelling, vocabulary

And in some areas of grammar with use

Use of additions and collective nouns.

Now if you are studying for an English exam,

For the University of English or studying

Or use professional English for your career

Then this lesson is especially important for you!

Usually in all these circumstances,

You have to pay attention to spelling and grammar rules

Because it can affect your score or even your reputation.

Okay so let’s talk about some of these differences.

Start with accent

This is probably the most obvious difference.

But the difference is not as easy as the British

And the American accent, right?

Regional accent

Both countries can dramatically distinguish between

Some from South London think very different

Without anyone from Scotland

And both are very different words from the queen of England.

And it’s the same in America,

The accent may vary significantly

Depending on where you are in the country.

That said, we compare compared to standard British English

And Standard American English Leaks,

There are some clear differences.

There are differences between the way

That voice is pronounced.

Hot

Hot

OK so we have to say hot. Hot

Ant

We call the ants

Ant Ant

Vacation Vacation Vacation

Vacation

Americans tend to pronounce flap T

When the letter is in the words of two voices

Like these words

Slippers are a feeling sound

That’s actually more sound like a d.

Water Water

Bottle Bottle

A little A little

Daughter. Daughter.

Hear that flap t

It is very good as very common as my Australian accent.

Standard American English clearly declares

After a vowel sound

Where most British English speakers are not.

So for example,

Car, car

Burgers, burgers

And I’m just talking burgers

Daughter, daughter

You can see some examples of them

Here is the video here.

Exact one difference is just so right.

But there are some more frustrating differences

That can actually get you into trouble, like spellings.

Americans make English words differently

We have left

Actually that you can think of anything

American spelling is easy

It was changed only a few hundred years ago

From British way to a new American English way

And the reason was to make the sound

See more acoustics

So the words are actually spelled more as they make sounds.

Does it possess many feelings?

The last word in English in English

So think about the words

Color, honor, neighbor

They just end up in American English.

One of the British English works is at the end of L.

After a short vowel sound

When there is a double l is added or added.

Travel or modeling for example

But there is only one in American English

Jewelry This is another example

Although there was more change in the making of jewelry

More phonetic

The English word is ending in English

Last in-in American English

Organize, like guesses

The last words in English in English

Most of the time, English is finished in English.

Like the center of the word

English end of error in English

Intermediate End in American English

Like defense and license

You’ll find some small differences with past forms

Regular Actions

So learned the past tense of learning English English

But learned or learned in British English is possible.

Although the incoming form of i-mail is more common,

Notice, the pronunciation is the same.

The same rules apply for dreams and fires.

As an additional hint, make sure that you are using a spelling tool

That type of writing for English is typed,

So that it corrects your spelling

With the right type English

Vocabulary

The most frustrating difference between

British and American English vocabulary certainly

– Even for the local speakers!

There are hundreds of words per day

That’s just different

And to make matters worse, Australian English

Canadian English, New Zealander English

South African English,

Can use different words for the same thing.

Especially the differences between nouns are really obvious

Especially food, where each type is English

There are several nouns of the same thing

So for example the Horse lours

Killionaire is called in America, nothing is the same!

And just like there are heaps of difference like that.

I made a whole video about it right here

Vocabulary is some of these differences

Even even native English speakers

Try and understand very much

We do not always know exactly

What is any other English speaker talking about?

Because we use different words for the same thing

In that situation,

We usually try to use the context of sentence

To understand what this new word is

And if we still do not know, we just have to ask.

If you know what kind of English you need,

Then I highly recommend it

Finding a local English teacher

Those who can help you learn and understand

The English vocabulary used in that place.

Cambly is really a great place for you to do it

Because they got the native English teacher from them

All English speaking countries

So if you are traveling to Canada,

You can find a Canadian teacher to help you

If you’re applying for a university in the United Kingdom,

Then find a teacher using accent, vocabulary

And spelling rules

That’s your test you really get great results.

It just makes it so easy for you

Once you reach out once again

And you can try a free 15 minute text with Cambly

The link below uses the link on this video.

I’ve chatted with a few different teachers there

And they’ve been super friendly and helpful

So I really recommend it!

Now, the simulations are quite confusing

Sometimes that’s telling you

American and British English

Use differently.

But do not worry.

Most of them are exactly the same

But there are some things that you have to be aware of

Because they are used differently

“What are you doing on weekends”

American English is common

When “what are you doing over the weekend”

More commonly used in the UK.

In Australia we mostly use ‘on’.

When talking about a specific week of a week,

‘Through’ is really common in American English

My brother works through Friday Friday

Although ‘to’ in British English is more common

And also in Australian English.

My brother works from Monday to Friday.

This means exactly the same thing.

The good news is that local English speakers

You must understand no matter what

Any one you choose

So it’s not a big issue,

It’s just something you need to be aware of.

There are a couple of small differences between grammar

In American and British English

You’ve probably already been confused at some point in time

By ‘get’ past participle form

Did I get or did I get it?

And it’s the only difference between a difference

British and American English

When describing something that happened recently

That affects the current moment,

I would probably probably use the perfect current.

But my American friends will probably use it

Instead of the simple period of the past.

So let’s explain with an example.

If I just eat a big meal and someone asked

If I want to dessert,

I say, “No thanks, I have eaten a lot!”

But an American would probably choose the easiest past

And just say “no thanks, I ate a lot!”

Someone might say that British English probably will be

In this situation, choose to use the current perfect term

Joint numbers, whose names are mentioned

A group thing

Students are called a class like a group

Or a group of co-workers working in the same project

A team

Or a group of cows called a cow.

A family, an audience, a crowd.

All examples of this joint knowledge are:

And British English and American English treat these nouns

English sentences differ differently

In American English, the collective names are singular

So they are treated the same as another

Singular nouns are.

The team asked for more organizations.

The band is really good!

After lunch, the class meets in the library.

So though there are many people

That class up, grammatically, they are treated

As a single thing as one

In British English, the collective names may be singular

But they may not be plural.

So one can say using British English

Among these different options

After lunch, the class meets in the library.

So mention the class as a whole.

After lunch or after lunch the class is in the library.

And that means

All individuals are part of that class

The difference is only about the group or group

Being mentioned as complete as a single unit,

Or as a collection of people inside the group.

Then it is considered plural.

The team asked for more organizations.

So that group is one unit.

The team asked for more organizations.

Team as a team of people

And the meaning is identical.

The band is really good.

Or the band is very tired!

The band’s separate members are very tired.

This makes the text feel like it’s like

There are lots of differences between

American and British English

They are really just a small, minor percentage of English.

With grammar and imitation,

The difference is less serious and less obvious

Because people still can understand

Vocabulary and spelling are two main fields

That you need to pay attention

Complete, American English and British English

Most are very similar,

We see each other’s TV shows,

We read each other’s books.

We’re using it.

Really so,

Both types of English are not quite different.
