I would start with a warning,
Because I consider it incredibly important
Through this presentation,
I will talk about personal suffering with mental illness,
Which is complicated by topics including obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression and suicide.
If you feel uncomfortable at any point during this offer,
I welcome and encourage that you leave the room to take some space,
take care for yourself.
My name is Diana Beige,
I am nineteen years old, and I am depressed.
This is fine.
Yes, you have heard me correctly.
Just as a diabetic treats blood glucose control
Eating sugar,
I have to deal with symptoms of depression.
This not only makes you feel more saddened when things get worse.
In fact, it is a feeling of sadness for no reason at all.
Living days when getting up from bed is very difficult
Because I see no reason for him,
Or maybe because I stayed awake all night
I’m thinking of something I should have done but I did not
Because I was tired, because I was very tired all the time,
Or something I could do but I did not
Because I did not feel any incentive to do,
Or that third cake I did not have to eat
Because it has 120 extra calories, an additional twelve minutes on the treadmill
I do not have time for that in my color table,
And how Madi did not respond to my text messages and may not have to email her again
Because she may think I’m annoying and maybe hate me,
I do not know why I should not. I also hate myself most of the time.
But this is depressing.
I’m not depressed, but part of me,
It was also nine years ago, almost half of my life.
It is satisfactory, and it is as painful as any physical illness.
The brain is a member like others.
If you leave anxiety or depression untreated,
Just like leaving any physical dysfunction, such as cholesterol, diabetes,
Will not disappear from itself.
Just as people die from physical illnesses that are not treated,
People also die because of mental illness that is not treated.
Suicide gets when the pain exceeds the endurance.
People do not kill themselves, their disease kills them,
This is difficult to absorb.
People are victims of suicide.
Suicide is what kills them, the disease is what kills them,
These deaths occur more than many realize.
Suicide is the third largest cause of teenage deaths,
And the second among college students,
But it must not take the life of anyone,
40,000 deaths a year in the United States alone,
To clarify the importance of the subject.
We as human beings are built with permanent minds to judge what is going on around them,
That’s fine, it’s normal.
But let me ask you a question:
How many negative words you can think of
Linked to people with mental illness?
“Backward,” “crazy,” “eccentric,” “monstrous”
“Violent,” “spoiled,” and the list goes on.
Now, how negative a negative word you can think of
Linked to people with cancer?
There is no word.
But both are diseases.
So why when you suffer from mental illness
Your thinking is illogical,
But if you suffer from a physical illness, you are venerable, bold and courageous?
Mental illness is the only disease
In which we blame the person who suffers because he is suffering,
This will not change unless we talk about it.
We can not be afraid or ashamed to talk about it
Because one in five people suffers from mental illness.
Common mental illnesses such as brown eyes or silver cars,
They are everywhere.
Not with families or suburbs presumed to be very dangerous.
I grew up in ‘Fairport’, New York.
Population: 5,300.
The outskirts of Rochester I call my house
Mostly inhabited by middle-class white families,
This is a high school formation in Fairport
A total of 1,500 students, mostly middle class whites
With impressive graduation rates,
A large number of students engage in sports activities outside the curriculum
And have academic degrees of excellence.
No one can walk around Fairport High Rooms and think,
“There are students who suffer in this environment.”
What society must realize is that there are adolescents who suffer everywhere,
Even in the most unexpected gatherings.
The first thing I learned was when I founded and headed
School campaign for mental health program
Entitled “True Colors”.
In my senior year in high school, with the help of my friend ‘Matt Kemp’.
The Council of True Colors was composed of two parts:
Activity ‘red line’ cards ‘If you really know me’
The Red Line activity involved students who had crossed the line
When we apply a statement to them.
For example, “skip the line if your parents are divorced.”
But we took these declared declarations beyond the comfort zone
In schools,
Raising themes ranging from self-harm to suicide.
Students can see physical and emotional suffering
For their colleagues during this activity,
And to realize that they are not alone in their situation.
The second activity, ‘If you really know me’,
It was part of the assembly that I called “my child”.
Each student is given a small card
He asks him to write something about himself that no one knows
The cards are written anonymously
Make sure students do not feel restrictions on what can be written.
When I explained, to stimulate activity
I said something I could write on the card.
“If you really know me, you’ll know I’m worried
And physical problems. “
And to try to reduce their chances to take it as a joke.
These are secondary students anyway.
I did not hope or expect most cards to contain secrets
From pain, suffering and mental illness,
But that is exactly what we have received.
These are middle class students, from nearby suburbs
They were writing about suffering, anxiety, depression, and suicide
Physical and emotional abuse, eating disorders,
And many other terrible and painful experiences.
He did not accept to miss the quota
If you are in a health center or in a nurse’s office,
But not in the center of consultation?
Physical health research is not encouraged,
But is your mental health beyond?
When I was in high school, I could go to the nurse’s office
At any time of the day regardless of whether you have a lesson or not.
You can lie on a bed at the corner of the room as you like
If you feel pain in the stomach or head, but if you want to speak with a psychologist
This is by appointment, and only if you do not have a lesson lesson.
That is, “Well, I will reschedule panic
From the third quota to the sixth quota, no problem here,
How do we repair this damaged health system?
I have pencil heads for adults who want to help teenagers
And adolescents to help themselves.
For adults: start from the normalization of mental illness,
Be aware that it exists and how much it is really common.
Many occupations including education,
They need something like CPR training, which is important, do not misunderstand me.
But how many professions do you need to train on the ABCs?
One out of every five people is constantly suffering from mental illness
How many times do you need help one cant breathe?
Educate yourself even if your business does not require this.
Pay attention to the warnings – I mentioned one at the start of this show.
How much do you need? Thirty seconds?
Thirty seconds to make sure the audience knows
What are the high-risk issues to be discussed
And to know that you care about their personal quality of life.
For some reason, it has become controversial
Take steps to prevent the presence of a potentially tragic reaction
In the middle of the show, but this is another matter for discussion later.
It’s thirty seconds, take your time.
To speak as a teenager, I know how we can become anxious and sensitive
Towards what adults should tell us, especially if we do not agree.
When it comes to mental health, do not act like you know everything.
You may have read every book in the public library
To help you better understand your son’s depression,
But that does not make you an experienced psychologist.
If you are a teenager asking for support,
That’s exactly what they want: support, not answers.
If, listen,
Show yourself as a person that a teenager can speak to.
You are trustworthy and your door is always open.
He said this, make him known, and continued through him,
Sometimes, all they need is to listen to them
Sometimes, listening is not enough,
The steps you take after listening are sensitive.
They can be talked about as suggestions or a way to help,
Forcing a teenager to go to a counseling center,
Or talk to his parents, or go to a resident or outpatient clinic
Can appear as a serious threat.
I know that these sources are supposed to be useful,
But convince a struggling teenager or someone of any age, to get help
Are the most difficult stages of treatment.
So, be patient.
If your teenager is the deepest conflict of his own,
They probably do not want to rush the matter right away.
It is natural that there are emergencies that leave no room for the patient to choose,
But signs must be observed.
Does this teenager need help here and now, at this moment,
Or can I wait?
All of this brings us back to the importance of education,
As a first step in the whole treatment approach.
For teens,
If you have an active mental illness,
Now, at this moment,
I want you to look at me.
I’m here, I breathe.
I suffer, I understand.
You may not be fine now but you will be
You need to realize the importance of self-care.
I always have a position on the negative concept associated with selfishness.
But there is no mistake to put yourself first.
Learn the adaptation mechanism that suits you.
Maybe they are exercises, yoga, drawing, playing music,
Watch romantic comedy horror movies.
Do everything you need to do to feel secure, comfortable, and reassuring that you are alive.
Sometimes, the adjustment mechanism does not work, and that’s fine.
It is important to be aware here
When you can not stand things alone.
While your best friends love and support you,
This does not mean that they can cure your mental illness.
Even if it is apparent,
There are those who sympathize and understand,
You can reach them.
Learn about these in your area.
Maybe it’s your consulting center or help number.
Call them, this will help you.
We all have to work together to give legitimacy to what young people feel today.
We have to talk about it, otherwise nothing will change.
I stand before you today because I am tired.
Tired of living in a community where, if you broke your hand, you get a splint,
But if your mind breaks, you get rejected.
During this presentation,
Twenty people around the world died of suicide.
Carefully appropriate and establish a support system,
Each of these deaths could have been avoided.
It is the personal responsibility of every human being
Helps to take a position to increase awareness of mental health.
It is time to stop the shame, began to support, save human life.
thank you.
(Applause) (and encouragement)
