(Applause)
Good evening everyone,
thank you for being here for us all.
When Béatrice Duboisset proposed to me to intervene for the TEDx on the mixing,
a Muslim father, a Jewish mother,
a modest social background,
a path of Parisian petty bourgeois arrival,
I thought, “Well, it’s for me! “
I kept my notes with me because I’m emotional,
the only problem is that I have trouble speaking in public
and besides this morning, in good Jewish,
I woke up with 39 ° C fever.
I’m going to ask you a little bit of indulgence.
(Applause)
Thank you.
As I said, I was raised in a city in La Courneuve,
where although the communist town hall has taken good care of us,
I often pissed myself off.
I was an only girl.
And I was not 14 years old, I was 8-9 years old,
I discovered Babcock,
These are old warehouses converted into a library.
I went back to the library and discovered Émile Zola’s Pot-Bouille.
Pot-Bouille is Rougon-Macquart.
And here I discover that the rich can be poor.
I discover another world.
The wealth of facade, behind the Haussmann facades,
there may be human poverty.
That’s it, I was bitten.
As Arnaud said, I plunged into literature.
It’s free, it’s silent, it’s cheap.
I started to devour the books.
Like something, woe is good,
working well at school,
loving the books,
the social ascendant naturally opened before me.
I went up :
good results at the bac,
désectorisation,
Sorbonne
Bachelor
DEA
DESS.
What I forget to mention is that my first year of DEUG,
I arrive, and there, there is a minister’s daughter,
Chevènement’s daughter, not to name her,
(Laughter)
who says to me:
“You still have a particular phrasing, you’re really a street girl. “
It is true that I come from La Courneuve, every night I go back,
I travel by RER, on foot, by metro.
The journey is long, from the Earth to the Moon.
And there,
I put him a right.
(Laughter)
(Applause)
You will believe me or not,
the daughter Villeroy & Boch, who was in DEUG of letters with me,
whose name was Juliet,
very nice,
she was anorexic like me, so it made us connections,
she comes to me and she says to me:
“Be careful: the poor, it knocks with fists,
but the rich with the lawyers. “
I thought, at that moment,
that the social mix, it would not be for immediately.
I continue my studies.
DESS, DEA, Wonderbra.
Intern in advertising, assistant to Frédéric Beigbeder,
to not name him,
I decided to swing everyone tonight.
(Laughter)
They come to see me and they give me an ad that says:
“Look at me in the eyes and tell me you love me. “
Look me in the eye and tell me you love me, Wonderbra.
I am told: “You trainee, you make letters,
translate it into French. “
I did not study English, but why not?
And there, I say, “Look me in the eyes, I said the eyes. “
International awards, in Cannes, etc.
Obviously, I do not have the reward, I go back to finish my doctorate.
But I’m starting a career in advertising,
because the boss – Pascal Maury – of the TBWA agency at the time,
climbs FCB and tells me:
“I give you 10,000 francs. per month
to come and make short sentences of editor. “
For me, 10,000 fr. per month,
I who was a scholar, it was the Grail.
I’m finishing my doctorate, I’m starting a career in advertising.
I tell it in my book: “Papa was not a Rolling Stone”.
I adapted it to the cinema.
I told in this book and in this film,
that I left the pub at the age of 39 after a divorce, a burnout,
an unwanted alternating guard …
I started doing what I wanted,
that is to say, to tell the life of my contemporaries,
to tell something that is close to my heart:
what is being a French citizen,
a French girl from the suburbs in today’s France?
The book is successful, the film too.
And then, recently,
for about a year,
I am regularly invited by town halls,
recently in Lyon and Grenoble
to project my film in theaters and then animate debates.
There, I discover in the neighborhoods of Lyon,
a world made of favelas,
– we can not call it otherwise –
with children who are completely disconnected from school,
three-quarters of households that are single parents.
And then a disaffection of all that, myself, held me up:
the values of the republic.
I take my notes.
I’m starting to talk to these young people, I’ve had a lot of discussions,
That’s why I’m talking about it tonight.
There, I am told, “There is no job,
France is shit, Jews are rich, blacks stink,
the Arabs, they are all veiled, they are all going to die. “
Everyone had it after everyone else actually.
I say to myself, “Shit. “
So I start to tell:
“I grew up in the 80s …
– Yeah, like my rem!
(Laughter)
– At a time when advertising was singing songs,
where we had yellow hands, ‘Do not touch my friend’
girls not veiled but we did not care,
we were doing Ramadan, Yom Kippur, we mixed.
Sacks of rice were sent to Africa without knowing if they were coming.
In any case, it circulated.
We went to each other.
It was not perfect,
Life in La Courneuve was not Club Med.
But still, and that, I told it in two books
we still laughed,
and above all, we went to each other.
I talked to these young people,
I talked with local officials
and there, the local elected officials tell me: “You hang pretty well young people,
what could you suggest
for people to go to each other?
– I do not know, I’m not the Messiah, I do not have a solution.
Already, if we started to share,
and then shit,
why not rely on what the country has beautiful:
the values of the republic? “
What is France?
I travel around the world, I travel a lot.
France is the CMU, the universal medical aid,
it’s a unique case in the world.
Anyone, it dates from Napoleon,
who crosses the country can get free treatment.
What is France?
It is possible to study for free.
And better, one day in New York when I said I was paid to study,
I was not believed.
I had 3,000 francs per quarter,
2,900 francs per quarter to study at the Sorbonne,
and for a long time.
I was trying to explain that to the young people.
The solution that I submitted, I do not know if it is good,
we must begin to reclaim the flag that makes the unity of this country,
his mix precisely,
this mosaic of cultures, languages
because we all have more or less diverse and variegated origins,
of kitchens, regions.
France itself is a mosaic country.
France itself is a very small country where there are all the landscapes,
where historically, there are several languages that coexist.
I mentioned this thing.
Why ?
I was told, “Oh dear, Marine Le Pen. “
No, no! There I paraphrased Romain Gary and I said …
Wait, I have to remember …
“Patriotism is the love of one’s family.
Nationalism is hatred of the other. “
Applaud.
(Applause)
I do not have any more saliva, so I resume my notes to recover.
Of course, they are in the mess.
My solution, that’s it, it’s a bit of a beta solution:
I think we moms, and even dads here,
it is our duty to restore the values of our country to our children.
I did not have a father,
There, you cry …
(Laughter)
I grew up without a father.
My father for me, what was it?
It was the school, it’s the scholarships I received.
It’s the fact that, whatever happens,
I know pretty much that my country will not let me down.
My father ?
When I was fired from advertising at 39,
in full divorce with fees and two young children:
it’s 23 months of Assedic.
I did not see that much on the planet.
I would just like to be reminded
to the youth of this country that despairs a little,
neighborhood youth,
whom I met.
Truly I was seized by the disenchantment of these children,
for their country, for their nation.
There is a little black man who says to me:
“Wait lady, I’ll tell you.
When I walk down the street, I’m in Lyon.
After, when I go up the elevator,
it’s like I’m flying, when I get home, I’m in Senegal. “
I told him, “That’s good, just when you’re in the street,
try to see what the school offers you.
Hang on at school!
– Yes, but I’m black.
– You know, I was in a city, 93120 La Courneuve,
it was hot too for the resume.
But hang on!
Your reward will be all the more delicious. “
Finally, I would like to show you the image of a woman.
She was born in Tunisia, she came to France at the age of 32
She was very attached to her country.
She arrived in France and she embraced the values of this country.
This woman is my grandmother, she is 93 years old.
She can not be here today.
She taught us, her 10 children,
his 28 grandchildren, not the great-grandchildren,
she taught us to love this country,
to respect him, to see what was beautiful.
She was rewarded a few years ago
the only degree she has ever had:
it is the gold medal of the French family.
I am very proud of her
and I dedicate my intervention to this TEDx and I embrace you.
(Applause)
