ReThink Before the Damage is Done | Trisha Prabhu | TEDxYouth@Hewitt

Students often hear words like:

We are the future

While I acknowledge this, I truly believe

We present as well.

This course led me through my whole work and my journey

To make this world a better place.

For me, my career began

In the fall of 2013.

I was 13 years old.

I came home after school to read an article online

About a girl of eleven years.

Her name was Rebecca,

She had been subject to electronic bullying for more than a year and a half.

One day, she decided she would not tolerate any more,

So she climbed up the tower of her city

I jumped out of it.

I have told that story many times I do not count it.

Her story was never easier on me at one time.

Because Rebecca is not the only person who has suffered such suffering.

Megan Mir, who was three weeks away from the age of fourteen

When I started receiving messages online

Such as: “The world will be a better place than Donk.”

Her mother found her in the closet of her room,

Where she hanged herself.

And 18-year-old Taylor Clemente

In his first year at Rutgers University

Has just revealed that he is a pariah of the world and his family and friends

One day, one of his fellow inmates thought it was fun

To broadcast a live video of Taylor and his friend

In one of their most intimate moments.

and the next day,

Taylor jumped from George Washington Bridge

To die.

These stories do not follow me

Because I wish more than anything to be able to rewrite it.

I wish I could go back in time

To make every man rethink what he has done

The question that will forever afflict me:

If you can, will Rebecca, Megan and Taylor remain alive today?

Electronic bullying is a big problem

52% of teenagers in America alone have been subject to electronic bullying

We are talking about 12 million people.

Many of these victims suffered from low self-esteem and depression

And suicidal tendencies in rare cases.

When I encountered this problem

I realized immediately

Social networking sites have not tried enough

To deter this behavior.

Many things they do

Such as allowing cyberbullying victims to block online bullying

What is the reaction that resulted after the damage.

But I preempted a solution.

I wanted to understand what children are doing

And how I used this understanding to address the problem

So I started a simple research

The adolescent brain is one of the most common parts of the human body

Genes in general are astounding

Because we understand very little about what he does.

But the brain always amazed me

And how we make decisions in our daily lives

There is something really exciting about our brains

It is when we are born

Our brain develops from the back forward

By the time we reach the age of 13, nearly 90% of it has been completed

Leaving only 10% unfinished, here at the front

Scientists call that part of the brain the frontal cortex.

Ironically, you adults

This part is responsible for decision-making and control of motivation.

So many of our teenagers end up making decisions

Regret it later.

Adults often ask, “What were you thinking about?”

“Have not you made such an act?”

And for any teenager here

I am sure they have gone through this reaction saying: “What?

I did not know what I was thinking about, I did it spontaneously without thinking

He was actually born for a moment. “

Adolescents are really not good at thinking about their actions.

So I thought how wonderful that was!

That’s why teens may not realize

The importance of Maincheron in social media

What if I could use what I knew about the adolescent brain

To create a solution that can stop cyber bullying?

Here is the Reithink application

Reethink gives any teenager

Is about to suspend an offensive commentary on social media

Such as: “committed suicide,” or “you are very ugly”

A second chance to reconsider his decision

“Hey, Trit

Are you sure this message is decent?

Are you sure you want to publish this in social media? “

When I first came up with this idea, I did not know if it would work

I did not know if the children would take them seriously

And whether they were already scientifically proven

But I know I have to prove its effectiveness

I had to make sure it was an effective solution

Therefore during the eighth grade in high school

1,500 experimental scientific studies were conducted

Which concluded that more than 93% of the times

When the adolescent has another chance to reconsider his decision

It changes that decision

And decides not to publish abusive commentary in social media

So the willingness to publish an abusive comment

Has actually decreased from 71% to less than 5%.

I was stunned!

Here I stand before the most effective proactive solution in the world

To stop cyber bullying when I am 14 years old

I was saying, “Oh my God, the solution was all the time.”

From there, Reithink started

I was fortunate to be able to travel around the world

To the White House

To MIT in Northwestern where they adopted me

To Google’s headquarters

And recently on Shark Tank on ABC.

None of these awards nor medals interest me as much

Make reethink up the hands of millions of children who need it

around the world.

It was an unforgettable moment at all

When Reethink was released free on Google Play Store and the Father Store.

We have seen hundreds of thousands of downloads.

We are currently working on the application of curriculum technology

For millions of students across the United States

And around the world.

We are trying to make Reithink a reality

In international languages

So that people in China, India and Europe can use Reethink

And to have a second chance to really determine who want to be online.

I recently received an e-mail from a girl telling me that she was her close friend

She was hospitalized because she was injuring herself

It has been subject to cyber bullying for years, years and years

She did not know how to tolerate it any more

Her friend told me: “I do not have much hope now,

But when I read stories like your stories,

I know there are people who care about this issue,

They want to do something about it. “

Her message reminded me that Reethink is not just a technological product

It is a social movement, it is a call to action

It is a cry of begging

Against a cause that suffers a lot.

I would like to thank all adolescents who have listened to this message:

You do not have to be a rocket scientist to change the world

You do not have to have Albert Einstein hair

It does not matter which country you are

It does not matter your race, gender or social and economic background

The only thing that matters is how much you can dream of

Do not be afraid to make mistakes.

This may not be the case

But we teens now have nothing to lose

We do not know fear

We can advance in this world and make something

I know that every one of you may think about what is around him

He saw problems in his community, things that interest you

Problems that affect not only the people around you

But affect many around the world.

“What can I do? I’m just a teenager.”

You should not think about this style of thinking at all

Think globally, and work locally

It may start small so there is no change, it is a very small project to notice

But when you take that step forward

You do not just take it for yourself

But you take it for everyone you support

around you.

That means a lot to your community, and to yourself too

Because he sees you more than what he says

The others about you, more than what the skeptics say about you.

You can be as you dream, and your hand will realize your dreams.

So I have the honor

I was able to share my story today

Because I am aware that I am not standing in a hall full of women

The future will only become the future

But rather very likely to become the present.

Thank you so much!

(clap)
