00:00:11going to do a special video and instead
00:00:13of the usual me on camera I thought of
00:00:15easier answer this one by doing some
00:00:17screen captures of my computer so it’s a
00:00:20question today from David Hurley who’s
00:00:22an active member in our forums and he’s
00:00:24asking how do you check your google
00:00:26rankings so the question that came up
00:00:27and he’s saying that your google
00:00:30rankings are really responsive to your
00:00:32own search history so it’s really hard
00:00:34to check from um computer how well
00:00:36you’re actually ranking so he says his
00:00:38way around it is to go to other
00:00:39computers like going to libraries for
00:00:41example or checking through bings but
00:00:44he’s one of this a better way to check
00:00:45the google rankings so yes there is and
00:00:48i want to quickly show you a couple
00:00:49quick tricks that hopefully can help you
00:00:51so the first thing I’ll do a search term
00:00:54for something on my own site i’ll type
00:00:56in famous entrepreneurs and i am logged
00:01:01in how you can tell is here it should
00:01:03say your name if you are logged in and
00:01:05what this will do is keep track of your
00:01:06own search results and try to show you
00:01:08things that you might be interested in
00:01:10so here you can see that one of my pages
00:01:13rank and this is a famous entrepreneur
00:01:16trading card set that we created I’m
00:01:18going to give that a plus-one while
00:01:19we’re here and you can see that i
00:01:21visited this page 8 x 24 and so they’re
00:01:23going to show it to me again the other
00:01:26way around this if you want to log out
00:01:28you can just click here and then go log
00:01:30out or i might use incognito mode which
00:01:34is a setting within chrome with whoever
00:01:36uses chrome and it’ll load an ink needle
00:01:39browser and from here you could type it
00:01:41in famous entrepreneurs again and you
00:01:44can see here that I’m not signed in so
00:01:47it says sign and give me the option but
00:01:48i’m not actually listed for that search
00:01:50term anymore so because I’m login is
00:01:52showing me results that are skewed so
00:01:54that’s what David’s asking about and
00:01:55he’s wondering if there’s another way
00:01:56around it so to help answer the question
00:01:59this is not necessarily the best way to
00:02:02do it because it’s also finding that I
00:02:04am based in Toronto Ontario Canada where
00:02:07I am so it’s also going to try to show
00:02:08me results that are skewed towards the
00:02:10Canadian market which I may not
00:02:12necessarily want if I’m targeting an
00:02:14international audience it also by
00:02:16default goes to google
00:02:17CA which again excuse towards a Canadian
00:02:19market so you want to make sure that at
00:02:23least you’re taking pages from the
00:02:24webinar pages from Canada but if you’re
00:02:26changing the location then every time
00:02:28it’s going to be specific to whatever
00:02:29location you’re in so the best way that
00:02:32I use that I know of to check for your
00:02:35rankings is actually through your google
00:02:36webmaster tools so if I load that up so
00:02:40this is the webmaster tools for me
00:02:41here’s my account you can see some of
00:02:43the stats that have come in through
00:02:45searches for the past month what you can
00:02:47do is click on your site on the web and
00:02:50then click to search queries and this is
00:02:53data right from google so I don’t know
00:02:55of any better data that you can get
00:02:57that’s not straight from Google’s mouths
00:02:59most of the other tools or third-party
00:03:01tools that aren’t necessarily accurate
00:03:03so what I’ll do here is it’ll show you
00:03:05some of the most popular keywords at
00:03:07your site’s ranking for you can go top
00:03:10queries top pages but if you use your
00:03:12filters you can go i use famous
00:03:15entrepreneur’s type that in and what
00:03:19it’s going to tell you here is how many
00:03:21queries that I’ve had that use that key
00:03:23phrase so you can see the list here and
00:03:25will tell you at least from my main
00:03:28keyword here I’ve had two thousand
00:03:29impressions which is down a little bit
00:03:32and my average position is 69 so I’m not
00:03:38ranking very well for that key phrase
00:03:40but when I am logged in I’m ranking
00:03:43within the the first page so this is the
00:03:45best method that I know again it’ll tell
00:03:48you what your average position is so
00:03:50that’ll be skewed some people will see
00:03:51it more than others but if you want to
00:03:54find out what your true ranking is this
00:03:56will give you your best indication as
00:03:58directly from Google’s data and it’s
00:04:00free as long as you have your google
00:04:02webmaster tools account set up the other
00:04:05thing I would recommend is that you try
00:04:07to get more social as much as you can a
00:04:09lot of the ranking factor is now going
00:04:11to be skewed towards the relationships
00:04:14that you have in social networks so if I
00:04:16do a quick example if I go back here and
00:04:18I type in my name
00:04:20then you’ll see that my website pops up
00:04:26here for my name which would make sense
00:04:28and you’ll see that underneath of the
00:04:31list people who’ve shared it so Maria
00:04:34was a contact of mine she works for me
00:04:35she shared it here on the site this is
00:04:38my belt page you see that I shared it
00:04:40and that visa shared it and that lots of
00:04:43other people have shared it as well and
00:04:46so the results are going to start being
00:04:48skewed towards people who are in your
00:04:49network and you want to make sure that
00:04:51the people in your network are sharing
00:04:52as much as possible so it increases the
00:04:54chance of you ranking for different
00:04:56keywords and why this is really
00:04:58important it does this for +1 and also
00:05:00will do it for Twitter right now why
00:05:03it’s really important if somebody gives
00:05:05your site a +1 for example who’s really
00:05:08influential in a tight network of where
00:05:10your customers are so you don’t
00:05:11necessarily need to be ranking number
00:05:13one across the entire globe but it is a
00:05:16particular group of people who you’re
00:05:18trying to target a really niche target
00:05:20audience if you get somebody who’s
00:05:22influential in that group to say and
00:05:25give you a plus one or two tweet about
00:05:26your web page then you’re gonna rank
00:05:29higher for anybody who’s in their
00:05:31contacts which is great because it’s all
00:05:34your target audience so you might not be
00:05:36ranking number one across the board but
00:05:38it doesn’t matter because you’re
00:05:39targeting your specific audience and
00:05:41it’s a quick way to jump to the first
00:05:43page where otherwise might be super
00:05:46difficult so it could change your
00:05:48strategy to try to target really
00:05:50influential people who are targeting
00:05:52your ideal customer and audience one
00:05:56last thing I want to talk about is the
00:05:57new google plus and there’s a feature
00:05:59that you can do to make your your Plus
00:06:01Ones public which most people haven’t
00:06:04done yet and by default is turn off
00:06:05maybe they’re going to change this in
00:06:07the future but i would encourage
00:06:09entrepreneurs to turn it on because as
00:06:11you’re using it and sharing it you one
00:06:13of the people you will see what you’re
00:06:14sharing because you can also share your
00:06:16website and make that public so if i go
00:06:19to my google plus this is your standard
00:06:21view if you click on your profile
00:06:25look licking your face go profile you’ll
00:06:29see on mine that I have Plus Ones here
00:06:31listed where most people don’t so if I
00:06:34load somebody was in my circle here
00:06:37you’ll see that by default these things
00:06:39are turned off so what you want to do is
00:06:41turn them on so that people can see all
00:06:44the stuff that you’re sharing and link
00:06:45to your website of course so the easy
00:06:48way to do it you just click on the plus
00:06:50ones that you’ll see and where is the
00:06:55option I haven’t done this for a while
00:06:57in here I’ll sorry edit profile then
00:07:01you’ll see here show this tab on your
00:07:03profile so you want to click that off
00:07:05and then save it and that’ll help make
00:07:07sure that anybody who comes sees your
00:07:09profile you’ve turned it on that you’re
00:07:11publicly sharing the information and
00:07:12your face will also show up under
00:07:14different posts that you like so back to
00:07:17the original question David I hope that
00:07:19helps I would use webmaster tools as
00:07:22much as possible to find out the exact
00:07:24worries and where your ranking the
00:07:26average position it’ll show you how many
00:07:28clicks you get how much it’s changed
00:07:29over time and I would also encourage you
00:07:32to try to get more social and try to
00:07:34reach specific people who are Authority
00:07:36leaders who are targeting your ideal
00:07:38customer base and get them to try to
00:07:39share it to help you rank for where your
00:07:42big customers are searching hope that
