00:00:08hi I’m Evan Carmichael and welcome to

00:00:11another edition of modeling the Masters

00:00:13I believe that the fastest and most

00:00:14effective way to grow a business is the

00:00:17model the strategies of people who’ve

00:00:18already done what you’re trying to do

00:00:20today’s post is brought to you by

00:00:22American Express candidate in their

00:00:23Facebook page they have a new contest

00:00:29you check out their page you can vote on

00:00:30which business owner should win the

00:00:32contest now today I want to talk about a

00:00:34young entrepreneur whose father didn’t

00:00:36believe he’d ever realized his goals he

00:00:39set out to prove his father wrong

00:00:40followed his passion for computers and

00:00:42went on to build one of the largest

00:00:44companies in the world this is a story

00:00:47of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and

00:00:49the top three lessons that you can learn

00:00:50from his success Steve Wozniak is a

00:00:55Polish American computer engineer and

00:00:57programmer who co-founded Apple while in

00:01:00school Wozniak tapped into his intense

00:01:02passion for computers and started

00:01:03designing computers on paper based on

00:01:05the theories that he knew he told his

00:01:07father that he would one day on his own

00:01:09computer when his father said well Steve

00:01:12they cost as much as a house Wozniak

00:01:14applied we’ll all live in an apartment

00:01:16Wozniak didn’t have friends growing up

00:01:18he spent his time between his schoolwork

00:01:20and his experiments things changed

00:01:23however when he met Steve Jobs with jobs

00:01:25the ability to convince people to give

00:01:27them parts Wozniak went to work on

00:01:29building the Apple one in 1976 Wozniak

00:01:33and jobs started Apple together with the

00:01:35goal of making computers a tool everyone

00:01:37could use not just for big corporations

00:01:40today Apple has over 100 billion dollars

00:01:43in revenues and is one of the largest 50

00:01:45companies in the world in two thousand

00:01:48Wozniak was inducted into the national

00:01:49inventors hall of fame and has received

00:01:51honorary degrees from multiple

00:01:53universities his plan was never to start

00:01:56a company but rather to design computers

00:01:58luckily for the world he decided to do

00:02:01both

00:02:02by staying committed to his dreams even

00:02:05when his father doubted him Steve

00:02:08Wozniak was able to build one of the

00:02:09largest companies in the world to help

00:02:12you scale up your company here are three

00:02:14options you can learn from Steve Wozniak

00:02:18auction item number one don’t think

00:02:21about the money you don’t have I can’t

00:02:23tell you how many times I hear from

00:02:25entrepreneurs that are not successful

00:02:26because they don’t have enough resources

00:02:28to start if you look at the stories of

00:02:31most famous entrepreneurs they didn’t

00:02:33have rich Investor’s given them a huge

00:02:34cash injection to launch their

00:02:36businesses it’s not about how much

00:02:38resources you have it’s about how

00:02:40resourceful yard that will determine

00:02:41your success as an entrepreneur Wozniak

00:02:45felt that his best work came from not

00:02:46having a lot of money to get started it

00:02:49forced him to be creative make things

00:02:51simpler and challenge conventional

00:02:53thinking being short on funds forced

00:02:56Wozniak to create over 50 designs for a

00:02:58mini computer before he hit on the right

00:03:00one that would work he saw it as a

00:03:03personal challenge to create a computer

00:03:04that could be sold to everyone like

00:03:06radios and televisions were and he

00:03:08wasn’t about to let a lack of money hold

00:03:10him back according to Wozniak when your

00:03:13startup or an individual on your own you

00:03:15don’t have very much money so the fewer

00:03:17parts you have to buy the better when

00:03:20you design with very few parts

00:03:21everything is so clean and orderly you

00:03:24can understand it more deeply in your

00:03:25head and that causes you to have fewer

00:03:28bugs you live and sleep with every

00:03:30little detail of the product Steve Jobs

00:03:33and i started with literally no money no

00:03:36cars the parts we use to create the

00:03:38Apple one where purchased on 30 days

00:03:40credit don’t think about the money you

00:03:42don’t have rather what can you do with

00:03:45what you do have

00:03:47action item number two focus being an

00:03:51entrepreneur requires a lot of

00:03:52dedication and hard work you have a goal

00:03:55for what you want your business to look

00:03:56like and you need to focus your energies

00:03:58and not get distracted until you get

00:04:00there don’t let the naysayers convince

00:04:02you that you won’t succeed and don’t

00:04:04give up too early before you’ve given

00:04:06your business enough of a chance to let

00:04:08momentum work in your favor Wozniak

00:04:11needed to focus to be productive at

00:04:12Apple he was stubborn with his ideas

00:04:15confident that his designs would work

00:04:17and force himself to keep going until he

00:04:19solved the problem it cost him his

00:04:22personal life in those early years but

00:04:24he was a man on a mission and knew

00:04:26exactly what he wanted so he went after

00:04:28with all the energy he could muster

00:04:30according to Wozniak the way I work

00:04:32requires so much concentration getting

00:04:35to know the problem well enough by

00:04:36thinking thinking thinking thinking and

00:04:38then you try every day to make it a

00:04:40little better go through it again and

00:04:42again cutting something off here or

00:04:45there when I was doing this work well I

00:04:47didn’t have a wife or a girlfriend I

00:04:49couldn’t do anything else action item

00:04:53number three partner up you can’t do it

00:04:56alone you either need a really good team

00:04:58around you or you have to partner up

00:05:00with someone else who complements your

00:05:01weaknesses this seems especially true in

00:05:04technology companies where it’s rarely

00:05:06one person who’s the founder of the

00:05:07business partnering up isn’t easy it’s

00:05:10like getting married you have to really

00:05:12know the person and make sure you’re

00:05:14picking someone you want to be with for

00:05:15the long haul Wozniak knew he had a

00:05:18unique set of skills that could

00:05:20revolutionize the way people ran their

00:05:22lives he realized though that he didn’t

00:05:24have the complete package that be needed

00:05:26to launch the revolution he needed

00:05:28someone who wasn’t as inward and quiet

00:05:30as he was he needed to partner with

00:05:32someone who liked to sell and promote

00:05:34and allow him to focus on the

00:05:36engineering side of the business

00:05:37partnering up with Steve Jobs proved to

00:05:40be a perfect match for both of them

00:05:41neither the two could have accomplished

00:05:44the same level of success without each

00:05:45other according to Wozniak I was shy he

00:05:49was at word I created he sold I had the

00:05:53incredible technology which was

00:05:54important when you’re starting up and

00:05:56have very few employees Steve had this

00:05:58big

00:05:59I have to have a company and he had

00:06:00foresight so remember don’t think about

00:06:05the money you don’t have focus and

00:06:08partner up to finish up this video I

00:06:10wanted to share one of my favorite true

00:06:12stories about Steve Wozniak and some of

00:06:14his best quotes Wozniak’s volt is HP

00:06:19calculator and Steve Jobs sold his

00:06:21Volkswagen van raising thirteen hundred

00:06:24dollars to fund the launch of Apple jobs

00:06:26told Wozniak that even if they were not

00:06:28successful they could at least tell the

00:06:30grandkids that they had their own

00:06:32company thank you for joining me for

00:06:36another edition of modern masters if you

00:06:38liked the video i want to see more
