00:00:31in a previous project I built a
00:00:33generator that uses electricity to
00:00:35convert water into a very powerful fuel
00:00:37the amount of electricity available
00:00:39determines how much gas can be produced
00:00:41and using a couple of car batteries I’ve
00:00:43been able to produce over five litres a
00:00:45minute I’ve even tried powering it with
00:00:46a makeshift hand crank generator like
00:00:48this one but obviously the gas
00:00:50production is slower so just how
00:00:52powerful is the gas to find out I’ve
00:00:54rounded up some plastic cups some liquid
00:00:56dish soap and water because we’re going
00:00:58to make some bubbles I’m pouring just a
00:01:00little bit of water into this cup
00:01:01followed by a quick shot of soap and
00:01:02even that’s probably more than I need
00:01:04agitate the cup like this we’ll mix the
00:01:06two together and while I’m here I may as
00:01:08well fill up the rest of these cups as
00:01:09well now it’s time to put in some ear
00:01:11plugs and safety glasses because this
00:01:13next part could be dangerous using
00:01:15jumper cables I’ve connected to my car
00:01:17battery to get the system warmed up when
00:01:19the gas makes its way through the lines
00:01:20you can see it pushing up through the
00:01:22bubbler and now I can take the end of
00:01:23the tubing and place it inside of the
00:01:25soap solution to start collecting some
00:01:26gas the gas is just a mixture of h2o
00:01:29molecules broken down into their gaseous
00:01:31elements of two parts hydrogen and one
00:01:33part oxygen this is sometimes called hho
00:01:35or hydroxy gas alright the bubbles have
00:01:38reached the top of the cup so I’ll
00:01:39gently remove the tubing trying not to
00:01:41disturb the bubbles too much then use a
00:01:43BBQ igniter to see if the bubbles will
00:01:45pop that’s crazy even without a lid the
00:01:49cup is completely torn to shreds well
00:01:51that’s why I’ve got more cups so I can
00:01:52do it again
00:01:53this one looks ready so let’s add some
00:01:55fire when the bubbles explode the gas
00:01:57burns clean and turns back into water
00:01:59vapor there’s something elementally
00:02:01exciting about using fire to make water
00:02:03and I’ve just done it again with cup
00:02:05four and cup
00:02:06five funny enough did you also know that
00:02:08you can use water to make a fire look
00:02:10for that in a different project
00:02:11okay these cups are completely destroyed
00:02:13so I’m trying something a little
00:02:15different with this last one I filled it
00:02:17all the way to the top and stirred in a
00:02:18little more soap and this time when the
00:02:20bubbles are pouring over the top
00:02:21they light off with just as much power
00:02:23but the cup stays intact this allows me
00:02:25to use the same cup again and again some
00:02:28people might ask what the purpose of the
00:02:29bubbler is well it helps clean the gas
00:02:31but more importantly it acts as a flame
00:02:33arrestor in the event of a flashback
00:02:35like this if that flame were to get back
00:02:37inside your generator it would probably
00:02:38do some damage the bubbler cap is just
00:02:40pressed on so if there’s a tiny
00:02:42flashback explosion the worst thing that
00:02:44happens is the cap pops off if the
00:02:46bubbler is a little low on fluid then be
00:02:48careful because now the gas has a place
00:02:49to build up and if you were to get a
00:02:51flashback in this situation it could be
00:02:53a little more dramatic it’s helpful to
00:02:55keep the bubbler full so I made it
00:02:56detachable for ease of use okay my next
00:02:59test is to fill a plastic soda bottle
00:03:01and I’ll show you how to do that in a
00:03:02minute
00:03:02with the cap off the gas is slowly
00:03:04leaking out and when touched to a flame
00:03:06it takes off with quite a bit of energy
00:03:07small bottles are fairly safe to play
00:03:10with but anything bigger than this needs
00:03:12to be lit from a distance I just made
00:03:14this remote detonator pad so I can
00:03:15ignite larger bottles from over 20 feet
00:03:17away I have these bottles filled with
00:03:19water and to charge them with gas I hold
00:03:21them upside down in a bucket of water
00:03:22the lid gets removed below the water
00:03:24line so I can insert the tube up inside
00:03:27the bottle and when the electrical
00:03:28connection is made the gas bubbles up
00:03:30inside forcing the water down and out
00:03:32after all the water has been pushed out
00:03:34the tube gets removed and the cap
00:03:35screwed back on and now this bottle is
00:03:37full of hydroxy gas ready for ignition
00:03:39igniting it this way is pretty risky but
00:03:42I felt like I had to try it
00:03:43this here is the safer way the bottle is
00:03:46placed carefully on the detonator pad
00:03:47and then from a distance I can fire it
00:03:49off at will soda bottles have pressure
00:03:51rated plastic that can withstand the
00:03:53explosive power turning these into
00:03:55makeshift Rockets and rather than
00:03:57exploding they can be reused over again
00:03:59in contrast the plastic on a water
00:04:01bottle is weak and doesn’t survive the
00:04:03blast I’m filling up a milk jug using
00:04:05the same technique as the bottles and
00:04:07now we’ve got one gallon of gas ready to
00:04:09go
00:04:10and that is powerful I’m probably gonna
00:04:13have to do that again
00:04:14whoo nice nothing but shrapnel and
00:04:18that’s really cool this juice jug has
00:04:20thicker plastic and explodes with
00:04:22incredible force when I set this jug off
00:04:26neighbor told me he felt the floor in
00:04:28his house shake well the generator is
00:04:30getting hot so it’s time to shut it down
00:04:31and put everything away for the day
