How to prepare an onion – Jamie Oliver’s Home Cooking Skills

00:00:00say chopping onions pick your onion so

00:00:11yours is sort of peeled already you

00:00:13picked a good one you’ve still got a way

00:00:15to go so first of all the first thing to

00:00:17do

00:00:18onion on the board nice and securely and

00:00:22then fingers like a bridge and then very

00:00:26carefully put your knife through the

00:00:29bridge and straight down the middle okay

00:00:34so now that it’s in half it means you

00:00:37can get in at that outer skin and peel

00:00:40it off you will ugly you fold one that

00:00:45didn’t turn me on and away

00:00:58so cut the nose off the point of it at

00:01:02the top that’s a bit papery and old so

00:01:05we don’t want to eat that and just slow

00:01:09down because this bit I don’t want you

00:01:11to cut that off all that stop cutting

00:01:15stop stop stop this bit at the end we’re

00:01:18going to keep that on because that’s

00:01:19going to help us it’s gonna keep the

00:01:21onion together while we’re chopping but

00:01:23cuz it’s a bit hairy you just slice it

00:01:27just a little bit just to take off those

00:01:30hairy gnarly bits essentially you want

00:01:35to leave it on there so it holds it all

00:01:37together still so if you’re chopping

00:01:42your onion just in two slices you want

00:01:45it on the nice flat straight bit that

00:01:47you’ve just cut so it’s nice and firm

00:01:50against the board and you’ve got a good

00:01:51cutting surface tip of your knife on the

00:01:54board fingers out the way using your

00:02:02fingertips and then when you get halfway

00:02:07it makes it a bit easier if you just

00:02:10flip it over because it’s getting a bit

00:02:13narrow now with your fingers just flip

00:02:15it over and then start again then if

00:02:24you’ve got a bit at the end

00:02:36push that to one side and then we’ll do

00:02:42fine finely chopped onion so if you’ve

00:02:46got your half it’s still got its bottom

00:02:47it on it keeps it all together you want

00:02:52the other end towards you so turn it to

00:02:55bomb away from you like this and then

00:02:58with your knife keeping your fingers out

00:03:00of the way carefully cut into the onion

00:03:05but not all the way through so you

00:03:08leaving this

00:03:09it intact use the tip of your knife and

00:03:11just press into the onion that’s it and

00:03:15try not to go all the way to the back

00:03:16though go all the way along tip see your

00:03:35fingers okay breathe so then turn it

00:03:41back to the side again with his bum away

00:03:43from you and then you’re just going to

00:03:45slice down like we did before but use

00:03:48your fingers to grip all the strands

00:03:50that you’ve just cut and keep them

00:03:52together down again when you get towards

00:04:01the end bit you can flip it on its side

00:04:04again chop it the other way that’s it

00:04:14let’s now finally tuck that is awesome

00:04:18on sick brilliant that’s it two ways to

00:04:25chop an onion
