How to prepare an orange – Jamie Oliver’s Home Cooking Skills

00:00:00so we’re going to prepare oranges like

00:00:02you do them for a salad or for like a

00:00:05fruit salad so into segments or slices

00:00:10so grab an orange one and then cuz it’s

00:00:17round obviously it’s rolling all over

00:00:18the shop what you want to do is you want

00:00:20it to sit nice and firmly on your board

00:00:22so we take its heel off and its top off

00:00:35and then starting at the top you’re

00:00:40gonna put your blade in and then you’re

00:00:42going to follow around the shape of the

00:00:43orange soaring down and then tucking it

00:00:47back under following the shape to take

00:00:51your strip of peel off keeping your

00:00:53fingers on top and getting rid of all

00:00:56this white stuff the pith cuz that’s

00:00:58bitter we don’t want that you want to go

00:01:00down to the flesh like this

00:01:10try keep it flat on the board so now

00:01:13we’ve got most of our peel of the orange

00:01:15we want to just go round again and trim

00:01:18the bits that we missed that leave these

00:01:20white bits cuz that’s the pith and

00:01:21that’s bitter and we didn’t want to eat

00:01:23them yet perfect right perfect

00:01:39so then we’re ready to take the

00:01:42segment’s and if you look around you see

00:01:44these lines going down the orange each

00:01:47each each line is a piece of skin that’s

00:01:50separate like you know when you eat an

00:01:53you peel an orange to eat and you pull

00:01:54it apart and its segments that’s what

00:01:57that is and that’s not so it’s fine to

00:02:00eat but it’s not so great to eat if you

00:02:02want the really nice soft juicy bits

00:02:03that were making the effort to get so

00:02:06we’re going to cut them out till you

00:02:07want your bowl Roy grab your bowl and

00:02:11we’re going to cut over a bowl because

00:02:13then that catches all of the juice that

00:02:16you might lose so you look for the lines

00:02:18on your orange and then you put your

00:02:22knife just ever so slightly to the side

00:02:24of one and you gently saw down towards

00:02:29the middle of the orange but gently

00:02:33gently gently and the same the other

00:02:35side and then you can just pop out a

00:02:40little slice of are you use the tip Ian

00:02:45ah

00:02:58that’s it tease it out bring these lines

00:03:04game down your orange you put your knife

00:03:05just to one side of one you pick a

00:03:08segment you put your knife to the side

00:03:09then you follow it down soaring with the

00:03:12tip as you go down but making sure you

00:03:14don’t go too far you just go into the

00:03:16middle of the orange back to the top

00:03:18again and down the other side or another

00:03:33way you can do it is if you’ve got your

00:03:36orange to that point

00:03:37he’s peeled it you can always just cut

00:03:41it in nice rounds that look really nice

00:03:44– that’s it had two segments an orange

00:03:53done
