00:00:00[Music]

00:00:00here’s a third fantastic theme that has

00:00:03influenced some of the most beautiful

00:00:04and profound protest songs of all time

00:00:07and that is the killing of a peaceful

00:00:09protester think Bloody Sunday think Kent

00:00:12State these are just these are just

00:00:14perfect examples that have become really

00:00:16really publicized over the years and

00:00:19essentially what i’m talking about is

00:00:21when people very often students go in

00:00:24and they’re protesting a fantastic

00:00:27example of this is Kent State University

00:00:29for example where there was a peaceful

00:00:31protest going on to demonstrate against

00:00:34the Vietnam War but it was it was a

00:00:35protest that was really a student-based

00:00:37protest and these students at Kent State

00:00:39University went out and they were

00:00:40peacefully protesting and the police

00:00:42came in to break it up and at the end of

00:00:45the day there were 44 people killed nine

00:00:48injured one of them one of them was

00:00:51confront was paralyzed and and it was

00:00:54just a horrible horrible display that

00:00:57really shocked and offended a lot of

00:01:00people and and a ton of artists over the

00:01:02years have had looked back at that one

00:01:05particular instance and said whoa there

00:01:06was something wrong there the most

00:01:08quintessential song ever written about

00:01:09it is is the cs my song crosby Stills

00:01:12Nash and young song Ohio and let me

00:01:15quote from that song I think it may say

00:01:17it better than I could ever than I could

00:01:18ever they say got to get down to it

00:01:21soldiers are cutting us down you should

00:01:22have been done long ago what if you knew

00:01:24her and found her dead on the ground how

00:01:26can you run when you know I just thought

00:01:28that was so interesting and so fantastic

00:01:30and so indicative of what these people

00:01:31were trying to do and what they were

00:01:32trying to say a guy like me Leon for

00:01:34example isn’t out there telling you to

00:01:36go pick up a gun he’s just asking you to

00:01:38open your eyes into

00:01:39to to look around what’s going on in the

00:01:41world Neil Young actually a fun fact was

00:01:43also a member of another band it was

00:01:47really known for its peaceful protest

00:01:49songs which is Buffalo Springfield

00:01:51Buffalo Springfield are the ones who who

00:01:53asked us to stop and look around and

00:01:55it’s also interesting because Neil Young

00:01:58was in Buffalo Springfield with Stephen

00:02:00Stills who later became a member of

00:02:02causes too much I’d like to read you a

00:02:05quote from David Crosby it was given a

00:02:072000 interview and I thought it was

00:02:09great and I thought it was really

00:02:11indicative of what these artists were

00:02:12trying to do so David Crosby says you

00:02:15know our main job is to entertain but

00:02:16there’s also the part of us to be the

00:02:18town crier to be the troubadour the guy

00:02:20that says 12 o’clock all’s well 1130 and

00:02:23not so darn good and Nash felt strongly

00:02:26that it was a travesty of American

00:02:28justice and it was it was a complete

00:02:30travesty you can’t chain a man to a

00:02:31chair and gag him and say that you’re

00:02:33having a free trial it just doesn’t work

00:02:34that way I just thought that was amazing

00:02:36and I thought that really kind of was

00:02:38indicative of what crosby Stills Nash

00:02:40and young we’re trying to do they were

00:02:42just essentially saying hey everybody

00:02:44wake up this is what’s going on in our

00:02:46world this is what’s going on in society

00:02:47it’s not right and we really need to

00:02:51take a look at it
