How To Contribute to Open Source

00:00:00if you’re like most computer enthusiasts

00:00:03you’ve given thought to contributing to

00:00:05one of the many free and open source

00:00:06software projects available on the

00:00:08internet after all it behooves you to

00:00:10make sure that the programs that you use

00:00:12continue to be available and to improve

00:00:14what a lot of people don’t know who

00:00:16however is how they should go about

00:00:18contributing to such a project what are

00:00:20the ground rules you need to know in

00:00:22order to contribute to a team of fire

00:00:24flowing volunteers working across the

00:00:26internet before we go any further I

00:00:28should mention that you can still

00:00:29contribute to free and open source

00:00:31software projects even if you don’t know

00:00:33a thing about programming for instance

00:00:35if you’ve ever heard the term programmer

00:00:37art you know that it’s something that

00:00:39should be avoided at all costs in fact

00:00:41if you see programmer our chances are

00:00:44your retinas could be damaged button

00:00:46images splash screens icons skins themes

00:00:50technical illustrations all of these

00:00:53require the skills of someone that knows

00:00:55their way around a sketchbook more than

00:00:57they know their way around a code editor

00:00:59and of course we can’t forget about

00:01:00people with writing skills most free and

00:01:03open source software projects are

00:01:04completely lacking and documentation or

00:01:06if somebody scrawled something it’s a

00:01:08feeble effort at best if you’ve got the

00:01:10knack of stringing words together into

00:01:12sentences that are actually

00:01:13comprehensible and please consider

00:01:16writing a tutorial or other sorts of

00:01:17documentation and contribute your

00:01:20project in that way lots of projects

00:01:22make it especially easy to start

00:01:23contributing to documentation by hosting

00:01:25their documentation on a website what’s

00:01:28called in what’s called a wiki which

00:01:30means that you can visit the website and

00:01:32begin editing it right away no fuss no

00:01:34muss just dive in and start making

00:01:36contributions
