Flamenco Guitarist Interview

00:00:04today we have the chance to interview a

00:00:06professional flamenco guitar player from

00:00:08Montreal Dominic sula Dominic tell me

00:00:11how many years you’ve been playing the

00:00:13guitar I’ve been playing flamenco guitar

00:00:16for 10 years but I’ve played all sorts

00:00:18of different styles before that like

00:00:20over the last 20 years I guess even more

00:00:22why do you choose the flamenco guitar

00:00:25because it’s very physical it’s a very

00:00:28intense music and it’s the best way I

00:00:32found myself to express myself is there

00:00:35a difference between the flamenco guitar

00:00:37and the classic guitar plumbing co

00:00:39guitar is very more intense more a bit

00:00:41more violent aggressive has a lots of

00:00:45it’s much more there’s a lot of dynamic

00:00:50strong soft lots of rhythm guitar lots

00:00:53of free playing so it’s very different

00:00:57yes do you need to know how to read

00:00:59music no you don’t for any kind of music

00:01:02you don’t need to read music now and but

00:01:05flamenco is an oral tradition so I

00:01:09learned by the traditional way is by

00:01:12copying the person in front of you they

00:01:15show it something to you and you try to

00:01:17copy it they have a special exercise

00:01:21that you have to do every day

00:01:23[Music]

00:01:28flamenco thumb goes

00:01:31you rest on the string below so it’s

00:01:34very typical for from the flamenco

00:01:36guitar to do this kind of sound I’m

00:01:42compared to this so I practice that

00:01:47these are Li Gatos from the left hand

00:01:49[Music]

00:01:53before breakfast I do that how many

00:01:56different styles of reedham exists the

00:01:58flamenco’s they like to say there’s 80

00:02:00different styles but actually there’s

00:02:02five or six and all the other ones are

00:02:06derived from these five or six basic

00:02:10rhythms do you have a special treatment

00:02:12for your nails so I put crazy glue to

00:02:15harden the nails and also some Kleenex

00:02:18that gives it a thicker texture so my

00:02:23nails do not break because I play very

00:02:24hard with the dancing like this all the

00:02:27time so my natural nails would not

00:02:29actually survive this kind of treatment

00:02:31what qualities do you need to become a

00:02:34flamenco guitar player first of all you

00:02:38need to be a bit obsessive or a very

00:02:42passionate about it that’s the first

00:02:44thing and after that if you need rhythm

00:02:47lots of rhythm to be open you need to be

00:02:50able to learn really fast and memorize

00:02:52very fast because also the dancing we

00:02:56learn the dance as we go on we don’t

00:02:58write we don’t choreograph on paper or

00:03:00whatever we just we invent and we

00:03:03memorize all the time so you need good

00:03:05memory we know that that we saw that

00:03:07answer before but the musicians also

00:03:09know how to dance so no no no no that’s

00:03:14no no dancing ok so you as cheetah for
