00:00:08mythological animal extraordinarily
00:00:11graceful and yet considered potentially
00:00:16lethal
00:00:22though not aggressive the Stingray is
00:00:24equipped with a fearsome means of
00:00:26defense a venomous find found near the
00:00:30base of its powerful whip-like tail
00:00:34a large ring can drive the spine into a
00:00:37wooden boat or deliver an extremely
00:00:40seriously painful wound its most
00:00:45dangerous when line camouflaged and sand
00:00:47it moves slowly foraging for
00:00:51invertebrates hidden on the sea floor
00:00:55because a stingrays eyes are on top of
00:00:58its head and its mouth and nostrils
00:01:00below it can actually see what it’s
00:01:03eating it finds its food by smell touch
00:01:07and by sensing the electrical field of
00:01:10its prey the southern stingray is one of
00:01:14some 90 species of stingray like a
00:01:17prehistoric bird it’s huge fins can
00:01:20reach up to six feet across
00:01:23they’re usually shy and elusive animals
00:01:26hard to get close to but the warm clear
00:01:29waters of the Cayman Islands offer
00:01:31something different on the north side of
00:01:34Grand Cayman Island swarms of stingrays
00:01:37live inside a protective barrier reef
00:01:39where the water is calm and shallow
00:01:47nicknamed Stingray City this is one of
00:01:50the only places on earth where stingrays
00:01:53are used to people here divers can swim
00:02:03alongside the Rays and meet these
00:02:05remarkable animals face the fin
