Shark Battleground: The Red Triangle | National Geographic

00:00:0920 year-old Megan halav a and her

00:00:12boyfriend Johnny hit the beach at salmon

00:00:14creek near the small fishing village of

00:00:17bodega bay

00:00:19on that day the weather is calm the

00:00:22water glassy and the waves cresting at

00:00:2510 feet

00:00:28we just hide down the beach because we

00:00:30saw three of our friends our out in the

00:00:32water down there really good better than

00:00:34anywhere else

00:00:38they paddle out 200 yards to join a pack

00:00:41of surfers but Megan decides to paddle

00:00:44out another 20 feet

00:00:52I was sitting a little bit north of the

00:00:54pack just because there’s a wave there I

00:00:56liked better than the waves they were

00:00:58surfing

00:00:59I was alone sitting there and I started

00:01:03to get just like a eerie feeling almost

00:01:07like warm tingles in my spine

00:01:22right as I took one stroke in the water

00:01:25this shark just came out of the water

00:01:27hit me

00:01:30a massive great white shark sinks its

00:01:33teeth into Megan’s thigh one wrong move

00:01:36and she’ll lose her leg or worse I was

00:01:39just pushing myself away from it almost

00:01:42feeling like I was pushing down on it

00:01:44but it was only I couldn’t move that it

00:01:46can do anything the shark

00:01:49let’s go but Megan’s not out of danger

00:01:51she screams for help attracting the

00:01:55attention of Britt horn a lifeguard

00:01:57surfing on his day off I turned saw the

00:02:01shark’s fin I knew it was a really big

00:02:04shark just from the size of fin it

00:02:05looked to be over two foot maybe three

00:02:07foot tall huge triangle the shark had

00:02:11rolled onto its side its Peck whole

00:02:14pectoral fin came out looking like

00:02:15elephant ears huge

00:02:24despite their fears Britt Megan’s

00:02:27boyfriend Johnny and other nearby

00:02:29surfers thrash through the waves to

00:02:31rescue Megan as soon as I saw the sucker

00:02:34shark and hit Megan and started paddling

00:02:37that direction I was afraid for myself

00:02:39and the other surfers I had no idea

00:02:41whether it was going to hit me or any of

00:02:43the other guys in the water with the

00:02:47sharks submerged Megan’s in shock would

00:02:50it attack again

00:02:53I reached my hand out and the next thing

00:02:55I remember I was coming up from

00:02:56underneath the water and I just grabbed

00:02:59on to Johnny’s back and they made a

00:03:01circle around me and we all paddled in

00:03:03together my whole thing was trying to

00:03:05keep everybody calm

00:03:06staying close to Megan back on shore

00:03:10Megan discovers the severity of the

00:03:13injuries to her leg I tried to put my

00:03:16feet down my whole leg just gave out and

00:03:19before I could fall they just like

00:03:21grabbed me and pulled me up the beach at

00:03:24that point my main concern was just

00:03:26keeping Megan’s level of consciousness

00:03:29up and alert and not letting her

00:03:31starting to spin down and go into shock

00:03:39Bodega Bay Fire Department paramedics

00:03:41raced to the scene

00:03:42a helicopter transports her to the

00:03:45hospital where doctors treat her

00:03:47injuries the shark bit deep into her

00:03:52right leg from her calf to her upper

00:03:54thigh based on the bite diameter of 19

00:03:57inches and the teeth in her spacing of

00:04:00two and a half inches in Megan’s

00:04:01surfboard experts estimate this great

00:04:04white is between 18 and 19 feet in

00:04:07length and over 4,000 pounds 2 tons the

00:04:14whole thing goes from here all the way

00:04:18down all the way down to my calf and

00:04:21that is the span of actually just the

00:04:25first 12 teeth of the shark’s mouth
