00:00:16Maya Angelou once said a solitary
00:00:21fantasy can transform a million
00:00:23realities what dream or vision do you
00:00:28want to turn into reality I always
00:00:32wanted to go into business for myself I
00:00:34could be a consultant I’m going to go
00:00:37gluten-free right after I eat that last
00:00:39piece of chocolate cake you know one day
00:00:43I’m gonna stand up to that crabby boss I
00:00:46look good on paper I should feel great I
00:00:50just know there’s more you know it
00:00:55because you feel it you lie awake at
00:00:58night you talk about your dreams with
00:01:00your partner and your friends but more
00:01:03often than not you continue to do those
00:01:05same behaviors that keep you from making
00:01:08the change you ask yourself how can I
00:01:12make it happen
00:01:14research shows the odds against you
00:01:17making a change in your life nine to one
00:01:21nine to one even if you’re facing a
00:01:24life-threatening illness but let me show
00:01:28you how to beat those odds you can live
00:01:32the life you desire it’s right there in
00:01:34front of you but in order to achieve it
00:01:37you must first see it then believe it
00:01:40and then you must graciously ask and
00:01:44train your brain to help you execute
00:01:48your vision so how do we see our vision
00:01:52through a picture a picture can create
00:01:56movements a picture
00:02:00can unite nations a picture can pull it
00:02:05your heart and fill you with a deep
00:02:07desire to do something at Roche
00:02:10pharmaceutical the president asked us to
00:02:12create a picture of his vision prior to
00:02:15having one less than 40% of the
00:02:19employees understood the company’s
00:02:20vision and strategy after seeing this
00:02:24picture 96 percent understood it and 84
00:02:29percent understood how what they did
00:02:31every day aligned to that picture so how
00:02:36can you use a picture to get what you
00:02:39want by simply drawing one you don’t
00:02:43have to be an artist or know how to draw
00:02:46as naive as your drawings might be when
00:02:50you draw where you are your current
00:02:54state and where you want to be your
00:02:58desired new reality suddenly you have a
00:03:07roadmap for change so what is your
00:03:10current state well let’s say you’re Joe
00:03:14Joe has a good job Joe
00:03:19has a lovely wife Amy Joe makes good
00:03:27money but like many of us Joe wants more
00:03:32from life and he’d like to get rid of a
00:03:34couple of things maybe that intense
00:03:37workload maybe that negative boss maybe
00:03:44Joe has a higher purpose he’s just not
00:03:48sure how to get there so now Joe’s
00:03:51current state is visual we remember
00:03:54things better when they’re attached to a
00:03:55picture
00:03:5665% better to be exact so now let’s
00:04:01imagine that Joe wants to change
00:04:03something in his current state he wants
00:04:06to build that desired new reality that
00:04:10he dreams about in or
00:04:13Joe to freely dream he must first trick
00:04:19his brain because the left side of your
00:04:22brain as you know houses the critic who
00:04:24is forever trying to keep you safe from
00:04:26harm make sure you don’t do anything
00:04:27dangerous or stupid so let’s have Joe
00:04:31tell the critic that he’s just going to
00:04:33use his imagination using your
00:04:36imagination
00:04:37activates the right side of your brain
00:04:39which makes you creative and filled with
00:04:41possibility so now let’s dream Joe’s new
00:04:46life in the best case scenario one year
00:04:50from today what is Joe’s life like Hey
00:04:54Joe has a new job awright Joe has a new
00:05:00boss himself Joe has a couple of great
00:05:05collaborators and Joe is just bursting
00:05:08with creativity and ideas and all of
00:05:13those things we dream about connections
00:05:16and purpose and freedom and love now I’m
00:05:33drawing this picture as a favor to Joe
00:05:34today but in real life
00:05:36he’d have to draw his own picture
00:05:38because he can’t afford me actually
00:05:44because you get the most power when you
00:05:47paint your own picture so now Joe has
00:05:50his drawing so now he’s got to soak it
00:05:53in he has to fill it with color he has
00:05:58to fill it with emotion he has to get
00:06:03inside of it as if he’s on the inside
00:06:07looking out your brain actually emits
00:06:12serotonin and oxytocin when you draw and
00:06:16dream so you feel happy
00:06:22capable creative you feel cool so now we
00:06:29have Joe’s current state and Joe’s
00:06:30desired new reality so how can Joe get
00:06:34from here to there in just three bold
00:06:38steps three bold steps if I knew how to
00:06:42get from here to there in three bold
00:06:44steps I would have done it 25 years ago
00:06:46but I had a mullet here’s where the
00:06:51magic begins your brain knows you it’s
00:06:55cataloged everything you’ve ever seen
00:06:57heard experienced real or imagined you
00:07:01just have to ask it to put the pieces
00:07:03together for you it’s as simple as that
00:07:06we live in a three-dimensional world but
00:07:10the light falls on the retina in a
00:07:12two-dimensional fashion and the brain it
00:07:15has to cope with it
00:07:16so how does it deal with this extra
00:07:18dimension it guesses it guesses and just
00:07:27as it can guess where your cup of coffee
00:07:28is when it goes to pick it up it can
00:07:30correctly guess what the three bold
00:07:33steps are that you should take all you
00:07:35have to do is look at your picture and
00:07:38then close your eyes this allows the
00:07:42brain to to recycle what it sees and
00:07:45reconstruct it add to it everything
00:07:48you’ve ever seen heard experienced or
00:07:50fantasized about and then it will serve
00:07:54you up with the best possible solution
00:07:56if you just relax and you ask it now
00:08:01what’s the boldest thing I could do to
00:08:03get from here to there boom immediately
00:08:07it will tell you see it believe it
00:08:15act on it now the danger is if any of
00:08:20those three bold steps are too scary
00:08:22this instinctual rational side of your
00:08:24brain is going to try to talk you out of
00:08:25this oh no no I don’t want to do that
00:08:28oh that desk it’s not too small my legs
00:08:31aren’t cramped under there Oh twenty
00:08:35thousand a year oh that’s a decent
00:08:37salary oh that boss he’s he’s not that
00:08:42mean to me you know what I’m just gonna
00:08:44stay right here I feel really
00:08:46comfortable here so how can you get
00:08:52yourself to do the boldest thing by
00:08:55drawing the most compelling picture so
00:08:57when you look here you’re in pain it
00:08:59hurts when you’re here you’re ecstatic
00:09:03it’s fantastic you’re already living
00:09:05inside that connected and free life you
00:09:08drew so every day you get up you soak in
00:09:12your picture you step into the
00:09:15possibility and this is the most
00:09:17important part you act on it you do one
00:09:21small thing you call up that friend you
00:09:24know who started her own business you
00:09:25ask her how did you do it you ask Amy
00:09:27will you support me in my vision you go
00:09:31to your boss and you ask him for a raise
00:09:33and you become that one person out of
00:09:37ten to make change happen now I put this
00:09:41template on your chair so that you could
00:09:44do for yourself what I just did for Joe
00:09:47you’ve seen some fantastic ideas today
00:09:51that have inspired your dream I dare you
00:09:55to draw that dream into that template I
00:09:58double dare you to choose a symbol in
00:10:02your drawing that represents that
00:10:04desired new reality take a picture of it
00:10:07with your phone and send it to us at
00:10:09TEDx Rainier Maya Angelou said a
00:10:13solitary fantasy can transform a million
00:10:16realities just three bold steps can
00:10:20transform one reality yours thank you
