I’d like to start with a story about

I’d like to start with a story about myself many years ago when I was at

myself many years ago when I was at

myself many years ago when I was at university I I fell in love with a

university I I fell in love with a

university I I fell in love with a wonderful girl and it was my first love

wonderful girl and it was my first love

wonderful girl and it was my first love actually I was 18 years old it was it

actually I was 18 years old it was it

actually I was 18 years old it was it was astonishing guy I couldn’t believe

was astonishing guy I couldn’t believe

was astonishing guy I couldn’t believe how great it was and we were so happy

how great it was and we were so happy

how great it was and we were so happy together

together

together there was one slight problem she was on

there was one slight problem she was on

there was one slight problem she was on a year’s placement at the university

a year’s placement at the university

a year’s placement at the university that I was at and at the end of that

that I was at and at the end of that

that I was at and at the end of that year she’d go back to where she would do

year she’d go back to where she would do

year she’d go back to where she would do the rest of her studies which was in

the rest of her studies which was in

the rest of her studies which was in Southern California this was a problem

Southern California this was a problem

Southern California this was a problem so we came up with a plan whereby I

so we came up with a plan whereby I

so we came up with a plan whereby I applied to a bunch of universities near

applied to a bunch of universities near

applied to a bunch of universities near where she would be studying in Southern

where she would be studying in Southern

where she would be studying in Southern California and to my astonishment I was

California and to my astonishment I was

California and to my astonishment I was accepted to probably the best one that I

accepted to probably the best one that I

accepted to probably the best one that I applied to a wonderful science

applied to a wonderful science

applied to a wonderful science University on the same campus as where

University on the same campus as where

University on the same campus as where she was and my university that I was

she was and my university that I was

she was and my university that I was studying out said to me sure just past

studying out said to me sure just past

studying out said to me sure just past the minimum number of courses and you

the minimum number of courses and you

the minimum number of courses and you can go and spend a year studying over

can go and spend a year studying over

can go and spend a year studying over there my parents said to me yes we’ll

there my parents said to me yes we’ll

there my parents said to me yes we’ll help you out so I was all set I just had

help you out so I was all set I just had

help you out so I was all set I just had to pass the minimum number of courses

to pass the minimum number of courses

to pass the minimum number of courses they’re my least favorite course that I

they’re my least favorite course that I

they’re my least favorite course that I was going to do was statistics I never

was going to do was statistics I never

was going to do was statistics I never really liked statistics and I remember

really liked statistics and I remember

really liked statistics and I remember the night before the statistics exam I

the night before the statistics exam I

the night before the statistics exam I was reading the textbook in my room and

was reading the textbook in my room and

was reading the textbook in my room and I was thinking this is so boring maybe

I was thinking this is so boring maybe

I was thinking this is so boring maybe if I go to the bar and I have a point of

if I go to the bar and I have a point of

if I go to the bar and I have a point of beer it will make the revision a little

beer it will make the revision a little

beer it will make the revision a little more interesting and I went to the bar

more interesting and I went to the bar

more interesting and I went to the bar and I sat at the bar I read the

and I sat at the bar I read the

and I sat at the bar I read the statistics and I drank the beer and

statistics and I drank the beer and

statistics and I drank the beer and after the first point I thought well

after the first point I thought well

after the first point I thought well really this statistics is not so

really this statistics is not so

really this statistics is not so important I’ve I’ve got it I’m good at

important I’ve I’ve got it I’m good at

important I’ve I’ve got it I’m good at there some extravagant be so I did my

there some extravagant be so I did my

there some extravagant be so I did my statistics exam let’s fast forward to a

statistics exam let’s fast forward to a

statistics exam let’s fast forward to a couple of months later when the results

couple of months later when the results

couple of months later when the results came out they let me have my results a

came out they let me have my results a

came out they let me have my results a little early they didn’t tell me what

little early they didn’t tell me what

little early they didn’t tell me what they were but the University were going

they were but the University were going

they were but the University were going to tell me if I’d passed the minimum

to tell me if I’d passed the minimum

to tell me if I’d passed the minimum amount so I could tell this wonderful

amount so I could tell this wonderful

amount so I could tell this wonderful college in

college in

college in in California just outside Los Angeles

in California just outside Los Angeles

in California just outside Los Angeles in the sunny state that I was going to

in the sunny state that I was going to

in the sunny state that I was going to be spending the next year with them and

be spending the next year with them and

be spending the next year with them and they told me they said no I’m afraid you

they told me they said no I’m afraid you

they told me they said no I’m afraid you didn’t pass a sufficient units you

didn’t pass a sufficient units you

didn’t pass a sufficient units you failed one of the units you failed the

failed one of the units you failed the

failed one of the units you failed the statistics unit and it’s it was worse

statistics unit and it’s it was worse

statistics unit and it’s it was worse than that I mean I was obviously I was

than that I mean I was obviously I was

than that I mean I was obviously I was devastated the love of my life was

devastated the love of my life was

devastated the love of my life was devastated and a few weeks later I found

devastated and a few weeks later I found

devastated and a few weeks later I found out I mean I can laugh now a few weeks

out I mean I can laugh now a few weeks

out I mean I can laugh now a few weeks later I I found out that I’d failed that

later I I found out that I’d failed that

later I I found out that I’d failed that statistics exam by 1% so it was it was

statistics exam by 1% so it was it was

statistics exam by 1% so it was it was really a devastating blow to me from

really a devastating blow to me from

really a devastating blow to me from which I thought my life would never

which I thought my life would never

which I thought my life would never recover and I I sometimes think back and

recover and I I sometimes think back and

recover and I I sometimes think back and I wonder what would have happened if I

I wonder what would have happened if I

I wonder what would have happened if I had actually just pushed that 1% further

had actually just pushed that 1% further

had actually just pushed that 1% further and flown out Los Angeles LAX would we

and flown out Los Angeles LAX would we

and flown out Los Angeles LAX would we have got married would I’ve ended up

have got married would I’ve ended up

have got married would I’ve ended up getting a degree from this with all

getting a degree from this with all

getting a degree from this with all class University then we’d have had kids

class University then we’d have had kids

class University then we’d have had kids and I’d have been living in the Sunshine

and I’d have been living in the Sunshine

and I’d have been living in the Sunshine State for the rest of my life maybe the

State for the rest of my life maybe the

State for the rest of my life maybe the funny thing is in fact I did I did think

funny thing is in fact I did I did think

funny thing is in fact I did I did think about this recently I kind of ran it

about this recently I kind of ran it

about this recently I kind of ran it through my head and I don’t think I’d be

through my head and I don’t think I’d be

through my head and I don’t think I’d be actually much happier than I am now but

actually much happier than I am now but

actually much happier than I am now but it does make me think these decisions

it does make me think these decisions

it does make me think these decisions that we make and and I suppose it’s

that we make and and I suppose it’s

that we make and and I suppose it’s interesting to think about possible

interesting to think about possible

interesting to think about possible futures possible histories alternative

futures possible histories alternative

futures possible histories alternative lines maybe you think of it as a

lines maybe you think of it as a

lines maybe you think of it as a dramatic nicety or some kind of

dramatic nicety or some kind of

dramatic nicety or some kind of philosophical thing or just an emotional

philosophical thing or just an emotional

philosophical thing or just an emotional game however what is fascinating about

game however what is fascinating about

game however what is fascinating about this is the idea of possible futures

this is the idea of possible futures

this is the idea of possible futures different futures is in fact at the

different futures is in fact at the

different futures is in fact at the heart of modern physics of the way that

heart of modern physics of the way that

heart of modern physics of the way that we view the world there are many

we view the world there are many

we view the world there are many physicists who interpret one of the core

physicists who interpret one of the core

physicists who interpret one of the core theorems one of the core parts of modern

theorems one of the core parts of modern

theorems one of the core parts of modern physics as this idea that we live in a

physics as this idea that we live in a

physics as this idea that we live in a multiverse we live in a universe in a

multiverse we live in a universe in a

multiverse we live in a universe in a multiverse of these multiple universes

multiverse of these multiple universes

multiverse of these multiple universes and that there’s somebody out there in

and that there’s somebody out there in

and that there’s somebody out there in another universe who actually did get

another universe who actually did get

another universe who actually did get that 1% and they flew out there and they

that 1% and they flew out there and they

that 1% and they flew out there and they had that life there’s another person who

had that life there’s another person who

had that life there’s another person who in another universe you’ve got that 1%

in another universe you’ve got that 1%

in another universe you’ve got that 1% and who flew out there in a plane

and who flew out there in a plane

and who flew out there in a plane crashed on the way and then there’s

crashed on the way and then there’s

crashed on the way and then there’s another one who got the 1% flew out

another one who got the 1% flew out

another one who got the 1% flew out there they did his course they got

there they did his course they got

there they did his course they got married and then she divorced him so

married and then she divorced him so

married and then she divorced him so this idea as astonishing as it seems is

this idea as astonishing as it seems is

this idea as astonishing as it seems is in fact a mainstream interpretation of

in fact a mainstream interpretation of

in fact a mainstream interpretation of this this core theory of modern physics

this this core theory of modern physics

this this core theory of modern physics quantum mechanics you know one of the

quantum mechanics you know one of the

quantum mechanics you know one of the one of the key ways that we see the

one of the key ways that we see the

one of the key ways that we see the modern world and in fact there is AI one

modern world and in fact there is AI one

modern world and in fact there is AI one of the inventions one of the most

of the inventions one of the most

of the inventions one of the most amazing theoretical inventions the last

amazing theoretical inventions the last

amazing theoretical inventions the last 30 years is the quantum computer you may

30 years is the quantum computer you may

30 years is the quantum computer you may have heard of them and the first quantum

have heard of them and the first quantum

have heard of them and the first quantum computer algorithm was developed by

computer algorithm was developed by

computer algorithm was developed by David Deutsch from Oxford and it was a

David Deutsch from Oxford and it was a

David Deutsch from Oxford and it was a simple algorithm all it did was try to

simple algorithm all it did was try to

simple algorithm all it did was try to guess a coin toss but what was

guess a coin toss but what was

guess a coin toss but what was astonishing is he proved mathematically

astonishing is he proved mathematically

astonishing is he proved mathematically that his theoretical quantum computer

that his theoretical quantum computer

that his theoretical quantum computer could do it faster than any possible

could do it faster than any possible

could do it faster than any possible standard computer that you could build

standard computer that you could build

standard computer that you could build they didn’t know how to build them at

they didn’t know how to build them at

they didn’t know how to build them at the time but they he proved it and in

the time but they he proved it and in

the time but they he proved it and in fact at the end of this paper he said

fact at the end of this paper he said

fact at the end of this paper he said something which is very interesting I’m

something which is very interesting I’m

something which is very interesting I’m going to read it to you directly because

going to read it to you directly because

going to read it to you directly because I want to get it right it’s very

I want to get it right it’s very

I want to get it right it’s very important and Barrowman this guy I mean

important and Barrowman this guy I mean

important and Barrowman this guy I mean I think his genius David Deutsch I think

I think his genius David Deutsch I think

I think his genius David Deutsch I think is a genius he’s a giant of modern

is a genius he’s a giant of modern

is a genius he’s a giant of modern physics and computing he’s the guy that

physics and computing he’s the guy that

physics and computing he’s the guy that brought two together in many ways so

brought two together in many ways so

brought two together in many ways so this at the end of his seminal paper

this at the end of his seminal paper

this at the end of his seminal paper they do include quantum parallelism a

they do include quantum parallelism a

they do include quantum parallelism a method by which certain probabilistic

method by which certain probabilistic

method by which certain probabilistic tasks can be performed faster by

tasks can be performed faster by

tasks can be performed faster by universal quantum computer than by any

universal quantum computer than by any

universal quantum computer than by any classical restriction of it the

classical restriction of it the

classical restriction of it the intuitive explanation of these

intuitive explanation of these

intuitive explanation of these properties places an intolerable strain

properties places an intolerable strain

properties places an intolerable strain on all interpretations of quantum theory

on all interpretations of quantum theory

on all interpretations of quantum theory other than Everett’s Everett Hugh

other than Everett’s Everett Hugh

other than Everett’s Everett Hugh Everett another guy here brilliant mind

Everett another guy here brilliant mind

Everett another guy here brilliant mind in 1957 Hugh Everett introduced this

in 1957 Hugh Everett introduced this

in 1957 Hugh Everett introduced this idea of the many-worlds interpretation

idea of the many-worlds interpretation

idea of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics which is

of quantum mechanics which is

of quantum mechanics which is essentially saying that every time we

essentially saying that every time we

essentially saying that every time we observe the world new universes are

observe the world new universes are

observe the world new universes are created in which all

created in which all

created in which all different possible things can happen

different possible things can happen

different possible things can happen that’s a simplification but this really

that’s a simplification but this really

that’s a simplification but this really this is a serious interpretation of

this is a serious interpretation of

this is a serious interpretation of quantum physics and there are multiple

quantum physics and there are multiple

quantum physics and there are multiple interpretations there’s another famous

interpretations there’s another famous

interpretations there’s another famous one called the Copenhagen they did a

one called the Copenhagen they did a

one called the Copenhagen they did a survey not that long ago physicists

survey not that long ago physicists

survey not that long ago physicists saying which interpretation of quantum

saying which interpretation of quantum

saying which interpretation of quantum theory

theory

theory do you believe because they all have to

do you believe because they all have to

do you believe because they all have to have an interpretation because quantum

have an interpretation because quantum

have an interpretation because quantum theory doesn’t really make a lot of

theory doesn’t really make a lot of

theory doesn’t really make a lot of sense when you compare it to how we see

sense when you compare it to how we see

sense when you compare it to how we see the world ourselves through our eyes our

the world ourselves through our eyes our

the world ourselves through our eyes our ears and so forth and they found this a

ears and so forth and they found this a

ears and so forth and they found this a significant proportion believed in the

significant proportion believed in the

significant proportion believed in the many worlds theory so Hugh Everett 1957

many worlds theory so Hugh Everett 1957

many worlds theory so Hugh Everett 1957 many worlds theory now slight diversion

many worlds theory now slight diversion

many worlds theory now slight diversion here I I I kind of after I’d done my

here I I I kind of after I’d done my

here I I I kind of after I’d done my degree which was a maths degree I then

degree which was a maths degree I then

degree which was a maths degree I then went off and I got more interested not

went off and I got more interested not

went off and I got more interested not only in the sciences and maths but also

only in the sciences and maths but also

only in the sciences and maths but also in the arts and I started to look for

in the arts and I started to look for

in the arts and I started to look for ways to combine the two and in fact what

ways to combine the two and in fact what

ways to combine the two and in fact what I do a lot of the time now is I’d I do

I do a lot of the time now is I’d I do

I do a lot of the time now is I’d I do performances where I use science in the

performances where I use science in the

performances where I use science in the music that I compose as part of the

music that I compose as part of the

music that I compose as part of the performance and I I did something for

performance and I I did something for

performance and I I did something for example with subatomic particles and I

example with subatomic particles and I

example with subatomic particles and I like to use physics I like to use these

like to use physics I like to use these

like to use physics I like to use these ideas and try and try and communicate

ideas and try and try and communicate

ideas and try and try and communicate them to people as well as create an

them to people as well as create an

them to people as well as create an exciting piece of music and it’s

exciting piece of music and it’s

exciting piece of music and it’s exciting for me now here’s the thing you

exciting for me now here’s the thing you

exciting for me now here’s the thing you may have heard of these pieces of audio

may have heard of these pieces of audio

may have heard of these pieces of audio and music where they you can listen to

and music where they you can listen to

and music where they you can listen to the Big Bang there’s something online

the Big Bang there’s something online

the Big Bang there’s something online where you can you can actually listen to

where you can you can actually listen to

where you can you can actually listen to what’s called a sonification of the

what’s called a sonification of the

what’s called a sonification of the background radiation over a certain

background radiation over a certain

background radiation over a certain period you can you can hear a section of

period you can you can hear a section of

period you can you can hear a section of the Big Bang happening over time or

the Big Bang happening over time or

the Big Bang happening over time or listen to the electromagnetic features

listen to the electromagnetic features

listen to the electromagnetic features of a star you can listen to the night

of a star you can listen to the night

of a star you can listen to the night sky this this this ability to make music

sky this this this ability to make music

sky this this this ability to make music of the universe I I think is is can be

of the universe I I think is is can be

of the universe I I think is is can be quite all inspiring when it’s done well

quite all inspiring when it’s done well

quite all inspiring when it’s done well and I asked myself this question can you

and I asked myself this question can you

and I asked myself this question can you make music with other universes we can

make music with other universes we can

make music with other universes we can do the music of this universe but can

do the music of this universe but can

do the music of this universe but can you make music with other universes can

you make music with other universes can

you make music with other universes can you make the music of the multiverse and

you make the music of the multiverse and

you make the music of the multiverse and this question of course was inspired and

this question of course was inspired and

this question of course was inspired and led been back to

led been back to

led been back to quantum theory and quantum computers

quantum theory and quantum computers

quantum theory and quantum computers which quite naturally function in this

which quite naturally function in this

which quite naturally function in this paradigm of the many-worlds

paradigm of the many-worlds

paradigm of the many-worlds interpretation and I am I did actually

interpretation and I am I did actually

interpretation and I am I did actually end up spending a fair amount of time in

end up spending a fair amount of time in

end up spending a fair amount of time in Southern California more recently I went

Southern California more recently I went

Southern California more recently I went to the University of Southern California

to the University of Southern California

to the University of Southern California where Daniel leader a professor there is

where Daniel leader a professor there is

where Daniel leader a professor there is in charge of ad wave 2x quantum computer

in charge of ad wave 2x quantum computer

in charge of ad wave 2x quantum computer because they can build these things now

because they can build these things now

because they can build these things now IBM have built a quantum computer they

IBM have built a quantum computer they

IBM have built a quantum computer they these these things exist in hardware and

these these things exist in hardware and

these these things exist in hardware and David Deutsch his time when he did that

David Deutsch his time when he did that

David Deutsch his time when he did that paper he didn’t even know if they could

paper he didn’t even know if they could

paper he didn’t even know if they could be built there now being built the

be built there now being built the

be built there now being built the d-wave is a little difference the IBM

d-wave is a little difference the IBM

d-wave is a little difference the IBM machine it’s a little different – David

machine it’s a little different – David

machine it’s a little different – David Deutsch original ideas but it’s been

Deutsch original ideas but it’s been

Deutsch original ideas but it’s been shown to use these quantum effects and

shown to use these quantum effects and

shown to use these quantum effects and in fact Google and NASA have been

in fact Google and NASA have been

in fact Google and NASA have been working with the d-wave computer these

working with the d-wave computer these

working with the d-wave computer these are astonishing machines from an

are astonishing machines from an

are astonishing machines from an engineering point of view they’re the

engineering point of view they’re the

engineering point of view they’re the actual the actual chip in a d-wave is

actual the actual chip in a d-wave is

actual the actual chip in a d-wave is only about the size of my palm the

only about the size of my palm the

only about the size of my palm the quantum element but it has to be kept at

quantum element but it has to be kept at

quantum element but it has to be kept at such a cold temperature is it’s colder

such a cold temperature is it’s colder

such a cold temperature is it’s colder than interstellar space that the

than interstellar space that the

than interstellar space that the refrigeration unit the layered

refrigeration unit the layered

refrigeration unit the layered refrigeration unit takes up a huge

refrigeration unit takes up a huge

refrigeration unit takes up a huge amount of space and then you have the

amount of space and then you have the

amount of space and then you have the these quantum effects are so delicate

these quantum effects are so delicate

these quantum effects are so delicate you can’t have any interference to the

you can’t have any interference to the

you can’t have any interference to the shielding around this refrigeration unit

shielding around this refrigeration unit

shielding around this refrigeration unit is a huge thing that’ll put a whole room

is a huge thing that’ll put a whole room

is a huge thing that’ll put a whole room aside to put to put this d-wave to Exim

aside to put to put this d-wave to Exim

aside to put to put this d-wave to Exim while I was there Daniel

while I was there Daniel

while I was there Daniel kind of I worked with him and some of

kind of I worked with him and some of

kind of I worked with him and some of his students to learn more about how to

his students to learn more about how to

his students to learn more about how to program the d-wave to x.now programming

program the d-wave to x.now programming

program the d-wave to x.now programming the d-wave it’s a little different to

the d-wave it’s a little different to

the d-wave it’s a little different to programming a normal computer what you

programming a normal computer what you

programming a normal computer what you have to do is imagine your problems as

have to do is imagine your problems as

have to do is imagine your problems as sort of maze a high dimensional abstract

sort of maze a high dimensional abstract

sort of maze a high dimensional abstract maze but if you can’t think in higher

maze but if you can’t think in higher

maze but if you can’t think in higher dimensions and abstractions just think

dimensions and abstractions just think

dimensions and abstractions just think about a maze and a ball moves through

about a maze and a ball moves through

about a maze and a ball moves through that maze um to solve the problem the

that maze um to solve the problem the

that maze um to solve the problem the ball has to kind of find its way to the

ball has to kind of find its way to the

ball has to kind of find its way to the center of the maze and there are many

center of the maze and there are many

center of the maze and there are many problems important ones for example in

problems important ones for example in

problems important ones for example in biochemistry and in machine learning

biochemistry and in machine learning

biochemistry and in machine learning which can be modeled in this way this

which can be modeled in this way this

which can be modeled in this way this sort of high dimensional abstract maze

sort of high dimensional abstract maze

sort of high dimensional abstract maze with a ball moving through it in the

with a ball moving through it in the

with a ball moving through it in the quantum version in a d-wave – acts

quantum version in a d-wave – acts

quantum version in a d-wave – acts well let’s start with the non quantum

well let’s start with the non quantum

well let’s start with the non quantum version in an you know in a normal

version in an you know in a normal

version in an you know in a normal computer with this sort of maze when the

computer with this sort of maze when the

computer with this sort of maze when the ball gets to a wall what can it do it

ball gets to a wall what can it do it

ball gets to a wall what can it do it can go that way it can go that way or it

can go that way it can go that way or it

can go that way it can go that way or it can go back the way it came that’s

can go back the way it came that’s

can go back the way it came that’s that’s the only possibilities as it

that’s the only possibilities as it

that’s the only possibilities as it searches for the solution in a quantum

searches for the solution in a quantum

searches for the solution in a quantum computer there is a universe in which

computer there is a universe in which

computer there is a universe in which that ball is on the other side of the

that ball is on the other side of the

that ball is on the other side of the wall as well as the current universe

wall as well as the current universe

wall as well as the current universe where it can’t get through the wall and

where it can’t get through the wall and

where it can’t get through the wall and this is what is thought to create the

this is what is thought to create the

this is what is thought to create the speed up in these d-wave machines the

speed up in these d-wave machines the

speed up in these d-wave machines the balls can do something called quantum

balls can do something called quantum

balls can do something called quantum tunneling quantum tunneling is actually

tunneling quantum tunneling is actually

tunneling quantum tunneling is actually quite old news any physicist now there

quite old news any physicist now there

quite old news any physicist now there be a yeah electrons can go through

be a yeah electrons can go through

be a yeah electrons can go through impossible walls I mean that’s what

impossible walls I mean that’s what

impossible walls I mean that’s what physics is like nowadays it’s just doing

physics is like nowadays it’s just doing

physics is like nowadays it’s just doing the impossible regularly and so but but

the impossible regularly and so but but

the impossible regularly and so but but but but using this in computation is a

but but using this in computation is a

but but using this in computation is a relatively new thing it took me a while

relatively new thing it took me a while

relatively new thing it took me a while to learn how to do it but I had a

to learn how to do it but I had a

to learn how to do it but I had a problem I had a specific problem that I

problem I had a specific problem that I

problem I had a specific problem that I wanted to solve

wanted to solve

wanted to solve it’s called harmonization because I’m a

it’s called harmonization because I’m a

it’s called harmonization because I’m a I’m a I guess you could call me a

I’m a I guess you could call me a

I’m a I guess you could call me a computer musician I’m I look at how we

computer musician I’m I look at how we

computer musician I’m I look at how we can use computers to solve various

can use computers to solve various

can use computers to solve various musical problems harmonization if I sang

musical problems harmonization if I sang

musical problems harmonization if I sang you a little tune now which I’m not

you a little tune now which I’m not

you a little tune now which I’m not going to but if I did that would be the

going to but if I did that would be the

going to but if I did that would be the melody if somebody strolled out with a

melody if somebody strolled out with a

melody if somebody strolled out with a guitar strumming away which they won’t

guitar strumming away which they won’t

guitar strumming away which they won’t don’t worry that would be the Harmony

don’t worry that would be the Harmony

don’t worry that would be the Harmony underneath those chords so the problem I

underneath those chords so the problem I

underneath those chords so the problem I wanted to program on the d-wave was I

wanted to program on the d-wave was I

wanted to program on the d-wave was I send the d-wave a note and it sends me

send the d-wave a note and it sends me

send the d-wave a note and it sends me back a chord to harmonize that note I

back a chord to harmonize that note I

back a chord to harmonize that note I did it I wrote the program I took a

did it I wrote the program I took a

did it I wrote the program I took a little time to think that way but I did

little time to think that way but I did

little time to think that way but I did it and what I could do is I could

it and what I could do is I could

it and what I could do is I could essentially I could just from my laptop

essentially I could just from my laptop

essentially I could just from my laptop shoot off a note from my bedroom or from

shoot off a note from my bedroom or from

shoot off a note from my bedroom or from my office off it goes to Southern

my office off it goes to Southern

my office off it goes to Southern California the d-wave does its bit and

California the d-wave does its bit and

California the d-wave does its bit and it wouldn’t just send me back one chord

it wouldn’t just send me back one chord

it wouldn’t just send me back one chord a quantum computer it’s not the same as

a quantum computer it’s not the same as

a quantum computer it’s not the same as norm commutes they send you multiple

norm commutes they send you multiple

norm commutes they send you multiple solutions and so it would send me back

solutions and so it would send me back

solutions and so it would send me back multiple chords now these chords I spoke

multiple chords now these chords I spoke

multiple chords now these chords I spoke to the professor about this as their as

to the professor about this as their as

to the professor about this as their as their if you think about it is this D

their if you think about it is this D

their if you think about it is this D wave is doing its calculations it’s it’s

wave is doing its calculations it’s it’s

wave is doing its calculations it’s it’s moving through the multiverse

moving through the multiverse

moving through the multiverse and these chords can be viewed as kind

and these chords can be viewed as kind

and these chords can be viewed as kind of chords coming from different parts of

of chords coming from different parts of

of chords coming from different parts of the multiverse from different universes

the multiverse from different universes

the multiverse from different universes I thought what would it sound like if I

I thought what would it sound like if I

I thought what would it sound like if I took so I send it a c-note an e note the

took so I send it a c-note an e note the

took so I send it a c-note an e note the same EE note sends me back three four

same EE note sends me back three four

same EE note sends me back three four five it could send me an infinite number

five it could send me an infinite number

five it could send me an infinite number of cause means an infinite number of

of cause means an infinite number of

of cause means an infinite number of universes presumably in the multiverse

universes presumably in the multiverse

universes presumably in the multiverse sends me back a bunch of chords I play

sends me back a bunch of chords I play

sends me back a bunch of chords I play them all together spread them across the

them all together spread them across the

them all together spread them across the octaves so they don’t clash as much and

octaves so they don’t clash as much and

octaves so they don’t clash as much and I remember doing this for a melody the

I remember doing this for a melody the

I remember doing this for a melody the first time and it was it was it

first time and it was it was it

first time and it was it was it astonished me it felt so profound

astonished me it felt so profound

astonished me it felt so profound because I I felt I was listening to

because I I felt I was listening to

because I I felt I was listening to music across multiple universes I then

music across multiple universes I then

music across multiple universes I then did a real-time version what I could

did a real-time version what I could

did a real-time version what I could kind of send notes and and and get the

kind of send notes and and and get the

kind of send notes and and and get the chords back in real time so I was

chords back in real time so I was

chords back in real time so I was actually experiencing these quantum

actually experiencing these quantum

actually experiencing these quantum effects happening then the chords being

effects happening then the chords being

effects happening then the chords being sent back to me playing them and I as I

sent back to me playing them and I as I

sent back to me playing them and I as I was listening and this this profound

was listening and this this profound

was listening and this this profound thoughts going through my mind and I

thoughts going through my mind and I

thoughts going through my mind and I thought is this really is this really

thought is this really is this really

thought is this really is this really the music of the multiverse I’m here to

the music of the multiverse I’m here to

the music of the multiverse I’m here to tell you tonight it really could be the

tell you tonight it really could be the

tell you tonight it really could be the music of the multiverse this this is

music of the multiverse this this is

music of the multiverse this this is this is the state of physics at the

this is the state of physics at the

this is the state of physics at the moment and the interpretations of

moment and the interpretations of

moment and the interpretations of quantum mechanics these as it is these

quantum mechanics these as it is these

quantum mechanics these as it is these chords are coming from different

chords are coming from different

chords are coming from different universes so I made a performance with

universes so I made a performance with

universes so I made a performance with it and that’s I’m going to play you that

it and that’s I’m going to play you that

it and that’s I’m going to play you that performance it was at Port Elliott last

performance it was at Port Elliott last

performance it was at Port Elliott last year and I actually wrote a piece for

year and I actually wrote a piece for

year and I actually wrote a piece for mezzo soprano and for d-wave and my

mezzo soprano and for d-wave and my

mezzo soprano and for d-wave and my laptop that was sending me the notes off

laptop that was sending me the notes off

laptop that was sending me the notes off to the d-wave but the bit that’s the

to the d-wave but the bit that’s the

to the d-wave but the bit that’s the part of it that’s my favorite part is

part of it that’s my favorite part is

part of it that’s my favorite part is the middle part where in fact the mezzo

the middle part where in fact the mezzo

the middle part where in fact the mezzo soprano sits down and what happens is my

soprano sits down and what happens is my

soprano sits down and what happens is my laptop it feeds some notes out to the

laptop it feeds some notes out to the

laptop it feeds some notes out to the d-wave it gets some chords back it

d-wave it gets some chords back it

d-wave it gets some chords back it builds this mega chord this kind of

builds this mega chord this kind of

builds this mega chord this kind of multiverse chord that spreads across

multiverse chord that spreads across

multiverse chord that spreads across these universes and then it feeds the

these universes and then it feeds the

these universes and then it feeds the sound from that into itself and back out

sound from that into itself and back out

sound from that into itself and back out to the d-wave so the whole thing the

to the d-wave so the whole thing the

to the d-wave so the whole thing the singers sitting down the D way is kind

singers sitting down the D way is kind

singers sitting down the D way is kind of feeding off itself and just strolling

of feeding off itself and just strolling

of feeding off itself and just strolling through the multiverse bringing these

through the multiverse bringing these

through the multiverse bringing these chords back

chords back

chords back the actual piece you’ll hear it is it

the actual piece you’ll hear it is it

the actual piece you’ll hear it is it starts you’ll hear that it starts fairly

starts you’ll hear that it starts fairly

starts you’ll hear that it starts fairly quietly and then it gets bigger and

quietly and then it gets bigger and

quietly and then it gets bigger and bigger as I add more and more of these

bigger as I add more and more of these

bigger as I add more and more of these chords being sent back in theory as I

chords being sent back in theory as I

chords being sent back in theory as I say it could have an infinite number of

say it could have an infinite number of

say it could have an infinite number of chords and I had to cut it off at some

chords and I had to cut it off at some

chords and I had to cut it off at some point because my laptop was crashing

point because my laptop was crashing

point because my laptop was crashing from the sheer size of the chords that I

from the sheer size of the chords that I

from the sheer size of the chords that I was building from the quantum computer

was building from the quantum computer

was building from the quantum computer well I’ll give it a play now

and I’d like to finish on that

and I’d like to finish on that [Applause]
