My name is Jeremy Sanders,
At the age of 29,
Three months from now, I will utter my last breath.
At least, that’s what I’ve been told throughout my youth years.
This fact has had a clear impact on my life.
I live with a chronic and fatal pulmonary disease called cystic fibrosis
And an essential part of life with cystic fibrosis
Is to know that my time here, on this earth,
More limited than any ordinary person.
At the age of 29, I know perfectly well
I only have so many long, deep breaths.
My lungs now work 60% efficiently, which is not bad.
You know, I learned in high school that 60% is a degree of success.
But things can get worse.
But for a moment, let us think about what it means
When you make 60% of your ability to breathe.
In fact, you know what?
Try it with me.
all of you. Take a full breath.
And they expelled him completely.
(Exhales)
Now let’s call it your 100%
Let us do it again. The same is full for inside.
Same for outside.
Feeling good, right?
Let’s discount about 50% -50% in your inspiration.
Ready? They sniffed.
They stopped.
Bring out the whole soul
(Exhales)
Let us get another 50%. They sniffed.
They stopped.
Bring out the whole soul.
Let us deduct another 10%. Inhaled 40%.
They stopped.
Bring out the whole soul.
Inhale 30%.
They stopped.
Full exhalation.
Again, 30%.
Full exhalation.
Now they inhaled 20%.
They stopped.
Full exhalation
Well, breathe smoothly.
Oov.
During the past 10 years or so
My lungs were so slow and steadily deteriorating.
Statistically, this deterioration in lung function
Will lead to my death.
For most of you who do not have a fatal lung disease,
This does not concern them very much.
But, which relates to them strongly
It is something that none of those in this room can do
Escape from it, is something we all share
the death.
All of you will die
Whoever you know,
Everyone you loved
All of them will die.
Your mother will die.
Your father will die.
Your daughter, your son will die.
Your husband, your wife,
All your friends, all of them.
As with me, every one of you, with every breath you breathe,
Get closer to inhaling your last breath.
But this should not be surprising.
All of us, at some point in our lives, will realize that life has an end.
Because your imminent end is often beyond your control
As if in the distant future
There is no point in going into it.
This means that you all accept the fact that you will die,
But today, I challenge you
To accept this fact with a warm welcome.
If you can reap the lamp,
Instead of offering you three wishes,
This giver gave you the opportunity to know when your expiration date will be,
Will you accept the offer?
Nineteen years ago, I met this genie,
He did not give me the opportunity to choose.
This was in 1998.
I was that stupid 10-year-old child exploring the world,
My life was about four important priorities:
Frozen chips for breakfast, lunch and dinner,
Trying to edit “Smok” in the second part of the game “Mortal Kombat”
Trying to convince my parents
To allow me to spend enough time on Sunday to watch The X Files,
And, of course, the wrestling program “The World Racing Generation”
(Laughter)
What a life, right?
Well, who’s joking with?
This summarizes my life as it is now.
The only difference is, when I was ten, I was not aware
Cystic Fibrosis is a fatal disease.
For me, it was just something that bothered me every day
General pain in my body,
Otherwise, life was good
Until I met that Genie.
He introduced himself to me
In a booklet entitled “All About Cystic Fibrosis.”
In the booklet,
I did not know that this sentence would make a difference in my life
In a way I have never imagined.
The sentence says: “Cystic fibrosis is a deadly genetic disease.”
Now, for a ten-year-old child, an invincible god in Mortal Kombat,
I knew exactly what a deadly word meant.
It was the next part of the sentence
He slapped me hard.
Life expectancy of a person suffering from cystic fibrosis
Is 30 years old
that moment…
It was a turning point.
Everything I thought I knew turned upside down.
My ten-year-old mind met this information by thinking that,
“Everything I’ve done in my life, I can only do it twice more.”
This moment when you realize that death is something very real and very frightening
Not a rare moment.
I am sure that most of those in this room have been touched by death in this way.
It may have been the result of the death of a pet in childhood
Sudden or unexpected death of an individual from a family or friend.
Perhaps one of you is near death.
Or maybe not.
You may have reached that stage in your life
Without facing the inevitability of death.
But, when confronted with the painful truth of death,
Each of us deals with this information in its own way.
For me, at ten, I met her with fear,
Anger,
rejection,
And convergence.
It is rare to accept the concept of death with satisfaction and with open arms.
So when I was thinking, you know,
All I wanted to tell you about today,
I decided to travel a little over time
And to return for years the small:
How you feel about
The idea of living a shorter life span?
And I’m really lucky because I had that kind of proud parents
Who refuse to throw any of my old schoolwork
So I was able to extract this gem.
This is an excerpt from a biography I wrote when I was 16 yrs old.
Part IV: My Future
When it comes to thinking about my future and what I want to do in my life
With regard to marriage and childbearing,
I do not know exactly what to think about.
About 40% of cystic fibrosis children live beyond 18 years of age.
The average age of those who live up to the age of majority is 30 to 33 years.
If you think about it, what is the idea of getting married?
If I live for only a few years during this marriage.
The idea of having a child is useless
Unless I want them to live more than half their lives without a father.
It is hard to think about these things,
She felt useless to me.
Now, I know what you’re thinking,
“What a queen of drama!”
Right?
Well, let us move quickly to this day, 13 years later,
My view of life with cystic fibrosis,
My perspective of death has changed dramatically.
Some may be surprised to hear this,
But I can honestly stand here today without a doubt to say
Cystic fibrosis is one of the best things that happened to me.
That sentence,
“Cystic fibrosis is a deadly genetic disease”
Bear fear
And rejection
And anger.
But it has become a powerful source of inspiration;
It leads me.
You see, my faith in the inevitable has made my eyes fully open
Which fundamentally changed the meaning of living day by day.
moment by moment.
Cystic fibrosis has given me
The incentive is not only to accept my artistry
But to accept it with a welcoming chest.
And so on
This strange feeling comes with freedom.
I can take that freedom and enrich it in my life
To live as if nothing is impossible.
I can see the concept of great and frightening death
Instead of fearing him,
I use it as a way to motivate myself to live my life to the fullest.
I really think this article
Has played a big role in changing my point of view.
As soon as I could take the words and write them on paper
I was finally able to say “Yes,
I really accept the fact that I will die, “
But this acceptance is filled with fear.
At that time, I had two options:
To allow fear …
Or use it as a means of seeking.
“Fear of death stems from fear of life
A man who lives to the fullest is ready to die at any time. “
I just invented it now.
I’m not kidding. It’s an argument for Mark Twain.
I love this saying; love it. Let me tell you again.
“Fear of death stems from fear of life.
A man who lives to the fullest is ready to die at any time. “
I really like that saying
Because I felt like it was a reflection of the trip that I was in.
I’m more than proud
Let me be here today and tell you that at the age of 29,
The age I did not live until I told him as my father was told,
Has accomplished a lot of amazing things.
I was in advance for my children’s television program on the CBS,
It was named “Arzuka”!
Which was broadcast in 50 countries around the world.
Because of my work, I have won the Jemna Award
And the Canadian Screen Award.
She made a documentary film where she followed astronaut Chris Hadfield around the world.
We went to Russia and Kazakhstan.
I watched him practice
For his mission to lead the International Space Station.
I have lived one of the dreams of my old life.
I was killed in a horror film, and I was pulled by a space object.
It was something amazing.
She went on a three-month white-water rowing trip.
I live outside the tent. He was hunted by hawks from 40-foot rivers in Mexico.
Something I did not think I had the physical ability to do.
I have actually fallen in love and got married.
She is nice.
(Laughter)
With my favorite friends,
We launched an internationally known sound bulletin called Sikpoy.
We achieve 1.5 million downloads per year.
We all speak with thousands of people
About my experience of living with cystic fibrosis,
And with others living with chronic or fatal illness
To remove the stigma of the disease
And to build a community and provide support to those patients.
In the middle of this whirlwind of crazy events,
I think I have achieved my greatest achievement.
I am only eighteen years old,
I got the Employee of the Month award at an adult video store
For my ability to increase sales of better lubricant oil.
(Laughter)
My mother felt ashamed.
(Laughter)
This is not a joke.
(Laughter)
How did you get here?
Right?
How I turned from that troubled teenager
To the successful young oil merchant you see before you now?
(Laughter)
That’s because I honestly believed in the end date.
I have lived my life
As if it were close to completion three months from now.
I have tried to live the greatest amount of life in my 30 years.
Therefore, from the statistical point of view
When I must knock the door of death,
No matter how close I am to death,
I can stand up,
And consider everything I did and say,
“I did it.”
I have stopped fearing life.
So I lived a life without fear of death.
I am the man I have lived to the fullest.
This is the nice part of all this.
But you do not need to be diagnosed with a fatal disease
To embrace this view of life.
As I said earlier,
“You will all die.”
Just like me, all of you have an expiration date
Although your history can be less clear.
But what if not?
Put your end date now.
How much do you expect you to live?
Sixty years?
Mm.
For most of you, maybe not.
What about 50 years?
Thirty years?
ten?
What if you have five years left?
What if three months remain?
The amazing part of it all is that no one, including me,
Has an idea of the real number.
We hear people say all the time,
“Yes, I could die today.
I could walk out and hit a truck. “
Fabulous.
For this, how do you want to live
In those moments between now and face that bus?
Do you want to live these moments with a little more sympathy?
More courage?
More fragility?
More love?
What about more laughter?
My name is Jeremy Sanders.
And three months from now
I will be 30,
After I have got the greatest amount of life,
After inhaling “my last breath,”
All that after that moment is extra time.
What about you?
Start counting your hours today and ask yourself,
“How do you want to end your life?”
Thank
(Applause) (Cheers)
