Mad Science: MELTING Metal with Sunlight

Boys look at that is absurd.

How are my friends?

Welcome back

today we are outside

The sun is shining and there is no cloud in the air

The sun is burning brightly, so I took my sunburner …

because there was a reaction to use it

I used Christi’s reaction because she wondered if your metal could melt with the giant magnifying glass

We are going to try it now because there is no better time than today.

For the metal smelting experiment, I took 3 different metals to work with

The first is: tin.

from the video with Collins Key

where we melted the tin to make fidget spinners

I also have Aluminum “muffins” that we have obtained in the melting of cans

one also we use a “muffin” of copper. we made this by melting bullet shells.

the melting point of these metals is very different

tin has a melting point of 250 degrees Celsius.

the aluminum melts around 660 degrees Celsius

and the copper melts around 900/950 degrees Celsius

I have said this and Celsius for my international fans. (thanks)

I start with the tin fidget spinner that I made with Collin

we keep them directly in the sunlight and then we see how long it takes before it is melted

if that happens

some of you will recognize the sunburn

this is a lens that came off a huge TV, and works like a big magnifying glass

and that ensures that the light is combined in a strong laser beam

if we spray a little water on it

then we can see where the focus is

the separate thing is that I can keep my finger 2 cm away without feeling anything

but if something comes in, it will burn immediately

because that focus is about 1100 degrees Celsius

what should be hot enough to melt metal, how crazy is that

Okay, now that we know exactly where the focus is

let’s take one of our metals, let’s start with tin.

and then let us keep it at the focal point

Okay, our focal point is exactly there

if I spray water on it you can see it

it is thick and very thin here

and with the thin piece we want to place our metal.

watch your eyes, because this is going to be bright

I try to find the focal point again

I can see a piece of the metal melting there

if you see at the bottom you can see it melting

I have to keep this focused

oh, wow a piece of metal just dripped on the floor

guys, look at this. this is idiotic. simply keeping it in the sunlight has melted.

with

Okay, this apparently wants to melt with sunlight without any problem

I think I’ll take all my Tin spinners

and they all melt in the muffin pan

OK, guys, I just placed a shelf on the sunburner

I have put the spinners in the tray

and if I put it on the shelf it should be exactly in focus

in this way I can keep them stable in one place

so the sun can work completely

without being shaken in the focus

we will see

solar power, do your work

this seems to be the perfect focal point

in a few seconds you can already see that the tin is beginning to melt

melting metal with sunlight

and soon too

you have to see, it just drips away

as if it is nothing

and this is only solar energy

you can see the bath of molten metal at the bottom

it goes so fast that I want to add a piece of tin

I’m going to add this piece of tin

this we have not melted ton I was with Collin

this gives us a complete “muffin”

if the sun melts then we are talking about the same power as my gas burner

you can see exactly where the sun hits it

and it immediately begins to melt

we are now melting metal with the sun

so cool

I have to keep it in the fire for maximum heat

but it keeps all the metal liquid

it is still molten tin on the bottom

It works

in fact, now that I have thrown in the whole thing, it melts like an ice cube that melts

wherever I look at the sunlight

I can decide where it starts to melt

it has almost completely melted

this is hot blood

yes, it is completely melted

it is completely liquid

I take off the “skin”

and then I can let it cool down

melted tin, from the sun!

what I am wondering now

how would sunlight react to aluminum

a small update, I am confused by the results

I had hoped that sunlight would melt aluminum

but we have been here for the past 20 minutes

and the focus has changed over and over again, but nothing is happening

I’m sure this muffin is hot now

but it has not been melted in any form yet, and I do not know how long that will take

but the tin has become completely hard

and we can turn it over and knock it out of the tray

but happens with the aluminum

nothing at all

and if we can not melt aluminum, then we can not melt copper

it will be hard enough to melt it

it is only the amount that we want to melt

we now have a lot of tin

but there is a point in the middle where it is getting very hot now

but nothing else happens

it does not rise hard enough, and if aluminum does not melt copper then it does not melt at all

I’m sure this thing is hot

do you have to listen to what kind of sound it makes when I throw water on it

that was extreme

it even looked like it was about to melt

and maybe after 10-15 minutes it would have melted

but it is in any case not useful to melt metal

let’s look at the tin

the interesting thing about the tin is that it has all these bubbles at the bottom

I wonder where they came from

the bubbles are completely rounded off

it is also not really smooth at the top

it looks like craters on the moon

the sunburner becomes hot enough to melt tin

it becomes almost warm enough to melt aluminum

and it does not get hot enough to melt copper in large quantities

but you can melt a bullet sleeve

let’s try that as the final project

Okay, watch out that I do not come into focus with my head

that would be crucial

where is the focal point? here about

are my brains fooling me now or has it started to smoke?

that is a good sign, it is also changing color

I’m going to play with the focal point

it seems like it should be here

it creates a white layer on the outside

there is probably a reaction taking place

it is probably very hot but I do not see any smoke or anything

I think it’s great when it comes to melting

look it is so hot that it burns the wood

it is in any case hot

it leaves branding on the wood

but it is not melting yet

I have to be honest guys, I had expected this shell

would melt

I think it has not started to melt because the sun is too far below

we should have done this earlier

but it is in any case so hot that if you put it on wood that burns the wood

that is still very hot, even though we did not get it melted

and I think that’s good to know, because you’re not always going to have perfect conditions

a brief summary of what we have tried today

we went to see if sunlight could melt metal, we used 3 types of metal

copper, tin and aluminum

what we discovered today was separate, tin melted immediately

when we tried the aluminum muffin we put it

for 15 minutes in the sun, while there were no visible differences

it was hot enough to boil the water until it even evaporated

but it has not melted

whether or not it would melt after a while, who would say it

the reason we did not get the muffin melted

is not the temperature, but the quantity

and if aluminum would not work

then copper would not melt at all, but we did try a shell

and in some circumstances, we should have succeeded

I managed to melt screws, so I was wondering why we would not try a brass tube

anyway, it is good to see that it does not always work

the place of the sun, the season and the temperature

are things that play a role as to whether or not it works

it is possible to use metals as tin and probably also gallium

but with metals such as

aluminum, copper and gold, I do not think it will work

but it was still fun to try

and we have learned something new today
