I Am Not a Number: A Refugee’s Tale | Nujeen Mustafa | TEDxExeter

Translator: Sameh Rabaaoui Checker: Nada Qanbar

When I first learned that I would speak here today,

“What will I say to the audience in England?” She asked.

I love Charles Dickens! “

(Laughter)

Then I thought it would be a bad idea. You’d better start something else.

So, I’ll start with information.

Information is not happy.

Did you know that one in every 113 people in the world is now a refugee?

Oh, how much I hate that word!

Because it word lost its meaning.

It has become a synonym for plague and a flock of birds

A disease that is feared to spread here in Europe.

We are just a number on the news.

But I’m not a figure

“I am a human being, my name is Nujin,

Someone did not go to school until age 17.

I think to live in an apartment on the fifth floor

With no elevator does not make living an easy task

(Laughter)

So I kept reading the books and gathering the facts.

I arrived in the UK a few days ago.

I really love her.

I visited Buckingham Palace, London Eye and the Albert Monument.

But it made me remember that we also had everything.

Old Market, Old City and Castle.

And now, all destroyed.

I considered myself lucky because I left early

I did not see the destruction of the city that I loved.

But it turned out that my departure was only the beginning of a long journey.

When I left for Turkey I was happy.

We got rid of sting, air strikes and cluster bombs.

Most importantly, no more power outages so I can watch my favorite TV shows.

(Laughter)

But as hope of returning home slowly faded,

I started my future picture, sitting there doing nothing,

You scare me.

So when I got a chance to come to Europe,

I was very happy

Like my favorite princess of the story of the beautiful beast,

I’ve always wanted adventure in “somewhere in the wide world.”

But my adventure does not involve any speaker cup or candlesticks sings,

Or anything [such].

All I heard was the controversy of our group

About whether we should get a wheelchair or not.

Suddenly,

I found myself on a rubber boat,

It became a fine line between death and a new life for me.

But with prayers and weeping, we survived.

We felt we were the happiest people on earth.

But there is still a long way to go

Of arrests, interrogations, checkpoints and police stations.

Getting to Germany after passing through all this

Makes you feel like you are the main hero in a movie,

Where I won in every challenge.

But our major battles were still ahead,

When you reach Europe,

Be aware

You are now the nightmare that haunts every decision maker in Europe.

For people, everything you do, you yourself,

Strange and alien and unfamiliar.

So we end up dangling in a vicious circle, trying to merge.

Do you realize the difficulty of trying to read “German mail?”

Do you realize how embarrassing it is?

Try to remember these German words to officials?

How embarrassing it is to eat with the fork and the knife

After eating all your life with a spoon.

You might ask

“Why does this girl tell us this depressing story?”

Well, I hope you all leave today

Taking these few things into consideration.

First: I am not a figure, but a human being.

Second: I did not come here because I wanted it,

But because I had to.

Third:

The difference is not dangerous.

Fourth and most important:

We need your sympathy as much as we need your shelter.

So, why is this so important to me?

Why do I care?

Because believe me,

The feeling that you are an unwelcome guest is one of the harshest feelings.

(clap)
