The Intellectual 21st century woman | Anna Ray Ziegler | TEDxColumbus

I studied in a girls’ school where women were taught to learn all the fields,

Especially mathematics and science.

But I do not like mathematics and science in particular.

I realized at school

For me, being smart means I get A grade

In mathematics and science

Or, I will not be really smart.

So I decided to do my best in these materials,

And to be skilled in it.

And then, I began to hate school,

And all the fun I felt, left me suddenly.

I began to realize

There is nothing I would like to do with mathematics and science.

The worst:

I hated all math and science, I started to love history and literature.

Shortly thereafter,

But I felt

That my achievements with these articles, and how they are highlighted

It was not equal to the activities of my friends in STEM stakes

This is the problem: I tend to – as do many of my colleagues –

To the material hierarchy,

Some at the top of the pyramid and some below,

And that it is necessary to be superior to them to become smart.

So being smart is an elusive thing

For those of us who do not understand atomic quantum theory,

What it means and how it occurs.

But it is important to follow your passion,

Because I learned that if you mold yourself, you will lose it.

Imagine a world in which women decide

They do not want to study these areas at all.

Imagine people who could not be seen in our society.

Imagine if Maya Angelo decided that her poems were not distinctive,

You can not change the world, and no one would have thought of anything about it.

So I decided to be a doctor.

Imagine if Harper Lee did not decide to make up a novel

She left the world without “killing a simulated bird.”

So I began to realize that following my passion was important

Because no one wonders if these women women thinkers,

If I do not have to wonder before I test this?

In the last two years,

There were 9% fewer women going to the field of humanities,

I mean, get degrees in this area.

This decrease is not relative

Not as angry as the separation between women and men in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,

Only 29% of the students in these disciplines are women.

This is the problem,

It is the work of teachers to push women to these areas

Because nothing can be done.

But not at the expense of other materials because those are equally important,

They are more important to some people.

At the end of the school year, we were all in the sports club

Let’s talk and get to know the students in the last year.

Awards, about ten awards,

Less than half of them for human materials.

Those achievements are spectacular and worthy of recognition

Because there are many amazing students in my school.

But can you cram into my mind, or my colleagues

That the scale of intelligence is math and science?

If this is the case, then I and my colleagues lack intelligence?

So I started to learn

Finding approval is not what you need to do

And that women are notables in the twenty-first century

Are those that follow their passion.

thank you

(clap)
