with something we always like to start

with something we always like to start with is kind of just the origin stories

with is kind of just the origin stories

with is kind of just the origin stories of the people that we interview so I’d

of the people that we interview so I’d

of the people that we interview so I’d like to know how you first came to

like to know how you first came to

like to know how you first came to follow music as your path music was kind

follow music as your path music was kind

follow music as your path music was kind of always a part of my life I think

of always a part of my life I think

of always a part of my life I think probably first started getting really

probably first started getting really

probably first started getting really serious about it when I was in high

serious about it when I was in high

serious about it when I was in high school joined a jazz choir that did all

school joined a jazz choir that did all

school joined a jazz choir that did all these Frank Sinatra George Gershwin

these Frank Sinatra George Gershwin

these Frank Sinatra George Gershwin medleys before that point I loved going

medleys before that point I loved going

medleys before that point I loved going to musicals with my parents and you know

to musicals with my parents and you know

to musicals with my parents and you know I Andrew Lloyd Webber and that world of

I Andrew Lloyd Webber and that world of

I Andrew Lloyd Webber and that world of musicals is really exciting to me

around the age of 1516 I just became

around the age of 1516 I just became obsessed with discovering new bands I

obsessed with discovering new bands I

obsessed with discovering new bands I got really into experimental music and

got really into experimental music and

got really into experimental music and Miles Davis and a lot of sort of prog

Miles Davis and a lot of sort of prog

Miles Davis and a lot of sort of prog rock bands and around that same time I

rock bands and around that same time I

rock bands and around that same time I was picking up guitar thing to pursue

was picking up guitar thing to pursue

was picking up guitar thing to pursue music as a Korean and then before I went

music as a Korean and then before I went

music as a Korean and then before I went to university I got offered my contract

to university I got offered my contract

to university I got offered my contract with my manager to move to Melbourne and

with my manager to move to Melbourne and

with my manager to move to Melbourne and start work on a debut record so yeah

start work on a debut record so yeah

start work on a debut record so yeah that was around the age of 17 since then

that was around the age of 17 since then

that was around the age of 17 since then you know I worked on it for three and a

you know I worked on it for three and a

you know I worked on it for three and a half years and I’m 22 now I took a while

how would you describe the music scene

how would you describe the music scene in New Zealand well I live in Melbourne

in New Zealand well I live in Melbourne

in New Zealand well I live in Melbourne now I’ve been there for four years but

now I’ve been there for four years but

now I’ve been there for four years but growing up in New Zealand obviously you

growing up in New Zealand obviously you

growing up in New Zealand obviously you know nature and landscape was a big part

know nature and landscape was a big part

know nature and landscape was a big part of my upbringing I look very close to a

of my upbringing I look very close to a

of my upbringing I look very close to a river would always go down there to

river would always go down there to

river would always go down there to write music and the scene itself was was

write music and the scene itself was was

write music and the scene itself was was actually really great because we’re so

actually really great because we’re so

actually really great because we’re so isolated from the rest of the world I

isolated from the rest of the world I

isolated from the rest of the world I think it pushes people to sometimes work

think it pushes people to sometimes work

think it pushes people to sometimes work harder to create something unique and

harder to create something unique and

harder to create something unique and original it’s been a lot of great bands

original it’s been a lot of great bands

original it’s been a lot of great bands to come out of New Zealand I think just

to come out of New Zealand I think just

to come out of New Zealand I think just the population size makes it a little

the population size makes it a little

the population size makes it a little difficult sometimes to progress so

difficult sometimes to progress so

difficult sometimes to progress so Melbourne was really fantastic as a city

Melbourne was really fantastic as a city

Melbourne was really fantastic as a city for me to grow in as a musician

now you’ve mentioned quite a few

now you’ve mentioned quite a few influences already but I’d love to hear

influences already but I’d love to hear

influences already but I’d love to hear who

who

who if you could pick like your number one

if you could pick like your number one

if you could pick like your number one icon or Idol who would it be it’s really

icon or Idol who would it be it’s really

icon or Idol who would it be it’s really difficult because there’s so many

difficult because there’s so many

difficult because there’s so many different artists that have influenced

different artists that have influenced

different artists that have influenced different aspects of my music you know I

different aspects of my music you know I

different aspects of my music you know I think you know melodically someone like

think you know melodically someone like

think you know melodically someone like Rufus Wainwright actually would be a

Rufus Wainwright actually would be a

Rufus Wainwright actually would be a huge influence on me and and Prince and

huge influence on me and and Prince and

huge influence on me and and Prince and Michael Jackson but you know

Michael Jackson but you know

Michael Jackson but you know rhythmically I actually get a lot of

rhythmically I actually get a lot of

rhythmically I actually get a lot of influence from bands like battles up in

influence from bands like battles up in

influence from bands like battles up in New York or or more Latin kind of bands

New York or or more Latin kind of bands

New York or or more Latin kind of bands even you know I mentioned Miles Davis or

even you know I mentioned Miles Davis or

even you know I mentioned Miles Davis or some heavy metal you know I listen to it

some heavy metal you know I listen to it

some heavy metal you know I listen to it for the rhythms and actually get a lot

for the rhythms and actually get a lot

for the rhythms and actually get a lot of inspiration from that so it is hard

of inspiration from that so it is hard

of inspiration from that so it is hard to sum it up into just one person

people like to make comparisons

people like to make comparisons obviously how do you feel about being

obviously how do you feel about being

obviously how do you feel about being compared to people like Bjork or

compared to people like Bjork or

compared to people like Bjork or Florence and the Machine or something

Florence and the Machine or something

Florence and the Machine or something like that

like that

like that well first odd it’s super flattering

well first odd it’s super flattering

well first odd it’s super flattering that people would you know put me in the

that people would you know put me in the

that people would you know put me in the company of artists like that especially

company of artists like that especially

company of artists like that especially artists who have made a point of kind of

artists who have made a point of kind of

artists who have made a point of kind of keeping their artistic integrity and

keeping their artistic integrity and

keeping their artistic integrity and being kind of fearless and what they do

I mean I personally don’t think my music

I mean I personally don’t think my music sounds a lot like those artists but in

sounds a lot like those artists but in

sounds a lot like those artists but in some respects I have taken influence

some respects I have taken influence

some respects I have taken influence from what they represent and kind of

from what they represent and kind of

from what they represent and kind of their aesthetic so I mean I just think

their aesthetic so I mean I just think

their aesthetic so I mean I just think it’s it’s nice to be compared to artists

it’s it’s nice to be compared to artists

it’s it’s nice to be compared to artists that at least of my that’s yeah plus I

that at least of my that’s yeah plus I

that at least of my that’s yeah plus I mean they’re all pretty strong women as

mean they’re all pretty strong women as

mean they’re all pretty strong women as well

do you try to kind of blend the old and

do you try to kind of blend the old and the new in terms of your sound I think

the new in terms of your sound I think

the new in terms of your sound I think that’s just um inevitable because I

that’s just um inevitable because I

that’s just um inevitable because I listen to a lot of old and a lot of you

listen to a lot of old and a lot of you

listen to a lot of old and a lot of you you know I think whatever you’re feeding

you know I think whatever you’re feeding

you know I think whatever you’re feeding your musical brain with is going to sort

your musical brain with is going to sort

your musical brain with is going to sort of subconsciously permeate whatever you

of subconsciously permeate whatever you

of subconsciously permeate whatever you create it’s not an awfully conscious

create it’s not an awfully conscious

create it’s not an awfully conscious thing it’s just I think what comes

thing it’s just I think what comes

thing it’s just I think what comes through yeah
