Where did sex come from? | Vivien Cumming | TEDxUniversityofMacedonia

Translator: rashed khaled

Have you ever thought about the origination

Sleep, food and even sex?

Maybe you’re thinking, yes that’s obvious!

But in fact is this obvious?

Where do these acts come from?

lets see.

How many of you have thought of sex today?

(Laughter)

I see some hands.

Do not be shy,

I’m the one standing in front of you called (Vivan Coming)

You talk about the origin of sex.

(Laughter)

Seriously, though, sex is everywhere.

Just look at the animal kingdom,

For us, like animals,

Often the initial desire is not even a conscious mind,

It is an instinct in our DNA,

Just like the instinct of sleep when feeling tired

Or eating when you feel hungry.

These are instinctive behaviors and humans are programmed to do them.

Our conscious thoughts – and what we believe –

Take a small space from what happens in our brain.

The instincts that control us,

Requires a much greater brainpower.

Where did the idea of sex come from?

Well, we all know what the real reason for sex is

It is an atomic production that will allow the survival of our species.

But humans were not the first to have sex,

In fact, sex has been on the planet for a long time.

Sometimes we have to go back to nature and go deep into the history of the earth

To understand some of the behaviors that define our identity.

As a land sign, photographer, writer,

I tend to go back in time

To find the important stories that nature offers.

My curious mind has led me to many adventures,

But this is outdoors in nature where I realized the greatness of my thoughts.

For me, the natural world is a source of great interest

But also a great achievement source.

My curiosity about the story of sex

It started when I was studying the rocks

In the Arctic island of Baffen in Canada.

For me, the rocks are really fascinating.

They have the history of the 4.6 billion-year-old Earth.

If you look at a mountain range or cliff,

You will find that each layer of rock carries a part of the time,

Like chapters in a book waiting to read.

The existence of a biologist to explore the earth

It is like walking inside a library from the history of the earth.

And study a smooth mountain-like book from the shelf,

Read every word and study how this mountain is formed

To understand the story of the earth.

So I’m sure that all of you are thinking,

What on Earth can rocks tell us about sex?

Let’s take a look here first.

If we look at 4.6 billion years of Earth history as 12 hours a day.

We will call it our Earth Hour,

It is really hard to understand geological time this way.

But if we look at it that way,

Started from midnight, when the earth was formed,

Going around the clock for the day, in the afternoon,

Then it will be a little easier to understand.

The earth was formed in the middle of the night,

Life first developed at 2 am,

3.7 million years ago.

Life began small as accurate forms of bacteria,

Then oxygen rose in the atmosphere around six o’clock,

Things started to become good for life.

So life decided to have sex, at nine o’clock.

This was 1.2 billion years ago.

For more visibility,

Dinosaurs did not appear until 11.45,

We, the first human being of any human race,

We have been here only two seconds.

That’s only two seconds in our Earth Hour.

I found that that was a way of looking at Earth’s history.

How do we know that sex evolved 1.2 billion years ago?

Well, we need to look at the fossil record

Moved in the rocks to discover who did it first.

They are the Arctic rocks of Canada

Which carries a guide looking for scientists.

The fossils hold inside those rocks

Carries the first evidence of sexual reproduction.

It was a very different creature from us.

But before I tell you what that creature was,

Let me tell you a little more

About the true story of birds and bees.

Sexual reproduction has long been a mystery for scientists.

Today on earth, 99% of the creatures are multi-cell.

Sexually diverse organisms that we can see are proliferating.

And even with all this fascinating diversity of sexual ways

Which we see in the animal kingdom,

Tracing living organisms is the basic way to produce a new breed:

Two members of the same type combine their DNA to form the new embryo.

But before sex develops,

Each reproduction was done not by sexual cell division.

An organism is actually divided into two halves to form two.

This is still happening today.

All bacteria, most plants and even some animals

They reproduce not sexually for some time at least.

Mating is not sexier

And less clutter than sexual reproduction.

You should not waste time or energy

To find and admire a partner,

Just grow and split into two.

Living organisms are clones for some others.

Do you want everyone to look like you?

Of course I do not want the world to look like this.

(Laughter)

It is the difference in nature that produces beauty in the world.

Sex helps keep this difference.

But sexual reproduction is not a much better evolutionary strategy than that.

Because it requires only one parent,

All parent genes are transmitted to their children.

So why should sex develop?

Well, for decades of work

A group of scholars on this question,

There are a number of theories for the right reason,

To protect against diseases,

To remove harmful traits that do not benefit the human race,

But the final guide comes from looking at living things

Which can reproduce sexually or sexually

Primitive monovalent organisms

Such as those found early on Earth

No sexual intercourse,

But if environmental conditions worsen,

They can turn into sexual species.

One such example is hydra.

Not the head of the snake Greek myth monster,

Hydra is really a small animal living in fresh water

Yet you can see where you got her name from.

When the food is abundant, the hydra will multiply sexually.

But if conditions change and become inappropriate,

Hydra will actually turn into sexual reproduction

Through the real growth of sexual organs in the wall of her body.

The primary world was a much tougher place than today,

In that harsh environment,

Non-sexual species may have been forced to become sexual for the first time.

So sex is a widespread developmental force,

But what creatures did that first?

Well, humans evolved from a common ancestor

Which we share with monkeys,

Which evolved from more primitive mammals,

They all had sex the same way we did.

The evolution of sex in the way we know

In fact it can return to fossil fish since 385 million years ago

(Called Microbiotic Dickie)

It was already found in my home (Scotland).

(Microbrushes) means small arms.

But this is just what scientists have recently realized

While those small arms are used.

Show accurate analysis of fossils

That these arms evolved during sexual reproduction.

It was not just a kind of sexual reproduction:

They were the first vertebrates to use IVF.

Using a member as man does

Paving the way for sexual reproduction in its known form.

So fish may be the first vertebrates to have sex,

But she is certainly not the first creature to have sex on earth,

To discover this we have to go to the rocks in the Arctic in Canada.

They were deposited 1.2 billion years ago on the tidal shore,

They carry fossils

Which show the first evidence of sexual reproduction.

A fossil called (Panjomorva popisense)

A multi-cell organism that reproduces sexually,

It is the oldest report to occur in the fossil record.

It was not mammals or fish,

It was actually a red moss, known to us today as a nautical grass.

So yes, the sea grass was the first to fuck.

The fossils show male and female reproductive cells.

We know today that the marine grass lacks sperm that swim actively,

So it depends on the currents of water to transport the reproductive cells,

This is likely what they were doing

Over the last 1.2 billion years,

Seaweed is very diverse,

Some of them have remained very similar during the history of the Earth.

They are remnants of the past to remind us where we come from.

Let’s go back to Earth Hour.

We have been here only two seconds,

The sex was here about three hours ago

The planet has existed for 12 hours.

This may seem a lot to believe him.

It is difficult to imagine that a marine herb was the instigator of the sexual revolution,

But that important evolutionary development 1.2 billion years ago

Paved the way for life on earth as we know it.

The important thing to remember here

That differences and changes in nature are what allowed sex to evolve,

And then allowed us and our intelligence to develop.

Nature is of great importance to our existence.

I was lucky to travel around the world and see some amazing things,

But sometimes, to put part of the puzzle in place,

It does not take magnificent mountain ranges or vibrant coral reefs,

It just takes a piece of nautical grass from the beach to the house.

Contemplating the nature and history of our planet.

Help us not only to understand ourselves and where we come from,

But also the possibility of existence of life on other planets.

Here on earth, the sex of a nematode grew,

You may be surprised by other stories

Which tells us the history of the earth.

Really, we can not consider nature without looking at ourselves.

Our destinies are intertwined.

So, let me leave you with deep words

For the poet (William Wordsworth):

Nature has never betrayed a heart I love.

Come to the light of things and let nature be your guide.

thank you.

(clap)
