I came here today to share a dream with you
and almost made the mistake of quoting a phrase
thinking it was Raulzito’s,
who packed my ten years of age,
but in fact is Cervantes, and says:
“When you dream alone it’s just a dream;
When we dream together is the beginning of reality”.
And I think this is one of the cool things in the collaborative universe,
that it is full of options.
And I want you to feel instigated.
and invited to eventually embark on that dream or not.
The dream has no novelty, it is in some ways the title of speech,
is the most innovative and sustainable place in Latin America.
And I’ll tell you a little bit how we got here
and how we imagine building and making it actually happen.
It all started there in 2012,
was a time of crisis in the transport sector.
I am a partner in a company that manufactures water treatment plants,
which recycles water in order to use it again
washing processes.
And then the market was in crisis,
nobody bought, nobody sold anything.
And the legend goes that necessity is the mother of creativity.
And as an alternative to survive the crisis
we decided to share this space
expecting to pay less rent, pay less light, pay less water.
And, in fact, we invited a company to come and join us.
Sixty days was what we needed to find out.
that it was not just about dividing accounts.
In 60 days we discovered that we had much more to share
and complementary in technical skills,
because one could use one of the knowledge of the other
to offer the services.
And even more than that, we could
one from the other’s network of relationships
to reach and offer opportunities beyond the network.
This is how we discovered that there was an opportunity
which went far beyond what we were initially thinking,
which was to divide costs.
And we wrote this project called “Parallel Live”,
one of the collaborative houses here in Porto Alegre,
where we began to connect more and more initiatives,
entrepreneurs, scientists, thinkers,
that had some type of product, service, technology or knowledge
towards sustainability.
In this our odyssey to identify and connect these entrepreneurs
has a “case” that I really like that is Thiago, who is a guri,
He is in his early 20s.
He arrived there one day in Parallel and said:
“Dude, I want to work here!”
“Yeah, but what’s your business?”
“I do not have.”
“What is your initiative?” “I do not have.”
“What is your idea?” “I do not have.”
“But you want to pay to stay here?”
“I want.”
Then it comes, because sustainability starts even with paying the bills, right?
And so Thiago sat there.
And, we, a little distressed with that guri who was sitting there, will do what?
And he to me represents the “case”.
He began to fish a little bit of the knowledge of each one:
of the girls who worked with architecture,
of the personnel who worked with water, of the personnel who worked with materials.
And he founded the first start-up that was born in there,
which had as its proposal to develop urban gardens
to solve part of the feeding problem,
all automated.
Great idea, they were mega-polished,
they set up everything they needed to set up.
And as fast as he had this idea, the idea did not thrive.
Three or four months later he had erred in some formalities.
He erred in the business model,
it was relatively expensive to sell what he wanted to sell.
But he’s the “case”, right? And he did not give up.
He persisted, continued there provoking himself, provoking others,
making new relationships, new connections,
and from there he created a second business, with other partners, much more mature;
he had to have learned something in his trajectory, right?
And he founded a new company
which today takes care of organic waste from the city of Porto Alegre.
He must have had this company three or four months ago.
And today they serve about 80 families.
And the cool thing is that they have a waiting queue
of more or less 700 to 800 people,
are opening operations on the coast and are growing a lot.
And do not stop there.
Thiago continued to make other partnerships
and other correlations with the parallel pairs
and even out of the Parallel,
and he has today countless projects that involve our entire community.
But one day I was looking at this.
and this wealth of relationships arising from it
that we instigated to look at the network.
And that’s what we decided to call the “live algorithm”,
what is this potentiality of the connections that happen
and which trigger new initiatives,
new ideas, new business.
We called it the live algorithm
because we understand that it’s almost like a non-programmable line.
We [do not know] how it works, can not replicate,
you know it mixes everything and things just happen;
All you need is good people, people who make the choice to want to participate.
And the curious thing about the live algorithm is that one day,
I do not know if we were aware of it or not,
but one day crossed the Parallel Professor Marc Weiss,
who is from an international NGO called “Global Urban Development”
which helps cities to develop in a more sustainable way,
economic and sustainable development.
And he got there and told us,
“I’ve never seen a collaborative space that works for this purpose
of innovation and sustainability, very legal and such … “
And then Marc began to live in our ecosystem
and I think maybe, a lot because of this live algorithm,
that nobody knows how it works,
he had the idea of creating,
and there is the dream that I came to share with you here today,
create the most innovative and sustainable place in Latin America.
For this we developed the project of the zone of innovation and sustainability,
which lies between the fourth district and the Floresta district,
and that specifically would aim,
be the most innovative and sustainable place in Rio Grande do Sul
to inspire other communities to follow the same path.
The idea is to work with urban mobility,
renewable energies, intelligent energy consumption,
but also the relationship with garbage or even the relationship with consumption.
And we understand that when the zone began to appear,
This has, in a way,
because they have increased our limits of relationships.
And through these potentialities of the relations that we made,
what has come to us today has come
the biggest chance to change the city’s photography.
And concrete has very little;
has the idea that there is, that I am here dividing,
maybe a little more real today.
And it has a protocol of intentions signed with the main person in charge
for helping to make this happen, which is Total Shopping,
for us to build on the corner of the most beautiful street in the world
the first theme park of innovation and sustainability.
Megalomaniac is not our problem, right?
All we think is to burst.
So the idea was to build a park that would turn a gift into the city.
Today is an area that is not being occupied,
we wanted the citizen to use that area
to do events, to have leisure, to do what they wanted to do.
But also use to host this type of initiative
and the relationships we are about to promote.
And the idea is that the mall works, in fact, along with the mall,
and eventually creating new forms of consumption
or consumer relationship, or even the mall’s waste management,
but also with the most beautiful street in the world.
Whether or not, by agreeing or not agreeing,
she is there, she is an active city,
scrapped, does not have a sign in town,
the tour bus passes straight down the street, not there,
does not have decent lighting, is a relatively dangerous street.
So we wanted in a way to appropriate, if empowering,
us, citizens, to do,
value this street as a tourist asset.
I live near the street, I see every weekend people beating photo there,
I do not even know where.
It’s not my neighbors who are going to hit the picture there.
But I think that if we can actually do it,
the most innovative and sustainable place
not only choose a zone, we encourage initiatives
and soon to set up a park.
For that we thought two social technologies.
I do not even know if it’s a social technology, that’s the way we’ve been called;
that’s how we engage.
The first one we call
of “PDIPro Lab for Intelligent Cities
and Sustainable Development. “
The Academy already speaks in PDI: “research, development and innovation”,
and we invented this new term:
“Research, development, innovation and prototyping”,
because it is not enough to think the idea, you have to put the ideas into practice.
And as a way to make that happen, we created a graphic scheme:
we want to find people willing to solve these social problems,
connect them to this algorithm –
we understand that there must be something that can facilitate –
and make these people turn those problems into ideas.
These ideas would be mentored by institutions such as SEBRAE, FINEP,
by all the professionals of this collaborative network
or even market professionals,
as well as the academy itself, with technical and scientific knowledge,
for these ideas to mature,
and have the opportunity to be accelerated.
And then we have two chances:
or we accelerate an idea that is a success
and we will be exporting solutions to smart cities,
to Novo Hamburgo, Caxias, Shanghai, Buenos Aires … it matters little;
or these ideas will go wrong and we will have the opportunity to recycle this
and put that face back into the incubator,
and turn it into a learning and recycle that idea.
This idea will not go away; nothing goes outside.
At worst, if the idea has to go away, because sometimes it happens,
this guy is going to have to become a mentor;
it has a trajectory and a learning curve
that he has to share with others.
We invented this with a goal:
Mining entrepreneurs who solve problems;
the city or the goals of sustainable development.
We want to mine entrepreneurs who solve problems;
to try to find what would be the first Brazilian social unicorn.
Does everyone know what a unicorn is?
Certainly not this graphic representation
which our wonderful designer has been able to invent for us.
Unicorn, in the language of business, are those companies
which have a market valuation of R $ 1 billion.
Of dollars, in fact, but we have already adapted here,
regardless of [currency].
So what we want to do is find the entrepreneurs;
those entrepreneurs with an idea with potential to be worth R $ 1 billion.
Lucky you do not find it!
Anything we find
in the process of prototyping,
which manages businesses of social value, interests us.
But since we are already here, speaking of unicorn,
we understood that we were missing a bit
to be, in fact, an innovative place.
And the same way we think
in mining entrepreneurs who solve problems,
we are thinking of mining researchers who investigate these problems.
We are part of the collaborative economy,
creative, circular, shared,
is an infinity of savings from these new relationships
that nobody knows how it works;
which has a fertile field to try to investigate
and dig all that you have knowledge there.
And enjoy that we are all objects of this type of research
and try to connect these researchers,
via live algorithm or anything else that can catalyze this type of relationship
to try, and that’s the hard part,
because I will say that until I get used to saying this sentence here is complicated,
because it is relatively pretentious; but it is possible.
And we have to be inspired by our neighbors.
You do not have to think about the United States, France;
you can think of Argentina, which has; you can think of Chile, which has;
you can think of Paraguay, which has;
think of countries that do research
who are actually there to investigate and propose new ideas.
And just as we want to bring and find a unicorn here,
to try to bring this example,
Why would not we try to find this researcher?
who investigates the problem and touches on the state of the art of knowledge
and that could eventually bring the first Brazilian Nobel Prize.
This is my invitation to dream this together.
You have a dream, you have delirium and you are hallucinating.
I say, “It matters little!”
I think if we start sharing it and sharing it
it’s halfway there.
Thank you very much.
(Applause)
