How To – Chop an Onion Without Using Crystals | Jamie Oliver

00:00:00okay onions chopping an onion is one of

00:00:03the most common veg you’re going to do

00:00:04so you might as well know how to do it

00:00:06properly so first things first is two

00:00:08ways slicing and chopping let’s do

00:00:10slicing first we’ve peeled the onion

00:00:11we’re going to half it once you have

00:00:15that you’ve got the core here right now

00:00:17if you want it to stay together keep the

00:00:20core on and I’ll show you exactly what

00:00:21that looks like I’m going to keep the

00:00:23fingers in we’re going to just do a

00:00:25tapping action slowly controlled use of

00:00:31thumb to secure it as soon as it gets

00:00:36wobbly flip it onto that side so it’s

00:00:38secure as soon as it gets probably do

00:00:42the same again now what you’ll notice is

00:00:45that basically by not taking that core

00:00:47off right the core will keep it all

00:00:50secured and all together so sometimes

00:00:53you want that you know if you’re doing a

00:00:55nice potato dish with onions and sage

00:00:57and you want to roast it off you might

00:00:58want that core on there so that’s one

00:01:00way of slicing just like that the other

00:01:02way is to remove that core here simply

00:01:06just cut it off that’s all you have to

00:01:08do and then when you slice it up then

00:01:18you can break these up and they’ll all

00:01:21fall apart and they’ll be loose and

00:01:22delicate and this is very much you know

00:01:26how I start a lot of soups sometimes

00:01:28stews and bits and pieces like that

00:01:30so that’s the second way now as I do

00:01:32this I’m starting to cry so I’m going to

00:01:34be really quick on how to do the

00:01:35chopping because you can’t stop crying

00:01:37unless you do it with goggles on and

00:01:38I’ve done that many times take the end

00:01:41of your onion off take just the end of

00:01:44your core off a little bit slice it in

00:01:47half right and again we’re going to use

00:01:49that core to our advantage so we’re

00:01:51going to put it core side away from me

00:01:53right that’s going to hold the onion

00:01:55together and then you want to basically

00:01:57not go all the way through the onion you

00:01:59want to just use the tip to about here

00:02:01so we’re going to just tap you can take

00:02:04your time absolutely how thin you put

00:02:06this cut together will determine how

00:02:09fine your onions will be

00:02:12and then you twist it and you can even

00:02:14do one or two little slices again nearly

00:02:17to the end here keeping your fingers

00:02:20well out the way for sure otherwise

00:02:21you’ll have an accident and then once

00:02:23you’ve got the two sizes that way and

00:02:25the many slices that way then slice down

00:02:28here once you get to this sort of point

00:02:33you can just anchor it into a side at

00:02:34the time and there you’ve got beautiful

00:02:46finely chopped onions if it’s not fine

00:02:49enough for you then you can go on to the

00:02:51rocking action and get it as fine as you

00:02:54need it so I’m just going to put that

00:02:58one to the side and rattle through this

00:03:01one nice and quickly again so as we said

00:03:06before course I’d away tap nearly to the

00:03:11end however fast or slow you want to do

00:03:14it doesn’t matter put it back together

00:03:17again twist it go nearly all the way

00:03:20through nearly all the way through and

00:03:25final slice there you go beautiful

00:03:29finely sliced onions you’ll be doing it

00:03:32time and time again to your minds well

00:03:34now I do it properly good luck
