Walt Disney Documentary – Disney’s Success Story

00:00:08hello and welcome to another edition of

00:00:11modeling the masters my name is Evan

00:00:13Carmichael and today we’re going to be

00:00:14talking about the famous entrepreneur

00:00:16Walt Disney and how you can model his

00:00:18strategies to achieve success with your

00:00:20business

00:00:48everyone knows Walt Disney for his

00:00:50movies theme parks and cast of

00:00:53characters what most people don’t know

00:00:55is when he first started out he had no

00:00:56money he had to live in his office

00:00:59because he couldn’t afford write for an

00:01:00apartment and he survived on a diet of

00:01:02cold beans because he couldn’t afford

00:01:04food by committing to his business and

00:01:06sticking with it he was now able to

00:01:08build a business that has almost 40

00:01:10billion dollars in revenue so today

00:01:12we’re going to look at three lessons

00:01:14that you can learn for wealth is in

00:01:15success and apply it into your company

00:01:17lesson number one is find something that

00:01:19you love Walt Disney grew up in the

00:01:21early 1900’s on a farm in Missouri and

00:01:24developed the passion for drawing so

00:01:26much so that one of his neighbors

00:01:27actually paid him to draw some cartoons

00:01:29of his horses when Walt Disney got to

00:01:32school he found that he was a good

00:01:33student but he really enjoyed doodling

00:01:35as opposed to paying attention to his

00:01:37teachers he connected with one of his

00:01:39high school papers and started drawing

00:01:41patriotic cartoons for the school paper

00:01:43when he was 16 though he found that

00:01:45school just wasn’t for him so he dropped

00:01:47out join the Red Cross learn to become

00:01:50an ambulance driver and actually was

00:01:52shipped to France to become an ambulance

00:01:53driver over there he couldn’t lose that

00:01:56passion for drawing and cartooning and

00:01:58he ended up plastering his ambulance

00:01:59full of different cartoon creations that

00:02:01he had made people knew him on the

00:02:03street because he was the ambulance

00:02:04driver with all the different cartoons

00:02:06blasted on his ambulance

00:02:07he decided that cartooning was for him

00:02:10he was going to be an artist and return

00:02:11to America to start his career as an

00:02:14artist so lesson number one really is

00:02:16make sure you have that strong passion

00:02:18for your business if you don’t really

00:02:21love it it’s going to be hard to succeed

00:02:22as a business owner if you look at any

00:02:24famous entrepreneur and why they serve

00:02:26the business it wasn’t for the money

00:02:28money comes when you’re really

00:02:30passionate about what you’re doing so

00:02:32think about what is it that you do in

00:02:33your spare time what do you really enjoy

00:02:35doing what gets you going in the morning

00:02:37what are your hobbies and how can you

00:02:39turn those into a potential business

00:02:41opportunity lesson number two is push

00:02:44the boundaries Walt Disney first made

00:02:46his mark in 1934 when he proposed making

00:02:49a feature-length animation which had

00:02:52never been done before it was called

00:02:53Snow White

00:02:55took three years to make he went a

00:02:57hundred percent over budget people

00:02:59thought he was crazy for doing it you

00:03:01ran out of money at the end and had to

00:03:02actually act out the last scenes of the

00:03:05movie for his bankers to get the money

00:03:06he needed to close and finish the movie

00:03:08it ended up being a huge success it was

00:03:11the biggest hit of the year he won an

00:03:13Academy Award for it and it was a

00:03:15financial gain for him Walt Disney’s

00:03:18next big project was Disneyland a 338

00:03:22year project out in California a theme

00:03:24park which had nothing to do with his

00:03:26movies people thought he was crazy again

00:03:28why would you do this what tie does it

00:03:31have to your movie business but he had a

00:03:32vision he was determined to make it

00:03:34happen and again it was a big success

00:03:36for him then he went on to open up the

00:03:39Walt Disney World in Florida and the

00:03:41company was able to open up different

00:03:43theme parks around the world so the

00:03:45message for entrepreneurs here is push

00:03:47the boundaries you need to do something

00:03:49different to get your company noticed as

00:03:51a small entrepreneur there’s so much

00:03:53competition it’s so difficult to get on

00:03:55people’s radar screens and make them pay

00:03:56attention to you so you have to do

00:03:58something that’s going to get your

00:03:59notice something that will help you

00:04:01stand out from the crowd so what is it

00:04:03that will be your equivalent of a Snow

00:04:05White something that’s never been done

00:04:06before it’s really going to get you

00:04:08notice and get the attention paid to

00:04:09your business lesson number three is

00:04:12stay top of mind Walt Disney did

00:04:15everything he could to make sure people

00:04:17kept remembering the Walt Disney name he

00:04:19did a lot of advertising as an example

00:04:21so we did TV campaigns direct mail

00:04:23campaigns print ads he even did grocery

00:04:26store coupon cutout so when you’re at

00:04:28the grocery store you’re thinking about

00:04:29Walt Disney he was also a pioneer in

00:04:33merchandising so whenever a new feature

00:04:35film came out that was a Walt Disney

00:04:36production you would also be able to buy

00:04:39all the merchandise that went along with

00:04:40it today while Disney is known not only

00:04:42for its movies but its TV stations theme

00:04:46parks dolls toys games and a whole host

00:04:48of other merchandise so the lesson for

00:04:50entrepreneurs is stay top of mind you

00:04:53need to do whatever you can to make sure

00:04:54your customers are always thinking about

00:04:57you the easiest way to grow a business

00:04:59is to sell more to your existing

00:05:01customers the hardest way to grow a

00:05:03business is to go and try to find new

00:05:06so do whatever you can to make sure your

00:05:08customers are always thinking about you

00:05:09you’re the first person that comes to

00:05:11mind when you’re thinking about your

00:05:12product or service and it’s the best way

00:05:14to be able to grow your business Walt

00:05:16Disney is an entrepreneurial legend

00:05:17who’s built up one of the most

00:05:19recognized companies in the world but

00:05:21remember when he first got started he

00:05:23had no money nobody believed in him he

00:05:26had to live out of his office because he

00:05:28couldn’t afford an apartment and he

00:05:29survived on a diet of cold beans because

00:05:32he couldn’t afford other food by

00:05:34following his lessons though you too can

00:05:36achieve entrepreneurial success so

00:05:39remember find something you love push

00:05:42the boundaries and stay top of mind I
