00:00:00hi I’m Evan Carmichael and welcome to
00:00:02another edition of modeling the Masters
00:00:04today we’re going to look at how a
00:00:06single mother on welfare followed her
00:00:08passion for writing and became the first
00:00:10billion-dollar author and highest
00:00:12earning novelist in history this is a
00:00:15story of JK Rowling and the top three
00:00:17lessons that you can learn from her
00:00:18success JK Rowling is a British author
00:00:22best known as a creator of the harry
00:00:24potter fantasy series rolling was a
00:00:27single mother living on welfare working
00:00:29as a secretary was not how she had
00:00:31envisioned her life she had admittedly
00:00:33reached her own personal rock bottom
00:00:35without even enough money to pay the
00:00:37electricity bill rolling knew she had to
00:00:40do something to provide a better life
00:00:41for her and her baby daughter but what
00:00:44she wondered the answer came to her
00:00:46while riding the train one day that was
00:00:49when Harry Potter came to life after
00:00:51completing the first Harry Potter book
00:00:54twelve publishers rejected it but number
00:00:5713 proved to be the lucky one within a
00:01:00few months Rowling’s Harry Potter
00:01:01character had come to life between the
00:01:03pages of a book in England a few months
00:01:05after that the American rights to the
00:01:06novel were bought for a hefty sum with
00:01:09that rolling finally quit her teaching
00:01:11job and decided to focus full-time on
00:01:13writing today the store is rolling first
00:01:16wrote in coffee shops have become famous
00:01:18the world over not only has books but as
00:01:21movies computer games music and more
00:01:23she’s the world’s first billion-dollar
00:01:26author and the highest earning novelist
00:01:28in history the Potter books have gained
00:01:30worldwide attention when multiple awards
00:01:33sold more than 400 million copies I’m in
00:01:36the basis for popular series of films in
00:01:392007 time magazine named rolling
00:01:42runner-up for its Person of the Year and
00:01:442010 forbes estimated her net worth to
00:01:47be 1 billion dollars
00:01:53by following her passion am I never
00:01:55giving up ruling gut off welfare and
00:01:58went on to become a billionaire to help
00:02:00you tap into your passion here are three
00:02:02action items that you can learn from JK
00:02:04Rowling action item number one get over
00:02:08your fear of failure nobody wants to
00:02:10fail but you can’t let the fear of
00:02:12failing prevent you from making
00:02:14important decisions in your life
00:02:15anything that’s worth doing will come
00:02:17with a healthy dose of fear successful
00:02:20entrepreneurs are the ones who can plow
00:02:22through that fear and come out
00:02:24victorious on the other side rolling
00:02:26couldn’t believe the number of different
00:02:28stories publishing houses gave her
00:02:30that’s why they didn’t want to print her
00:02:32manuscript her story was too long too
00:02:35fantastical I wouldn’t do well selling
00:02:37to a mainstream audience they said she
00:02:40remained patient and had faith in her
00:02:41product she continued to send it out the
00:02:43publishing houses until she found one
00:02:45who saw in her story which she did a
00:02:47success it was one year before the time
00:02:51rolling finished her first Harry Potter
00:02:53book to the time that a publisher
00:02:55finally agreed to buy it and publish it
00:02:57according to Rolling anything is
00:03:00possible if you’ve got enough nerve I
00:03:02was determined to try I was determined
00:03:05to try because frankly my life was such
00:03:08a mess at that point what what was the
00:03:11worst that could happen everyone turned
00:03:13me down big deal
00:03:18action item number two make every second
00:03:21count you only have so much time today
00:03:24to get work done and as entrepreneurs we
00:03:27usually have too many projects on the go
00:03:29to keep track of it’s hard work getting
00:03:31the business off the ground and you need
00:03:33to make every second count Harry Potter
00:03:35came to life on a day that Rowling was
00:03:37stuck on a train between manchester and
00:03:39london during the four-hour delay
00:03:41passenger sitting next to her might have
00:03:43used the time to catch up on some sleep
00:03:44but rolling was determined to use time
00:03:47to her advantage whether it was a
00:03:4915-minute break from her secretarial
00:03:51duties at Amnesty International or 30
00:03:53minute nap time break from her baby
00:03:55daughter Rowland used every spare second
00:03:58to dream up and jot down points for her
00:04:00story according to Rolling where the
00:04:03idea of Harry Potter actually came from
00:04:05I really couldn’t tell you I was
00:04:07traveling on a train between manchester
00:04:09and london and it just popped into my
00:04:10head i spent four hours thinking about
00:04:13what hogwarts would look like the most
00:04:15interesting train journey I’ve ever
00:04:16taken by the time I got off at Kings
00:04:18Cross many of the characters in the
00:04:20books had already been invented
00:04:25action item number three love what you
00:04:28do if you don’t love what you do you’re
00:04:30not going to have much success as an
00:04:32entrepreneur you’re going to quit as
00:04:34soon as it gets tough and you’re not
00:04:35going to make a meaningful contribution
00:04:36to your community as with all matters of
00:04:40the heart you’ll know it’s right when
00:04:41you find it rolling wanted to make your
00:04:44contribution to the world to add her
00:04:46unique something that nobody else could
00:04:48bring to the table and that unique
00:04:50something was her writing she never went
00:04:52searching for the kind of success that
00:04:54she’s received today she simply wanted
00:04:56to do best but she loved most and that
00:04:59was writing putting the rolling I just
00:05:02write what I wanted to write I write
00:05:04what amuses me it’s totally for myself
00:05:07I’m an extremely lucky person doing what
00:05:10I love best in the world I’m sure that
00:05:13I’ll always be a writer
00:05:18so remember get over your fear of
00:05:20failure make every second count and love
00:05:23what you do to finish up this video I
00:05:26wanted to share one of my favorite true
00:05:27stories of JK Rowling and some of her
00:05:29best quotes Harry Potter was not an
00:05:33instant success in fact at the very
00:05:36first book reading rolling did for her
00:05:38first Harry Potter novel only four
00:05:40people showed up to hear her the staff
00:05:42of the bookstore felt so sorry for her
00:05:44that they stood around and listen to
00:05:46Roland’s editor then advised her to get
00:05:49a day job since she had little chance of
00:05:51ever making money in children’s books
00:06:34thank you for joining me for another
00:06:36edition of modern masters if you enjoyed
00:06:39the video please give it a thumbs up and
00:06:40also love to hear your comments if you
