00:00:07this might be a situation you never
00:00:09thought could happen but here you are
00:00:11cast away on a deserted island with
00:00:13nothing but the clothes on your back in
00:00:15this project we’ll be making a survival
00:00:17fire by rubbing sticks together because
00:00:19if you can do that you’ll have a much
00:00:20better chance of being found alive
00:00:24[Music]
00:00:38looking around the island the first
00:00:40thing you notice are plenty of coconut
00:00:41trees and at the base or some old
00:00:43coconut husks those might come in handy
00:00:45there’s also plenty of wood lying around
00:00:47so you just need to find a dry piece of
00:00:49a softwood like this branch from a
00:00:51hibiscus tree hibiscus is a very
00:00:53lightweight wood and when it’s this dry
00:00:55it’s a great choice your old coconut
00:00:57husk will make a great tinder bundle
00:00:58because it’s stacked with a very fine
00:01:00fibers that should burn easily okay to
00:01:02prepare these sticks for a friction fire
00:01:04it’s important that both sticks come
00:01:05from the same branch a sharp Rock can be
00:01:08used to fashion some of the wood into a
00:01:09long narrow stick cutting the tip of the
00:01:11stick so that it’s slanted at a 45
00:01:13degree angle on both sides when it’s
00:01:15ready it should look something like this
00:01:16now use your sharp rock to carve a flat
00:01:19spot into the other piece of wood
00:01:20smoking it down until you’ve got a
00:01:22surface at least eight inches long then
00:01:24make a groove down the center to act as
00:01:25a track for guiding the other stick okay
00:01:28the last step is to wedge anything you
00:01:30can find under the base to help
00:01:31stabilize it then go sit down in the
00:01:33back it’s time for the action taking the
00:01:35shorter stick in one hand like this
00:01:37place your other hand over top sand to
00:01:39stick nestled securely at the base of
00:01:40your thumbs okay when you’ve got the tip
00:01:42set firmly in the groove track try
00:01:44pushing it back and forth keeping it at
00:01:46a 45 degree angle to the base not much
00:01:49pressure is needed yet so don’t worry
00:01:50about putting too much effort into it
00:01:52when the heat of the friction builds to
00:01:54where the wood is ready you’ll notice a
00:01:55change in how it feels and might even
00:01:57see a little smoke at this point push a
00:01:59little faster and use your strong hand
00:02:01to pull down adding pressure to the tip
00:02:03you should see a lot more smoke now and
00:02:05bits of charred wood dust starting to
00:02:06pile up at the top but you’re back into
00:02:09it and increase the pressure making sure
00:02:10the tip is stopping just short of the
00:02:12pile it looks like you’ve got a little
00:02:14Ember burning now but let’s continue
00:02:15just a little longer to be sure
00:02:17hopefully when you stop it’ll keep
00:02:18smoking okay perfect you’ve got a nice
00:02:22little coal now go turn it into a flame
00:02:24this is a good time to get your coconut
00:02:26husk ready by pulling apart the fibers
00:02:28the fluffier they are the better
00:02:30transferring the coal is a delicate
00:02:32process
00:02:32so try pressing the husk right up to the
00:02:34coal then turn the Ember base over and
00:02:36tap the bottom with a stick to make sure
00:02:38all the embers transfer out
00:02:40nice your coal has been captured so
00:02:42loosely cover it over with more fibers
00:02:44so that it’s protected from the wind and
00:02:45continues to smolder patience is a
00:02:48virtue here you don’t want to pitch it
00:02:49too tight or you’ll smother it out too
00:02:51loosely and the fibers won’t burn the
00:02:53heat needs to build slowly so try to
00:02:55balance the amount of air the coal is
00:02:57getting with the quantity of tinder it’s
00:02:58exposed to the amount of smoke being
00:03:00generated is a good indication of how
00:03:02well you’re doing and sometimes blowing
00:03:04gently can help speed the process when
00:03:06the smoke is thick and you start to feel
00:03:08the heat radiating it’s time to get a
00:03:09little more aggressive waive the bundle
00:03:11around to get some more airflow and blow
00:03:13right into the center of the coals just
00:03:15a little more air now and success
00:03:18there’s your flame the hardest part is
00:03:21over but don’t pat yourself on the back
00:03:22just yet because by the time you add
00:03:24some wood shavings your flame may be
00:03:26going out not to worry though because as
00:03:28long as the smoke is thick there’s still
00:03:30a good amount of heat and the same
00:03:31techniques can be used for blowing the
00:03:33coals back into a flame well there you
00:03:35have it now you can start a fire by
00:03:37rubbing sticks together now best of luck
00:03:39getting rescued if you like this project
00:03:41perhaps you’ll like some of my others
00:03:43check them out at the king of random
00:03:44calm
